Rome has the weird distinction of arguably being the worst in the series unmodded but the best one modded. It and MTW2 have the reputation of being the most easily modded games in the series. Rome had better support from modders because it was the first 3d game. Rome I vanilla was fine; I never modded it and still had a blast every campaign I went through. M2 had the best mods, in my opinion (barring Europa Barbaroum for Rome I). Will attempt to do a Let's Play of the Hyrule: Total War campaign.

They pushed advantages when they were given, they didn't force their general into battles when they were clearly ahead and used their general where he was most needed, they didn't send all their troops in at once and in fact kept their reserves organized and sent them in logically where they were needed, and most importantly the AI knew how to flank -- really intelligently for that matter.

I think the Roman A.I. had a better army from the start. Compared to the Macedonian troops, it looked to me like the Romans had him outnumbered and outclassed (in terms of unit quality) anyways. Interview with Jack Lusted of CA: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/71916-Lusty-Jack-s-Hardcore-Facts-Get-your-questions-in-now So there will not be an avatar mode in multiplayer. what is the multiplayer going to consist of? we know the thousands of maps thing and no avatar mode so please tell something new.

But if the AI at least attacks in formation and makes descent siege attack/defense that would be a good step forward... The main issue with AI in TW games is its non-sense... like suiciding a general or putting every unit in a big line across half he map... I don't mind if the AI isn't hard to beat, but I'd like it to at least make it believable.

Someone replicated the Skirmish in the original Rome, got very different results. I think the AI has clearly gotten better from what I saw in that album. I think a lot of the concerns above about suiciding generals and being unaware of its troop formations (big lines, sending everything in at once, etc.) has been sated in this recent video which I guess was the intent. Reserves are used smartly and the general isn't something that they just throw away. The AI seems more self aware.

Obviously the AI got better as time goes by, S2 AI is already better than Rome 1 in my experience. But it still sucks badly at times (line of pike across the map, waiting with full melee army in castles while getting butchered, nonsensical army compositions, etc). So I just hope that kind of stuff are fixed for their next game. What worries me is that they did exactly the same thing back then with S2. Claimed the AI was better and showed a demo. Sadly the end result was meh.

![]() In ROME II, every choice has a consequence, however great or small. Certain acts or events are accompanied with a description, and an artistic rendition of the scene. Here we've brought together four artworks from the game, depicting the same event for the Barbarian, Roman, Greek and Eastern cultures. Can you guess the nature of that event?

Are they going to have phalanxes like in Rome I, or will they be more like Triarii or Yari troops? And which one would be more historically accurate for the Greek city states of Macedon, Athens, Epirus, etc.? the macedonian phalanx will be revealed later. these were greek phalanxes, the original version of the phalanx. they fought upper hand spear (offensive), or sometimes lower hand spear (usually defensive).

Rome unmodded was still crazy fun, i played it back when modding was just not a thing i did, and have nothing but fond memories of it. I played both STW1 and MTW1. RTW1 came out when I was taking a Roman history class in college for some general education requirement. It was too much of a fantasy arcade game to me. I guess people enjoyed the least historically accurate game in the entire series. I didn't. I was going "WTF" the entire time on how things like chariots and cavalry and charges and all sorts of crap worked.

I was going "WTF" the entire time on how things like chariots and cavalry and charges and all sorts of crap worked. Rome I was definitely a more arcade-y Total War, but for its time, it did a fantastic job of putting the "epic" into the RTS genre while trying to retain some bit of historical authenticity. I'm gonna use Call of Duty as a comparison (hear me out, lol): it tries to be "accurate" on multiple fronts, but is ultimately enjoyed for its exemplary gameplay. There are tons of unrealistic aspects to either series, despite both franchises attempting to be as accurate as possible. But at the end of the day, they're just straight-up more fun gameplay-wise if the developers choose to fudge around a bit. Personally, I don't mind CA cutting a few corners if it makes the game more fun to play. Would you say Shogun I and/or Medieval I were fairly accurate from the historical and realistic perspectives?

Realism is nice but it should never get in the way of the mechanics of a game.

I really hope that CA don't fuck up this time. I feel like with that strong of a franchise, this game will be the turning point for the developers. Death or glory. Let's hope it rocks in as many aspects as possible,.
