I thought the melee engagements resolved rather quickly too. Shogun 2 was supposed to have the decisively speedy engagements, and Rome II the long and drawn-out grinding between infantry lines. The Parthian player not engaging wisely is the explanation I'd give.

Yeah it was a really poor showing. She handled her units poorly, lots of archers were ridden down by cavalry, it's likely they were breaking a lot earlier than normal due to morale

For sure i'd join in, I plan on playing this a lot. I'm not much into multiplayer, but discussion about the campaign and all that would be cool.

You can be converted.

It can actually be a lot of fun. The important thing is to have a lot of active friends play with you, as it makes it a lot easier to continue playing and improving and goofing off (lol); going it alone turns players' interests away too easily.

I'm totally cool with that. It's just CA stated they'd make the combat in Rome II more "grinding" and "barbaric" compared to the "graceful, swift" combat of Shogun 2. I do prefer the look of the units from Rome I, especially for the Romans, than the designs here, even if they are more historically representative.

Combat was much more like what I expected. Legionaries so beastly. :-o

The unit faces are distracting. I hope there's an option like in SC2 where you can halt or remove them.

Unit special abilities are below unit cards instead of above them as they were in Shogun 2.

It's annoying but that wouldn't really make sense considering how long it took to make one. But I wonder why in that case they just put the ballistae on the ship and shoot from there.
Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

I'm just wondering whether spearmen still retain their bonus damage vs dismounted cavalry... since you can't disembark horses either, just like siege equipment.
Anyway it looks pretty good, I like the strategic camera. But the only wish I had since I've been playing TW games is for melee units to really clash and mingle their lines during battle. Because it has always been wall vs wall with 3-4 units actually hitting each other...

Shogun 2 has that with mods. Probably someone will make a mod for that in R2 if possible. But the second drawing is pretty realistic when it comes to romans I think, after all they were renowned for discipline creating a wall that stay tight and kill people with their short swords. The first one would be more for other types of units.

I don't think they still have a bonus. Dismounted Cav become sub par spear/swordsmen or whatever they are carrying. The same as a regular unit but usually with reduced stats iirc

Yeah, i personally think retaining formation should be reserved ONLY for disciplined high-end army units. Like Roman Praetorian Cohorts or the equivalent Elite Unit of a faction. Some like barbs (Arveni, Iceni, Suebi) probably shouldn't even have access to this kind of formation.
