This is a bit unique. Honestly, this is probably 90% of the Melee community in the whole world that is tuning in (pulling high number out of my ass) whereas you have a smaller percentage of Starcraft viewers tuning in due to market saturation.
Smash has always been shunned in the weird category. The RTS's and MOBA's get great sponsor coverage and large community backing. The fighting game community in general have wanted to keep sponsors out of their community (less nowadays), but Smash wasn't always welcomed to the fighting game community. So Smash was always in this limbo with their own identity especially when the community got divided when Brawl came out. Melee was always the much more competitive (much higher skill ceiling) game) of the two that died out only because it was the older game of the two. Now that Melee has made a huge comeback with EVO, tons of people are tuning in just to watch it. Nowadays, you rarely find any high profile Melee tournaments that are streamed at such a stage. But when they do, you can bet the Melee community will tune in.

I don't remember JoinDota ever releasing a number anyway according to valve TI2 had 567k http://blog.dota2.com/2012/09/the-2012-international/
I remember seeing the number myself in a player. It was the first Dota 2 tournament, the official unveiling of the game and had a massive prize pool.

I wish Sc2 had something as epic Evo or Dota's intentional. One big event that everything fed into once a year building up the hype.
It should be WCS. But it so isn't...

you're thinking of The International 1, not The Defense
TI1 was the first unveiling of the game as you said, funded by Valve and showed at Gamescom
The Defense was the first major online tournament by JoinDota, had a lot of hype because it had Na`Vi, etc etc

Well, not quite over yet.

Atleast 6-0 is prevented haha.

I grew up in the Smash scene ever since it broke out and played professionally until Brawl came out and temporarily killed the Melee community. So good to see it still retain its competitive popularity. Sounds like League of Legends :O Honestly, it's more comparable to a Shootmania (or something) player looking at the guys surrounding him, thinking his game is much bigger than it is, and claiming that they should be spoken of in the same breath as Quake without knowing the history of Quake. Even with the game being as old as it is, it's competitive history is tiny compared to the 'the traditional fighting game community'. It's your classic strong headed young guy trying to get respect from the old guard and flailing about when they don't want to freely give it. Smash Bros has the advantage of having the young youtube generation behind it though. Read into that however you will. You are just a hater.
And it appears you are one of those young youtube generation. My post was not an attack on the game. It was an attempt at a more realistic view of the situtation. The whole world isn't out to get you or your game.
