Bigger map, more diversity, some new features should be the main differences. Then we all hope for better AI, better Naval Battles and a few other stuff that were meh in S2.
But S2 should give a good enough impression of how the campaign map works with agents and settlements and armies, and how land battles work (naval suck in shogun 2). Rome 2 will be a lot closer to S2 engine than Rome 1.
I for one however don't really recommend playing the first one. I guess it's just my opinion but even though I liked it a lot I think it has badly aged and wouldn't recommend it for a new comer because I don't think its an accurate preview of Rome 2 when it comes to the gameplay. But that's my opinion with which many will disagree probably xD
Funny, but Rome 1 is the only game i want to play in anticipation of Rome 2. Maybe its cos i didn't play it much back in the day, but i think its still an awesome game in its scope and (i hate this word) epicness. Shogun 2 is just too limited for me. Yeah the engine is better, and the AI is much better (still pretty bad) but with mods Rome 2 is just awesome. I guess it depends on how much you enjoy Roman history.

I'm anticipating Rome II for the time period too, lolol. The Classical era is incredibly rich culturally.
@rezo: Shogun 2 has a very similar user interface to the one Rome II will have, I'd imagine, but the battle system will still resemble Rome I if you ask me. Phalanxes are essentially untouched (perhaps improved), legionaries function largely the same way as before, and cav doesn't look like it's been changed too dramatically. For the campaign map, the agents in Shogun 2 (ninja, metsuke, and monk) functioned very different from the diplomat, spy, and assassin of Rome I; still unsure what the "veteran" will do, but I've little doubt they will play a different role than those in Shogun 2.
Overall, I think there's merit in playing Rome I, if only for nostalgic value. Ideally, you should pick up both on a Steam sale and try each of them before settling into Rome II, "maybenexttime."

I don't think I ever had a chance to like Shogun simply because of the time period. I was always so completely uninterested and unattached to the time period and world. Rome on the other hand! Long have I dreamed of marching a meat machine of men to grind up unwashed barbarians to the North!

my problem with Rome was lack of army composition choices...
Horses were worthless in Shogun because the main staple of every army was Yari units..which were the cheapest in the game and hardcountered horses...
i got sick of armys with nothing but samurai + archers eventually.
Cant wait for Rome II!!!!!

Oh I'll agree on some of what you said. But what I meant was just really about "feeling" the game, having a taste at it. If someone just want to test how that kind of game works the S2 demo is enough in my opinion (cant exactly remember what was in it though). I was also considering the fact that S2 demo is free while Rome 1 gold isn't unless you get a pirated version or something. Graphics, camera controls, how settlements works, agents, leveling system (no trees though), etc are all of things that are closer to Shogun 2 than Rome 1. For the agents I expect them to play like Shogun. Not having the same roles of course but the whole leveling and multiples roles part of it (offensive action, park in settlement passive, linked to army passive). Always felt they were more interesting in Shogun2 than in Rome1 and Medieval2.
But in the end maybe it all has to do with me really not being able to play Rome 1 (even though I liked it back then) and preferring a game of Shogun 2 if given the choice :p I eagerly await R2, should bring the satisfaction I had playing with S2 engine but in ancient Europe setting.
PS: Playing with mods in both games is almost a given anyway.

Okay guys, I'd like a head count of everyone here who's planning on playing Rome II when it releases. PM me if you're interested in creating a group for TL Total War players on Steam and if there are enough folks who confirm, I'll make it happen. Mic support would be a big plus. Try coordinating tactics in Steam without voice chat if you don't believe me; it's horrendous, lol.
(Here's my Steam account profile as an aside. Feel free to friend me: http://steamcommunity.com/id/AnaxofRhodes/ )

So excited I would like to think i would be both noble and patriotic and blast the Iceni to world domination but realistically its going to be Rome, of course.
|
Hesitating between Rome and Carthage, probably Rome first and if the game is very good without mods I'll replay with Carthage then Egypt then one barbaric. If the game has a severe need of balancing and AI tweaks I'll wait a couple of weeks for modders to rectify some of it, before a second playthrough.
|
See, I'm personally stuck between Macedon, Epirus, and Athens. Wanting to choose a Greek faction with a balance between culture and military awesomeness. :-\ Mostly I'm stuck between Macedon vs. Epirus/Athens; do I try the DLC factions on day one, or do I stick with a more general Greek mainstay?
Honestly, though, I bought the pre-order 'cause it was 15 bucks off, not for the Greek pack, lol. Sooooo, I'll go with Macedon. Second go around will probably be Rome, then third will be Sparta or Athens.

can't wait to play the first campaign. You just can't compare the first campaign of a new Total War game to any other gaming experience. It's when the game seems so huge, so massive, so flavoured with things to do and the knowledge that the designers have once again created a game with major design flaws are not yet present in your mind, because you're having a blast and you're not going to read the cry threads on the forums, as you're just playing as much as you can.

Arverni first . Celts should have a nice balance between footies and cav I'd have chosen Iceni (GB is a great starting location in any game), but they seem to prefer chariots to cav, so gotta go with the celts
|
Oh man this game looks fucking awesome. I cannot WAIT! Total war games are the only games I really get hyped up about. Hell I was excited for the next total war game even before Rome 2 was announced after seeing some of the cooler things they put in shogun 2. Campaign map looks from the previews like it's going to be my favourite non modded map of all the series. Seriously pumped.
Also I'm defiantly going to pick Carthage. Favourite faction in Rome 1 and now that naval is more important and can actually play a damn naval battle instead of auto resolves mmm.
|
Yeah, I don't like getting too far ahead of myself, but i'm confident this is going to be the best one yet. I thought Shogun 2 was great, but felt more like the foundation for a better game than a fully fleshed out one. The mono culture/lack of variety of units and the predictable AI made replaying a campaign sort of boring after your 25th battle that was exactly the same.
With true line of sight and smarter AI, more fields of battle, bigger variety of units and Naval/Land combined battles, it means every battle is going to have surprises and tactical issues you have to deal with you never had to before. As Dark said, Total war is one of the few games i've gotten excited about, since I picked up Medieval Total war almost 10 years ago! Also, I refuse to play anything but Sparta. Atleast for the first few hundred hours.

Try playing Scotland in Medieval II. Add a challenge where you don't attack England. Ever.

Very much looking forward to this game, been playing a lot of RTW1 and Barbarian Invasion just waiting for this to come out. Trying to keep up with all the videos about it too.
Not sure which faction I will start with, The Aegean Sea is always primo for trade, so I might be tempted to start with a faction around that area . Or I might just go with the Romans and conquer that area.
Eventually I will try all the factions, probably not finish many. But definitely try them.

It's going to HAVE to be Iceni!!! Dat dere Boudicca!!
I absolutely loved learning about Iceni back when I was 8, gotta have some British pride! Plus it's always fun to run roughshod over the welsh, irish and french as a starting area :D
On August 18 2013 13:14 MaestroSC wrote: my problem with Rome was lack of army composition choices...
Not sure if srs?
Oh you are referring to the faction not the game?
Yeah Rome as a faction was quite monotonous in the battles. But that's just how they were IRL. It's all about the efficient machine of death.
PS whoever thinks Rome 1 has badly aged is MENTAL. If anything it has aged extremely well, and harkens back to the golden age of gaming but also has pretty sick graphics and gives a great impression. It is easily in my top 10 games of all time and maybe my top 5.
|
Rome was always my favourite faction in Rome 1 so I'll definetly start out with them. Second game I am not sure yet, if they were available I'd pick thr seleucids they had soo many options in Rome 1 and were pretty challenging because they were so spread out.
|
bah now I really can't wait to get cracking myself.
No idea who I'm going to start with, probably one of the Greek states or Rome. Then again, the Iceni or Egypt may be nice as well.
