After the XCOM series we had the UFO series with Aftermath, Aftershock and Afterlight. You can try those as well though they are a little different and not as good.
There is also the f2p UFO: Alien Invasion and then finally UFO: Extraterrestials.

best post ever, you win.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Care to elaborate what is "dumbing down" in this game?

I mean i get that people are upset about TUs gone, but how is that dumbing down the game?

"dumbing down" means "change any game mechanic at all" for some people. I enjoyed the original...a lot. But im really happy about the new system, I really get the same thing, but with a much smoother system. And its a lot less abusable than TUs

If we by "dumbing down" mean making the game less complicated, with less tactical decisions I can without playing the game name a few key points:

TUs exchanged for 2-stage choice of walking/shooting and sprinting.
They could at least made it somewhere in between, like a hybrid of the system in Silent storm which displays TU-cost and removing some weapon modes making it easy to use.

Large squads of 14+ soldiers exchanged for 4-5 soldiers.
This might be the big one, since the game needs to be balanced for playing a small squad this basically affects everything in the game. Larger squads allow grander strategy instead of just small squad tactics. It also allows for far worse soldiers, strength in numbers kind-of-thing that I don't see that often in games.

Friendly fire
I have not seen anyone blasting squadmates with explosives, but from what I've seen you can shoot through them.

From multiple bases to one.
Of course this is making it simpler, thus dumbing it down. Although I don't know anything about how the new geoscape will work with regard to fighting UFOs and stuff like that.

In my opinion it both dumbed down and giving new options.

I spent many hours watching the linked Let's play x-com videos on the last page and I did play the game a lot when I was younger. It has more basic options not connected with level or rank of soldiers.

New X-Com game removed inventory, ammo and firing options like snap, auto, aim and so on. It removed stances.
But most importantly due to these changes it removed the freedom of the player to equip his soldiers with weapons and ammo of his choosing only limited by weight and inventory space.
This led to stupid stuff like only having one rocket per mission or only 2 grenades and small number of medikit uses.

On the other hand this new X-com added all these abilities to classes and levels of those classes. It also added a lot of new unique abilities that original didn't have. They will all add plenty of new ways to play and combine them.

So I would not say the new X-com is dumbed down, but it is radically different. Lack of action units is not even that much of a problem, it is the smallest change (well it is the reason why there is not auto, snap or aim).

What I will lack the most is no friendly fire except with AoE weapons and lack of stances. Also I think compared to original X-com there is too much moral loss in new one. You lose one soldier and half of your squad can panic. In original your soldiers needed more friendly losses to lose it. Also when they went beserk they would fairly often be useful or at least not kill your party members as often. During all the videos I could see panic it too much of a penalty in new X-com

OK let me address these points, because i do not think it is made easier.

Looking at TUs in comparison to only 2 moves(which can be varied by abilities of soldiers) does not in fact make it simpler i think. The amount of TUs in my opinion made it easier, because you could move through a door, shoot an alien and move out(assuming the alien does not react). You can slowly inch forward and do not have to commit to anything that is not safe.

Smaller squads but a lot higher emphasis on a single soldier. I for one played the first x-com with around 14 soldiers, 6 of these mattered to me. The other 8 were just cannon fodder which was supposed to walk around, scout and die. For this makes it harder to decide, which move is the correct move, because if i make a mistake and Sgt. Fuzzy Boots, whom i carried around since the first mission, dies, i am royally screwed. This to me seems not easier but actually harder than the original.

I have no idea about friendly fire, but that is only a minor point in my eyes.

The fact that you only have one base, which you have to develop (you can station interceptors in bases on every continent) does not make it dumber just because it is easier. The decision where you place your first base, matters so much more because of the initial bonus that base will give you(e.g Europe cheaper Sci and Eng, US cheaper air force, Asia better future warfare).

I for one think saying it is simpler thus making it dumber, is just flawed logic. No one would say that chess is a dumb game, even though it is simple.

Btw. anyone on TL interested in playing Multiplayer once the game is out?

The multiplayer mode is kind of a turn off for me to be honest. I hate this trend that developers/publishers want to squeeze a multiplayer mode into anything nowadays.

I seriously hope the single player aspect of the game did not suffer from this.

I'm curious how I'll feel about the other changes. Sad to hear there is no friendly fire, I had a lot of comical situations from both sides that a stray shot would just hit something else in the dark. Also the moral aspect would end in hilarious results sometimes and I loved it that you could even make the enemies panic.

Apart from that I probably loved base and squad management the most in the old ones. Having only one base and 6 soldiers makes everything more streamlined and less work, but I'm not really sure if that's what I want.

Anyways, does anyone remember the game Sabre Team? That's how I first got into this genre.

I has a flavor

Basically you buy units for points, you can combine humans and aliens, and just fight a opponent, that has chosen the same amount of points. Just like in Warhammer, the better the unit the more points it costs

I spent all night last night playing X-Com. I always forget how fucking hard that game is if you don't abuse saves. My first mission was a landed medium UFO that killed half my squad, then I lost my entire squad on my second mission. I was able to sell everything and get a new squad of rookies with all laser rifles and laser pistols in time for the first terror mission, then half my squad was taken out by floaters and the other half by like five of those big ugly tank-dogs that have like 500 TUs and insta-gib anyone they get close to.

Definitely excited to try out the remake. It sounds like a lot of what I like about the original won't be there, but I don't really see what the big deal is about that - the original is still there!

And yes the game is different. A dumbed down version, even Jake Solomon admits that. You can either enjoy it, or hate it. It's not like you don't have any other options. I will enjoy it. Have fun with your endless drama whinefest :D

I haveb't watched the series in a few years but I remembee kiko telling that he had a fix for that and the game didn't change into beginner. I'll post the exact time he says it if I spot it again.

There's friendly fire with free-aim stuff (grenades, etc).

You can have multiple interceptor's bases around the world. Each base can have some interceptors.
