Maybe blizzcon but I have little faith in blizzard after last years finals No region locking will yield much better finals this year, for all of the complaining and drama regarding what it does or doesn't do for the local scenes it will definitely benefit the global finals by producing a much more competitive tournament. Count on it. I've got my ticket already, it's 4 months away and I cannot wait.
The quality of the games does not bring the viewers. I do not care for a Korean A vs. Korean B matches, without someone to cheer for (relatable and charismatic figure) I will not sit in front of the pc. There will be zero hype for the WCS finals with the current format.

The one that was essentially the unveiling of the game. uhh 2million concurrent is a little exaggerated, don't you think? I don't remember JoinDota ever releasing a number anyway according to valve TI2 had 567k http://blog.dota2.com/2012/09/the-2012-international/ I remember seeing the number myself in a player. It was the first Dota 2 tournament, the official unveiling of the game and had a massive prize pool. Are you talking about TI1? Iirc the opening rounds did have 1.5 million+ watching. The opening rounds definitely did not have 1.5 million concurrent watching. That was across all languages. English only had 300k iirc. Vaguely I found this old post: https://www.facebook.com/joinDOTA/posts/247700551931398 but it was a hot topic back then since people were comparing numbers to LoL (because they never not compare). None of that was confirmed. The only confirmed stat was 567k for the finals which was by far the most hyped match of the tournament. I also watched the entire tournament beginning to end, and I don't remember the live streams getting anywhere close to that 567k number before the grand finals.

Ok guys, time to get ~5 hours of sleep and come back for SFIV

The popular esport titles are just so slow. I don't get how we derived from Fighting games + Quake and stuff to games where 80% of the time nothing is happening.

It's a shame the smash scene never got any nintendo support. This event really showed the potential smash had to be great competitive game. IIRC, MLG picked up brawl a few years ago but had to stop due to match fixing + nintendo.

Nintendo got other more important stuff to care about.

You know, the viewers might buy the game because it looks fun even if they aren't looking to play in tournaments...

but the people watching it are the casuals.

On Live on 3, they were saying that money actually wasn't their concern. They didn't even ask for EVO to pay a licensing fee. It was more about protecting their IP according to djWHEAT.

Which is a real shame too because P4 was great this year. And the Japan-Bananamerica 5v5 was great too. Definitely going to be getting back into P4A after seeing that.
