I'm an old FFXI player trying FFXIV for the first time, I have a couple of easy-to-answer questions, if anyone could help.
- I noticed elemental crystals for crafting are still in the game, and I got them as quest rewards. Anything similar to the "badge buffs" you get from guards to make them drop from mobs? Or now they are mostly quest rewards and that's it?
- What level do I unlock sub-jobs? What about the crafting jobs?
- What level should I consider healing Tam Tara (sp?) the first dungeon?
- Anything I should particulary keep in mind in early low lvl? Any can't-miss questline or just something that a new player should be aware of?
- Last one: Anyone in the Phoenix (EU) server? Any linkshells going? As a TL member should I have rolled elsewhere? How do I get to know my server's community? Official forums are kind of a wasteland.

Does anyone have any idea how the send/receive things work? I am getting pretty big fluctuations but the game seems to settle on a stable 1-2sec delay.
Some people are saying the higher the better and some say lower. It's confusing.

Hey guys. Just wanted to ask a question about pvp since the anwsers I found on the internet were a bit misleading. Will there be a WoW style arena in FFXIV, 2v2/3v3 deathmatch type and such?

1. No idea. sorry
2. you need your first class to level 10 before you can pick up another class. to unlock the jobs you need to have the right combo of two classes at the right level. with crafting i think all you need to do is put on the crafting gear.
3. not sure i assume somewhere around 17-18
4. have fun

1. I believe I have been picking up crystals off mobs. I have a lot more in my inventory now than what I have gotten from quest rewards. 3. I also heard lvl 17 is the minimum for the first dungeon 4. Finish your Hunting Log! Its excellent XP and you have to do them to unlock the next one.

I feel bad for the people who get 1017 errors and server d/cs. I met a few people in-game and became friendly with them, but an hour or two doing hunting logs, my friends D/C'd and couldn't play until late at night. I was just smart enough to keep my computer active and never log off.
These are launch issues that we've always dealt with though, don't forget that as you guys go nuts. FFXIV is a pretty good game guys. If it caters to your taste then you will stick with it, if not then you won't, just like every other game.

Been playing Phase 3 and Phase 4, so I can help.
1. You can get them off of gathering classes as well as questing, and I think levequests (the equivalent of daily quests) give them frequently too. Like botany for instance, you click on the thing you want to get out of the tree you are hacking away at, and you have like a 95% chance of being successful at getting certain crystals. Certain areas have different propensities to certain crystals as well, so you won't just be motivated to gather only in the Black Shroud for instance, you will have an incentive to diversify where you gather.
2. At level 30 you can do a class quest that requires a level 15 of another class to accept. It's not really sub-jobs in FFXIV, basically classes are Archer/marauder/pugilist/etc... Jobs are like Bard (Archer at 30 pugilist at 15 to do the quest, and can use the abilities from pugilist and lancer, as well as basically being an archer first).
3. The first few dungeons are easy, when you get the quest to go to them, do them as early as possible for more gains from the exp for doing them the first time.
4. One popular one people ask about that is fun is the dye quest. http://eorzeareborn.com/color-your-world-the-dye-quest-in-ffxivarr/
5. http://www.reddit.com/r/FFXIVrecruitment - That's a really good place to find a free company (FFXIV's name for linkshells). Linkshells in FFXIV are basically invite only chat groups, Free company's are the equivalent to "guilds" with perks and guild banks etc...

This is pretty much what we know so far.

You don't even have to keep it active, there is no idle check, my girlfriend stayed logged in for 8 hours without touching the game.

Basically the game is balanced around at the end game 4-5 abilities as your core abilities to cycle properly, and there are multiple other abilities for situationals and reactionary (like if you dodge or a monster dodges for instance).
Conjurer was boring as heck until I did a few other quests, archer was always pretty fun because you can kite higher level mobs and try to challenge yourself with chain exp linking.

I bought the game when it was first released way back. Can I play the early access? Can I play at all?

If you bought FFXIV 1.0, then yes you don't have to buy ARR to play ARR. You will still have to pay subscription after like 14 days or something though.
Early access was for people that bought ARR or were Legacy players (1.0 players that paid for 90 days of subscription).
It's released tomorrow at 3AM MST (I'm from colorado sorry for the weird time zone), so you should be able to play then. Here's the download link.
http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/inst/ffxivsetup.exe
I would download it now and start patching.

No problem, SQ-EX really outdid themselves on this much needed apology of a game, and I just want more people to play it and have fun playing it.

Yeah I'm playing Conj, it's beyond boring.

It seems that my server is somewhat... dead. It's weird. Phoenix-EU, that is. Barely any posts on official forums, and literally zero posts on reddit FFXIV recruitment.
Since I'm only lvl 10 and today is gonna be the first day where I really can sit for 4+ hours to play, I think I'll reroll.
What server are you guys playing and is there an official TL guld somewhere?

IMO most caster classes are very boring to me. I never enjoyed any of the caster classes in WoW, FFXI, RO, PSO, etc... You get the drift, I don't like sitting there and just casting the same thing over and over. Some people find it relaxing to play a caster so they enjoy it quite a bit.

Found another place that seems to have quite a few recruitment topics going.
Not saying go elsewhere, just if no one replies, here's another resource.

I feel like both melee and casters is just about the same. Especially in PvP, in PvE their are very specific instances where melee have to move around more than Ranged (melee chasing a Boss zig zagging around while ranged chill). Usually with the right mechanics, everyone has to haul ass at some point.
In PvP there's always going to be that kite n chase dynamic. So in terms of movement, it really is basically the same unless you suck or your opponent sucks.
But I do see where you're coming from though. In terms of leveling it's more boring to lvl a ranged class when your first start out. However, this changes as mobs become more aggressive and powerful, forcing you to kite and CC in order to survive. Like on my cute as fuck Lalafell THM I would be happily throwing fireballs at a giant ant, next thing I know I agro'd 2 more, shiet. That's when I have to use Blizzard II, activate sprint and toss out some Sleeps and burn them down one by one. That is quite fun in my opinion, and not very relaxed.
I really can't wait to try Arena in FFXIV. I'm pretty confident that my WoW arena experience will help me climb the learning curve quicker. From what I can see, surecast looks like a real neat thing to have as a Mage. In WoW it was just primarily the healing classes that had that type of ability. People are saying sleep is broken, it's really the same thing as Polymorph from WoW, BUT if I can sleep multiple targets at once then that is a problem for sure.
