Differs per time period (military tech level) and how rich you are. Also per tech group, horde early game cavalry is ridiculously strong. This goes for western/eastern/ottoman:
Cavalry: Early game cavalry can be really strong, but costs more relative to their strength than infantry. For optimal use I'd recommend 2 cavalry units, maybe one extra as a reserve. But then again it differs per country, if you're rich and want the strongest army you could have, you could roll with 50% cavalry.
Later in the game, for example just before cannons are discovered, 2-3 cavalry is the best choice as they have fallen down a bit quality-wise by then. Continue using 2-3 for the rest of the game.
Artillery: Artillery becomes stronger as the game goes on. The first artillery is kind of weak, but it is the only unit in the game that can fire from the second line. So again it's more of a money question, except since they can fire without getting hit back it's more lucrative to fill your second line up with cannon. So at this point I'd recommend about a 12-2-6 ratio. 6,being cannon, could be higher depending on your combat width.
Cannons lose 50% effectiveness and can only be damaged when they're in the first line of your army.
So, a general rule of thumb for the perfect army composition, is to use 2-3 cavalry, enough infantry so your front lines won't have to be filled with cannon and the rest of your combat width shoud be filled up with cannon for maximum damage output.
All of this can be backed up by the math, but unfortunately I forgot all of that. The rule of thumb compared to your income/force limit should be sufficient for determining your army composition.

exceptions: poland, where you pretty much want to max your cavalry without being at risk of taking tactics penalty, since they have a gigantic 33% cavalry power bonus which is like half a military idea group by itself.

Playing as the Netherlands I've encountered something I didn't think I'd ever see. Korea somehow took over northern China. Also does anyone else have WAY too much money as Netherlands, I can't spend money faster than I'm earning it so I'm just gifting allies 10k ducats every so often and I still have over 100k

In one of the game I played, The Palatinate lead a personal union over Austria in the early game, like within the first 10 years of play (That was eventually dissolved though)

You can never have too much money. Build a bigger standing army and/or fleet with it. Whenever a war starts, anything you have already built is basically free manpower AND gives you the advantage of being able to crush weaker armies due to your superior numbers. And the way army/fleet cost scaling works, you can always spend your money on it, it just becomes less efficient the more you spend.

So I'm a CKII player looking to get into EUIV (largely to continue saved games). Played the tutorial (for all that helps) and have read a bit about the difference between the two games. Have also played a hundred years or so as Castille, uniting Iberia and expanding a bit into N. Africa, with the intention to turn west when I have the tech.
Unfortunately, I have almost no idea whatsoever how the tech system works. I invest points whenever I'm prompted; is there another way of doing this faster/more focused? Because at this point it's pretty automatic and linear; doesn't really seem like a game mechanic, so I assume I'm doing it wrong.
Other general questions: How to advisor? How does colonization work? I'm not sure I've even found an interface for this.

Basically, the point is judging if you want to use your points on tech, or on something else. Sometimes, if you have a good king, you can choose tech + other stuff. But usually you have to judge if you'd rather have an additional idea, a few more buildings, some specific peace, cores, or something along those lines.

Monarch points are used for many things in addition to tech levels, so it's not so simple as waiting until you have enough for the next tech, you have to prioritize somewhat. Also tech becomes cheaper if you are behind relative to your neighbours.
Advisor costs are exponential: +3 advisor costs about 20x as much as +1 advisor. The bonuses they give are the same whether +1 or +3. Early game just pick as many +1 advisors as you can afford (Castile can afford all three easily), and look for good bonuses.
Once you have a Colonist (Castile gets some for free from their national ideas, but most nations need to take Exploration or Expansion ideas to get one), you can send them to an uncolonized province within your range to begin building a colony.
In the Ledger there is a page that lists all Possible Colonies in your range, and you can sort by base tax and ease of settling there.

Also since You are Castille You belong to best tech group (western). So yeah teching might be pretty strightforward sometimes (unless You are expanding fast or get shitty monarchs). It starts to become complicated when You play some nation with inferior tech group.

What are some good country pairings to do a multiplayer game? My friend and I are looking for countries that are relatively even on strength and close enough that we can see the same things, but not so close that we're immediately butting heads at the start of the game.
e.g. Iroquois + Creek, Italy minor + German minor, Morocco + Venice, etc.

Will saves from the current patch be compatible with the new Art of War patch?

Very unlikely, given the massive reworks to the map itself. Re-drawn borders, new tags, split up provinces, new provinces, etc. Also the 30YW mechanic seems hard to shove in to a game already under way.

"the HRE will now be dismantled if no one is eligible to be emperor"
this can't be a coincidence right

"- Adal, Ajuraan, Ethiopia, Funj are now muslim technology group"
Wow, I can't wait to finally do an Ethiopa playthrough. They start in a decent position, it's just the shitty tech group that is now gone :D.

In my recent ironman playtrough as Austria i somehow annexed two countries in HRE i planned to liberate. Dont know how it happened but shit. I liberted them right after that but still ended up in two big coalition wars, lost 2 vassals, around 20 years of AE. France got bigger than it should.Shieeeeet. GoodBye perfect start (
