okay just started to play this game. i played brandenburg and conquered a bunch of HRE provinces. now every single little shit has like -120 aggressive expansion. what do not do this in the first place? more practically , pick your targets right, be especially careful about expanding inside the HRE , also , if your new to the game , a relativly minor country like Brandenburg isent a good way to learn the ropes

And i mean that as a preventive measure, once they hate you it's not so easy :D

Austria is a good ally and they stood loyal to me in the beginning until I got too big. They also happen to be in charge of the HRE so they usually wont ask you to give your conquered provinces back. If they do just obey them. Its important to stay friends with them atleast until you are bigger and and can get other allies. -You can expand east against the Teutonic Order easily since they arent part of the HRE. Poland is a good ally for this. -In general: Dont expand to fast, get 1-2 provinces, chill a little and then get some more. Try to keep your aggressive expansion modifier low. And of course never attack without a casus belli.

Even if you can beat your coalition, you cant make single deals so you dont get much out of the coalition wars. Usually getting one or more big ally/allies is really helpful. If shit hits the deck, France is what you want by your side. In 90%+ of the games where France is historically lucky (an option in the menu) France is able to bash all other superpowers at the same time once Burgundy is split up. So that's where I'd look if I were you. For expansion within the HRE it is highly recommended to get an alliance with the emperor. Mainly because he will spam "unlawful territory" on you if you arent. Otherwise just make whomever you conquer your vassal to avoid that. If you want bash Bohemia and the two orders early Poland is where you wanna look. Sweden/Mecklenburg (if Mecklenburg keeps the personal union over Sweden) might be interesting for expansion into Russia and helpful against Poland. Aside from that I agree to the others. Wait it out and bash people from different religions in the meantime. Abuse "create vassal"+"return core to" vassal (from the enemy) as much as possible to avoid aggressive expansion. You can forge coalition wars against allies with more preparation to the same end.

You end up angering far too many peaple if you take more than a few scattered provinces in the HRE, so you should instead use the diplomatic aspect to your advantage. Use vassals and abstain from taking land directly. Keep on good terms with the electors or appoint your own. Wage wars inside the HRE for prestige and to eliminate rivals via released nations/returned cores - Bohemia is the only HRE nation with many uncontested provinces, so you can always cut any large nation down with a harsh peace deal.

for that matter, Sunset Invasion, 3 Mountains etc, are luck achievements because you have to be lucky enough to get GOOD kings and not BAD ones. this is why you never read official game forums

This strategy worked out as well as it did for just one reason: as soon as the Ottomans attacked, Hungary took over the war and called in their ally Aragon. Aragon's navy combined with mine easily took on the Ottomans which locked about a third of their standing army and most reinforcements in Asia Minor. With Naples sending in reinforcements and the troops of me, Serbia, Bosnia and Hungary combined we crushed the Ottomans in Greece. The war went on for a little longer but when the Ottomans finally peaced out Hungary as the war leader gave me Epirus, Thessaly and Albania in the peace deal. Having cores on all of those provinces right from the start is really useful, I didn't expect to get anything good out of a defensive war but I almost doubled in size (Thesally being base tax 7 as well). During all of that my war with Venice was still ongoing. Venice also called in Austria which I didn't even realize at first since they didn't have much of a fleet and couldn't get their armies to me as nobody would give them military access. With my navy now free from their duties of keeping the Ottomans back I could quickly take Naxxos, Corfu and Crete and with a full blockade on Venice and Austria they gave me all of that and lots of ducats as well. Lateron I took Cyprus from the Mameluks and in 2 more wars a bunch more provinces from the Ottomans. I am allied with Hungary, Serbia and Aragon and I have Ragusa as my vassal. Oh and somehow I got Rhodes from the Knights Hospitaller as well. I don't even know how that happened, the Knights were neutral in my war against Venice. I guess they got a rebels demanding 'defect to Byzantium'? Overall I think I got really lucky with Hungary calling Aragon in the first war against the Ottomans because my naval forces alone were still to small to take on the Ottomans at that point. But with Aragon and Naples on my side everything went surprisingly well even when the Ottomans attacked me in the middle of my war against Venice. ![]() I didn't play an Eastern Nation before this, is it worth westernizing? I am about 4-5 technologies behind most of my western neighbours (only keeping up in military at the moment). And if I should westernize, when is the best time to do it? I was thinking about waiting till I have a big truce with the Ottomans so they can't attack me in the middle of it.

So, you could do it if you're in a truce with your coalition and maybe save yourself some monarch points in the future. For the troops' sake it's not worth it. Here's the math behind it: http://www.reddit.com/r/eu4/comments/2iqhjc/why_all_the_hate_for_westernization/ Don't do it. Just become buddies with Venice/Austria you'll border them soon enough.

later on with canons and firearms cavalry loses most of its power and you only really need them for the flanking modifier. at that point I go for 8 foot, 2 cavalry and 8 artillery

flanking just means you can kill smaller stacks slightly more efficiently, and the same effect can be achieved by over-cannoning (yes, cannons have the maneuver to flank, though obviously you want to have enough infantry so that enemies aren't actually in a position to attack 1st line cannon)
