It just seems to me that the fall of the 3D games has much more to do with how the ones playing the game presented it to the general public more so than the game it self, everything is presented in directions and numbers like Back2+3 and as someone who dosnt know what the hell that means, that makes it really hard to learn the game without playing it yourself. I can remember watching the first EVO SF4 event without ever having touched a fighting game and within the stream hitting the finals i was able to couchcoach the game, noticing when players made mistakes but regardless of how much i watched Tekken i still didnt understand what the hell was going on and why the person winning.. was winnning if that makes sense?
Oh and on that note.. Injustice again? sigh.. that game is so borring
Only Tekken has the Back+2+3 notation as far as I'm aware. Soulcalibur and Virtua Fighter both use anime notation of direction(number)+button(letter).
As for watching and following Tekken, it's certainly a lot more nuanced than Street Fighter because of the 3D movement and constant close quarters, but a lot of it has to do with how the commentators present it. Back when Filthierich was at Namco he did a great job of breaking down the mechanics as they happened for new players and was able to bring hype at the same time. Also, Tekken 6 had a lot more balance issues and wasn't as fun to watch as Tekken Tag 2.
Injustice and MK also use the same notation as Tekken. It's annoying for about a week, but you get used to it. People say the same thing about anime notation, but I hardly think any notation is the downfall of a genre. The downfall of 3D games is that they're slow and not very flashy.

See i dont agree' with your assesment of FilthyRich' even him and Markman could not get me to view Tekken as being anything else than Rock-Em-Sock-Em robots with two people screaming random numbers and directions, contrast that to how everything in Street Figher has a name and is visualy easy to recognize, that makes understanding the game and whats going on alot easier for a viewer that isnt playing the game (and i would assume that 80% of an EVO stream hasnt played any of the games outside maybe SF & Meele at a casual level).
The thing is, while i didnt understand anything about Tekken back then and wasnt interrested in watching the streams it wasnt until i played the game my self for 4-5 months to try and understand whats going on. Tekken has been the only game outside of LoL that i havnt been able to grasp without playing it my self and i assume thats true for alot of people and why the game just isnt very popular to be spectated. (i enjoy watching it at majors but if i had a choich, i would pick anything above a 3D game)
But look at Meele' i have no clue whats going on in that game but the time the meele comunity takes to make sure the viewer understands the history of the game more so than how to actualy play it, makes it compelling for me to watch it at the highest level (apex & evo). To me its just random Nintendo Characters running around hitting each other but being deeply invested in the people playing it, keeps me watching.
I dont think any of the koreans or americans playing Tekken is compelling people to watch their game. For me it ends up being very technical but also very robotic (kinda like chess) there is no emotion connecting me to game even now when i do understand whats going on and i dont think any of these points are the games fualt, it falls back on a community not willing to change with the times.
Lol so didn't get to compete in AE at WB8 since pools started at noon and I wasn't able to get to tournament till 2 (family priorities -_-), but went 2-2 in Kof13, with my first loss being to Romance.
Literally an honor and treat playing that guy. Quite proud of my performance too, and felt good getting the "Ooooo" and "Aww"s of the crowd when I randomly short hopped his short hop EX command grab (him Beni), and landed an EX qcb,f+PP into his (very satisfying to land) d/f+C Neomax combo (me Goro). Still lost free to his Yuri but still
Dude so nice to talk to. Got his trip paid for by some smoking/e-cig/hookah company that was selling samples/e-cigs there at venue lol.
Also say Gamerbee walking around responding to ppl by saying "Please call me Bruce :D".
No Soul Calibur and Tekken at this year's EVO is pretty sad. Those two have always been my most favorites fighting games since their first incarnations
As much as I try to, I can never bring myself to enjoy Street Fighter and MvC. Guess I'll just have to focus on Injustice and Blaz Blue.
Just a reminder that the Justin Wong vs Khaos MvC2 money match will be coming up in about an hour on http://www.twitch.tv/leveluplive. I know there are lots of MvC2 fans in this thread!
