If you have some experience with Magic: The Gathering, read this: + Show Spoiler +Main similarities with MTG: - Both players have life (20) and try to win by getting the opponent's life to 0
- Many types of cards such as creatures, spells, and fortunes. The latter two are similar to sorceries/enchantments
- Multiple factions each with its unique playstyle
- Playing cards are dependent on resources
Main differences with MTG: - No lands, you get 1 resource per turn similar to Hearthstone
- Hero has attributes that you can increase per turn, this is an additional requirement to playing cards
- Creatures are deployed on a grid, limitations on where you can attack
- No in-response abilities, I believe this is a feature to avoid disrupting flow in a players' turn
- Cannot mix factions, but there's a neutral faction available to all
For comparison with Hearthstone: + Show Spoiler +In general, I would say DoC is the second most polished online CCG next to Hearthstone but has much better mechanics. Better: - Creature deployment on grid makes for more strategic depth
- Many more cards and game-play variety, to win you can rush, One-Turn-Kill, mill, etc.
- Tournaments easily distinguish top players from the rest
Worse: - No arena, I don't think anything "limited" is on the horizon
- Since you can only constructed, it takes a while to grind the cards you want
- No effects/sounds for individual cards

FAQ: Is this game Free to Play? Yes, you have access to all cards by playing and don't have to pay
Is this game Pay to Win? Less than other CCGs, I believe the commonly agreed term is "Pay to Speed Up"
What should I buy initially? You want base set, seals - "The Box" (or "Serious Box" if you can hold out) gold - "Reinforcement Packs"
When should I play tourneys? Jackpot is free to enter, so try that out if you can. Swiss takes a ticket, don't enter these until you gain experience vs top tier decks from JP

This got me so excited then I read that it doesn't work for NA -_-
|
Downloading now, looks great. I love Magic The Gathering games and this looks like the free version of it. Thanks for the heads up.
|
Now that I have been playing it for a few hours I must admit: this game is awesome! Needs more publicity though.
Gameplay is pretty good, there is enough variation and constant updates make me feel like this will be fun for quiet some time. Also you can play it on iPad now!
|
So this game is actually out for NA now(on PC, its not out on IPAD yet), and since I wanted to play it a year a go, I'm going to give it a try. If any other NA people wanted to try it, you can finally.
|
This game is very good.I recommend it to card game fans and it is totally free. You can get competitive decks without using real money.
|
Recently was bored and played a bit of Homm III. Will give this a look.
My uplay ID is Jonoman92 if anyone wants to add.
|
as im on a tcg trip right now im interested in this game. acutally looks awesome but seems like the community is very small?
|
Hmm seems interesting enough for me to try it.
|
it's a fun game. the community is indeed very small. if you have no intentions like me to put money in the game...it can be long to get a competitive deck... easiest way would be to pick inferno deck as they're probably the best "rush" faction up to 1000 ELO.
Daily rewards kinda help now but still it takes a lot of grinding to get money and then luck is a huge factor to get the cards you want.
|
I seem to have no problem getting a ranked match within 15 seconds, usually within a few seconds I'm matched.
|
Penny Arcade plugged the game today so it might be getting a big boost in players over the weekend. I played it for a few hours (spent more time looking at cards than actually playing though) and found it pretty fun. PA also has a code you can use to get some free seals and booster packs.
I'm Otrere on uplay.
|
There is a fairly short tutorial/campaign that rewards you with enough currency to buy a box of booster packs. That plus the various codes you can find on the internet will get you a fair amount of cards to start with.
Here is a good code, it worked a little while back, I don't know if it still works.
A3D-WER-Q8E-DF2-E4J
|
That code doesn't seem to work anymore. WE-ARE-NO-TROLLS still does, though. It's a free booster.
|
anyone still playing this want to give some thoughts? specifically vs hearthstone/scrolls/solforge
|
I can't believe I missed this. As a might & magic fan this seems really interesting. Is this still being played?
|
I still play, and there are enough people to get a match in seconds at any time of day or night. I haven't played hearthstone/scrolls/solforge though so I can't really compare them beyond superficial details. There's a surprisingly large variety in MMDoC despite it only having 437 cards, and the game mechanics are solid. The downside is that you're either going to have to spend money, grind a ton, or deal with the fact that you aren't going to have anything resembling a competitive deck for a few months. They've been teasing some solution to this lately, and there's another expansion coming out next month so we'll see.
|
thanks for shedding some light into this.
i'll definitely try it out, if nothing else i can relive some of that homm3 joy from yonder years :D
|
Actually grew pretty found of this in the past few days, so i'm doing a streaming session of this

EDIT : Streaming a bit more now

Just tried this game a couple of days ago. Really cool game, liked nearly all the aspects of it. But, like ShadowDrgn said, you either going to have to spend some money, grind a ton or deal with the fact that you won't get a competitive deck for a few months. This wouldn't normally bothers me but with games like Hearthstone (even if it may looks more "casual") and Hex coming out, I don't think I want to invest in this game when the new ones are surely going to be more popular and even maybe more fun.
I've also tried Shadow Era, since a friend of mine wanted to play a CCG with me and DoC wouldn't work on linux with wine. Also a nice game but seemed more "easy" to play than DoC since some mechanics aren't the same. Like in DoC, you have 2 vertical row of cards to put your units, 1 for melee/flyer units the other for range/flyer. You can only attack the other hero if a horizontal row don't have any units to defend, as opposed to Shadow Era where you can attack the hero when you want. You can also move cards in different row in DoC.
DoC also has a lot more cards than Shadow Era (like double the amount), which can be a good and a bad thing IMO. Bad because if someone like me (we can call me a noob) who wants to play a CCG casually, the amount of cards can be overwhelming and getting a competitive deck will take more time and/or cash. Bad, because well, if you want to play a CCG more seriously, a small amount of cards leads to less strategy options and can also lead to more boring/dull stuff.
But the thing I preferred about Shadow Era compared to DoC is that getting a competitive deck seems to be done more quickly and with real money it doesn't cost so much. With 20$ you can easily buy all the 10 starter decks with some other stuff. Each starter deck cost 100 crystals and for 2$ you get 220 iirc, you get some bonus crystals the more you buy.
So while I really preferred DoC overall, I will play Shadow Era instead while waiting for the releases of Hearthstone and Hex. Seems a better fit while waiting.
