has any1 tried the historical battles yet? i'm kinda stuck on the teutoburg forest battle. i THINK it's a bug. because varus died three times at the exact same time and place. and he's not allowed to. i'll try once more on an easier difficulty and keep a close eye on the guy.
edit: okay no clue whatsoever, worked fine on normal, but i swear varus tripped over something the first three times i tried. or i just got enormously unlucky. his batallion had lost a maximum of 5 men each time.
So i just finished a pretty long Skype chat with a friend of mine from and old mmo who coincidentally now works at SEGA. I'm not going to tell you who he is or what position he holds nor am I going to provide any verification of this claim in the form of progress reports, memos or any other kind of internal documentation as that is illegal.
What I will say to you is that he went into great detail on why Rome was released in the state it was in. The game was not ready and CA knew it was definately not even finished in the gameplay department. They had plans to implement all those missing features that caused the outcry: no family tree, guard mode, auto fire, unit formations. The game was completely rushed out in order to meet that deadline and I can tell you (again no proof of this but feel free to believe me or not) that there was a great deal of friction between the CA team and Sega.
It doesn't excuse the state of the game but at least I understand why the game is pretty much obviously half done. Also on the point of console port, he refused to comment so take that as you will.
True or not that wouldn't be surprising nor the first time. It would take a lot of blind hate to believe the developers actually thought it was finished. But when you are pressured by those financing the game who understand more short term gains and statistics than game design, this is what happens. Or who knows, maybe it was just costing too much due to unrealistic goals and Sega wanted to be done financing it. However I would be worried about long term loss when you stab a long time established franchise like that. Especially for a mainly solo PC game where people will have no fear downloading it if they fear to be ripped off again, or simply not buying. But maybe they just think its a non issue and with patches/mods people will forget when the next release comes.
What annoys the fuck out of me is that it looks a very easy thing to develop. Shogun 2 is a very fine game for most of it (miles away better than Rome 2 in polishing when released), especially with balance mods like Darthmod. Take the core of it (engine, agent system, agent trees, mods improvements, etc), new map, new units, change buildings/agents for something rome flavored, change naval battles and they would have been perfectly set since what people do not like about shogun is mostly the limited scope. I thought they were doing to do just that as I said a couple of months ago, seems they decided to rewrite a lot of stuff and it became a too colossal task to release in short time.
Of course SEGA was behind it, there is no way a team like CA would push out a piece of crap like this. It's sad to think about really, all their good work basically undone by a few old men in suits deciding they wanted more money, and they wanted it now. I can't even begin to imagine how ashamed the developers at CA must be for releasing it in its current state. It probably really hurts.
seems like theyre definitely are going into the direction of console release.
it all points to that,
arcade style fast battles with capture the flag instead of tactical set ups. more special actions and less focus on formations etc pov camera and already experimenting with fps style control of siege equipment (so units will no doubt follow) more streamlined and stripped campaign. less buildings in the tech tree system optimization, aka a good pc is no longer needed.

As long as they keep modability in the PC versions then everything will be fine. That's even if it is gearing up for a console release. If they released this kind of mess on a console (huge parts of the game unfinished or completely unexplained so no-one knows what to do unless they played TW before) there would be no coming back from it.

Sorry but as much as I am disapointed by this release I really don't buy that explanation some try to put forward. The game is poorly polished and many features are missing or bad. For both consoles and PC.
It isn't a Diablo 3 where everything was working smoothly but some stuff where designed with a console port, gamepad in mind, (like the 6 skills thing); it's a poorly optimized/polished game with lots of bugs, period.
This game screams "rushed" in every way. Its an insult to followers of the franchise.
I guess the devs never used force march to notice how your computer slows down to a crawl because the game needs to render a simple, solid overlay to show range or noticed the fact that in most towns the AI has no effing clue how to navigate and ends up rushing its cavalry and skirmishers into a solid line of troops.
- Sieges are a complete joke, when utilizing javelings only the front row can fire, the ai with or without siege equipment just stands there doing nothing or rushes the flag completely disregarding everything else.
- The balancing of the units is non existant, legionaries can basically masacre 4-5 units of levy infantry, and im not talking one loses morale and causes a chain reaction like in some other total war games, they just chop them to pieces.
- The battles are so fast there is no need for stamina, you either utilize the special ability (whip, frenzy etc) which drains stamina from 100% to 0 when the effect wears off or your troops are always fine.
- My current VH rome campaign is basically just annoying, every single faction in the game is declaring war to me even though I haven't discovered their territory or they are on the other side of the map, the ai won't attack anywhere near I have a legion, instead it just kills my garrison and leaves (WTF?)
Basically a game can have some flaws but this stuff is just popping up constantly, its not some rare occurrance, its what you would expect from a beta test, and that's exactly what they sold you.
Lol, just had a siege battle where the enemy soldiers just run back and forth in front of my busted walls/gate and not attacking. Anyone know how to turn off bloom? + Show Spoiler +

I feared this would be the case when they revealed it was going to be released Sept 3rd. Until then all I heard was shit like "we are in super pre-alpha" and that the game was practically just getting started and they planned on making it as epic as possible. Then they dropped that it was coming out like 5 months earlier than anyone suspected it would come out. Bad sign...
Wow this is probably the first time in history where I pirate a game and decide not to install it because of what people are saying... I liked Rome TW a lot, but this just sounds terrible.

Oh well, downloading Shogun 2 instead.
SHAMEFUR DISHPRAY
I don't know why but that always makes me laugh. I think that the game in its current state is pretty bad, but they've shown a commitment to improving it. It seems to me that it is entirely possible that CA wasn't ready to release and were forced by monetary concerns. It's not like Valve or Blizzard that produce tons of constant cash flow via Steam and WoW and can afford to say "Okay, this is totally not ready yet. We need to spend six more months fixing stuff." I think that there is a good chance that after all is said and done this game could be really fun.
Best thing about shogun - when my men break and flee like cowards I'm not even slightly annoyed. I just think "Shamefur dishpraay!" and it's all cool.
