With the features they have announced so far, and the graphics and scale of the thing, it would have to be a monumental fuck up for them to fail.

Like Empire?
I don't understand where the "fantasy" aspect is coming from. Yes, it might be true in the sense that it's "not wholly realistic," but when I think of fantasy I don't consider any of the Total Wars to be anywhere near that.

To some people, anything that is not 100% historically accurate to the smallest degree is fantasy. Even stuff like EU3 gets called "Fantasy", because some small things are not exactly like they should be, or because the game history does not develop the same way real history did. (There wouldn't be much of a game if you couldn't change history). I will never understand how any of this would be a problem.
The city i was born in, is called Alexandria ) Nothing to do with Alexander the Great, he didn't went that far, anyway ,sieges of this huge cities is hopefully gonna feel epic. Egypt here i go! I hope Osiris will welcome those who opose us not very harshly in afterlife hehe

Actually , plenty of them ) But not founded by Alexander. He founded few of them leading East, its just happens that Alexandria of Egypt became the most legendary of them all
Also if you wanna get "pumped" for the release, without reading much stuff, you could watch ROME: Rise and fall of an empire , its available on youtube, also there are more videos on Punic wars, etc. Maybe someone knows something "better" , just post it here!

i think he means the flaming pigs, the headhurlers, screeching bowravaging maidens, roman ninjas etc.

I have watched these, they are pretty good but my God is that guy's voice annoying. I watched about 10 then i couldn't stand it any more and had to stop lol.
edit: Some notes on the 'manipular tactics' video: What he should have done, which i think is limited by the amount of units available for command in RTW is double up each unit, wit the second behind the first. The formation starts off exactly correct, but just before the fighting when the velites have retreated through the gaps in the roman battle line, the hastati would form one long solid line and advance on the enemy. When the time came to deploy the principes, they would then reform into the manipular formation, to allow the principes to fill in the gaps, once again forming a solid line, and allowing the frontline hastati to rest. If this failed, both the principes and the hastati would retreat through the gaps in the triarii line, and the triarii would then form a solid line of their own, allowing the principes and hastati to rest. The fatigue system in RTW allows this kind of combat to work extremely well at wearing down the enemy.
Wouldn't be hard to do better than Shogun 2 in the naval area... those were AWFUL.
We'll see, this video just show chosen little clips, what really matters fr me is if naval become fast enough and manageable enough to be fun. My main issue with S2 was that it was real slow and mainly about shooting arrows in circle while being unable to board ships because it required some kind of perfect alignement to happen. That... or just have a Nanban cannon ship and wreck everything with it.
So if now we get more brutal and head to head naval battles I'm all happy because I always felt sad to have to auto resolve a whole part of a game.
I have a question for Total War fans here. I've been an RTS player for years and never really delved into RTT games, but I'm really interested in a strategy game with Rome as the main theme. Is there any way to find out whether I'm going to like the game's gameplay before buying it? Maybe Shogun II demo? Is there one?
Also, is there a multiplayer component in the game and how does it work?

Shogun II demo is okay (there IS one on Steam), but I'd recommend picking up Rome I off Steam or at a bargain bin in a store. There are advantages to both; Shogun II has a much more complicated campaign map and intricate battle system, but Rome I oughta hook everyone that plays it, hahaha! Rome I was arguably the simplest of the 3-D TW games and offered a very easy-to-enjoy, difficult-to-master method of combat.
Multiplayer changed for Shogun II, and most of us are hoping it reverts back to its original form, lol. There's this Avatar Conquest mode where you unlock new units and retainers (think of them as personal buffs) as well as skills for your general's bodyguard as you played more battles. However, I hope that they go back to the mode they had before where you just have a set number of funds and create an army out of that, buffing certain units with experience where applicable.
Play shogun 2 demo, should be enough to give you a feel of how these game work. Then just imagine it transposed into ancient Rome.
Bigger map, more diversity, some new features should be the main differences. Then we all hope for better AI, better Naval Battles and a few other stuff that were meh in S2.
But S2 should give a good enough impression of how the campaign map works with agents and settlements and armies, and how land battles work (naval suck in shogun 2). Rome 2 will be a lot closer to S2 engine than Rome 1.
I for one however don't really recommend playing the first one. I guess it's just my opinion but even though I liked it a lot I think it has badly aged and wouldn't recommend it for a new comer because I don't think its an accurate preview of Rome 2 when it comes to the gameplay. But that's my opinion with which many will disagree probably xD
