But, like ShadowDrgn said, you either going to have to spend some money, grind a ton or deal with the fact that you won't get a competitive deck for a few months. This wouldn't normally bothers me but with games like Hearthstone (even if it may looks more "casual") and Hex coming out, I don't think I want to invest in this game when the new ones are surely going to be more popular and even maybe more fun.
I've also tried Shadow Era, since a friend of mine wanted to play a CCG with me and DoC wouldn't work on linux with wine. Also a nice game but seemed more "easy" to play than DoC since some mechanics aren't the same. Like in DoC, you have 2 vertical row of cards to put your units, 1 for melee/flyer units the other for range/flyer. You can only attack the other hero if a horizontal row don't have any units to defend, as opposed to Shadow Era where you can attack the hero when you want. You can also move cards in different row in DoC.
DoC also has a lot more cards than Shadow Era (like double the amount), which can be a good and a bad thing IMO. Bad because if someone like me (we can call me a noob) who wants to play a CCG casually, the amount of cards can be overwhelming and getting a competitive deck will take more time and/or cash. Bad, because well, if you want to play a CCG more seriously, a small amount of cards leads to less strategy options and can also lead to more boring/dull stuff.
But the thing I preferred about Shadow Era compared to DoC is that getting a competitive deck seems to be done more quickly and with real money it doesn't cost so much. With 20$ you can easily buy all the 10 starter decks with some other stuff. Each starter deck cost 100 crystals and for 2$ you get 220 iirc, you get some bonus crystals the more you buy.
So while I really preferred DoC overall, I will play Shadow Era instead while waiting for the releases of Hearthstone and Hex. Seems a better fit while waiting.
Thanks for your thoughts DPK.
I've tried a bunch of online CCGs as well, since I'm waiting on Hearthstone too
DoC seems like the most polished one so far. I'm sticking with it mainly for that reason.
One thing to note is that you get a box (10 packs) + packs just from the solo campaign. And then a bunch of goodies (xp/gold boosts) from beginner achievements. There's also a few promo codes for extra packs. Lastly, since you get 10k gold and 100 seals per level, you get another box rather quickly.
I mean it's definitely slow but if you start with a Inferno tempo deck, you can stick with basically little to no rares and still win plenty of games.

I found this game pretty enjoyable, but kinda burned off most of my enthusiasm once I spiked 500 ELO and started hitting nothing but inferno decks with actual good cards as a slightly tweaked graveyard deck. Match that broke my back was hitting a 6/6/6 with charge with protection from "dark" spells, against which there was absolutely nothing I could do.
If you're going to start, pick Inferno, or at least don't pick graveyard. I assumed it meant I would get some sort of direct damage/drain life minion control, but dark seal alone just doesn't really cut it. If I play this game more I'm going to pony up the ingame gold for the Inferno deck. Makes the tutorial and missions waaaaaay easier too.

Since last expansion, the graveyard deck is terrible, you basically have no good card except lamasu and icy weapon, and all your greens are terrible.

Yeah I agree with DoC being the most polished one so far. And after reading all your post, you made me rethink my decision haha. I didn't know you could get some stuff out of the solo campaign and some achievements. Guess I will take another look and make a new account and try the inferno deck since I picked necro last time.
Thanks!

Ya the campaign is invaluable. Opening a box feels awesome :D

The necro starting champion is the best, but all her awesome cards are in the Herald of the Void expansion, rares/epics, or both. Inferno is definitely a better starting faction because you can put together a pretty solid deck with commons and uncommons that will win (or lose) quickly.

I just played :D im like level 4 Haven. Im jealous of my opponents that have good heroes or imba ongoing area spells =.= i even dueled against a heaven player with a griffin randed unit that has 3 attack, 3 def and 6 hp! wtf.

I was wondering something. On what should I spend my gold and seals? There's so many decks and packs and I'm not really sure what would be the best price/value. Like keeping my seals for a box instead of buying some booster or even a deck? Should I try to get some new heroes of other factions too? I'm really undecided and some help/advises would be really welcome.

Is sunburst in the starter haven deck? It's one of the best cards I have ever seen. Just got owned by someone who killed everything I had with them, and then summoned some crazy haven cards. Haven looks sick.

Haven is pretty good in turtling yo. It has nice ongoing spells and defensive heroes. Pretty hard to kill if his retaliation is higher than your attack rating.

Looks like they used Neverwinter Nights 2 UI assets. ;o
That's really strange.

haven have really low atk and mediocre hp so as long as you have creature with high atk you usually can kill them before they retaliate. Haven creature have some ability to assist creature adjacent to them that why you never give them free reign over the two middle lane. Don't give them complete control in two lanes then you can out dmg till they drop.

i think you should spend gold on packs and seal for boxes .... because i don't think you can spend seal on pack . I don't suggest getting new heroes from other faction if you just started because you won't have enough card for a new deck anyway. Hell, i open 8 rein pack and only get 7 cards in haven factions :/ some of which i don't need.
As for seal I normally keep them till something better came out, and when something better came out you continue to save them until something even better came out :D and so i will probably never spend them.
try out the redeem codes before they ran out i believe you can get at least 6 packs with the current available codes. As for packs goes for either the reinforce pack (12500g) or the newest expansion. the void packs contain HIGH amount of sanctuary factions so if you are looking to boost your starting deck with void set you probably be opening 10 pack for 1 usable card.

there's a captcha but other than that totally painless. hf!

how big is this game and how fast is the development process? is there enough variety and possibilities in deckbulding? im into scrolls and i like it, but the incredibly stale metagame is demotivating at times
|
this game is much bigger in terms of cards than scrolls, there's been 2 expansions in the last couple months. but the community is pretty inactive (at least on the forums/reddit)
i played scrolls for a couple weeks (mono order, GO draw), and got bored pretty quickly. i heard tempo is making a comeback with the new cards, but i think in general scrolls just lacks "tension" in games as the pacing is way too slow
DoC would be the best if there was a draft tourney, it's very polished
Also for some reason it seems MUCH bigger in EU than US, i think they just didn't do any PR for it
|
There's a surprising amount of variety in the game, and another expansion planned for next month I believe. It's definitely more popular in Europe, but that could be because it's been out longer there and only available in NA since about 5 months ago.
I'd definitely spend all gold on reinforcement packs for the base set. It has the most useful staple cards and is the cheapest to buy too. Buy at least one box of the base set with seals first, then use your seals for the expansion boxes. Don't buy heroic packs for new heroes until you have 4 of all the commons and 2-3 of most uncommons or else you're not really going to be able to build a deck with the hero anyway. As for the premade decks you can buy, don't get any of the other starter decks. The Ariana deck has some staple necro cards and she's a good hero too. It's worth it if you want to play necro, at least.
There's a reasonably good guide on gamefaqs if you want to go read that too.

With a cheap Inferno rush deck I got to 1120 ELO, so I'd recommend starting with Inferno.

Thanks to everyone for your advises! Really appreciated.

Downloaded and have been playing all morning and have been having a lot of fun so far. Completing the campaign, tutorials and using every code I can I have managed to build a decent inferno deck. I was streaming this morning and getting advice from viewers which helped out a lot. I can pop back in and plug my stream next time it's on. Would appreciate any advice given for sure.

are there bots in this game? I've been matched with inferno players with heroes that can damage my hero by 1 (by discarding 1 card). they do nothing but this and eventually lose.
