Looks kinda nice, except for all shots through stuff (like walls and units).

Just played through the demo. Certainly not much for 5GB of download, but I enjoyed it. I know people have really high expectations and will get disappointed... but I don't since I never played any of the older X-coms. This was what I expected and it definitely delivered.

Nice interactive video:

Edit: oh, and it's really great, much better than the demo heh

I can't wait. Big fan of the series, and even if it's a bit different, we will always have xenonauts for a more classic approach, but this one looks awesome too.

and holy shit if that wasn't a bug when shots went through friendly units without them taking damage...

There's been no specific confirmation either way on that one from the devs in all the interviews I've seen, and no instances of shooting through a friendly causing damage. I've seen people try to induce it to happen in the demo, (line everyone up between a unit and an alien and shoot through them) without causing damage. I'm hoping like heck that's just a bug.

I've played xcom1/2 since a kid and I can't wait for this game.

Pre-ordered it but currently getting distracted in MoP. I have high expectations for the game so hope it doesn't disappoint

Ok, well Civ V is pretty bad I never played the original xcoms, should I get them on steam to hold me over? And I've heard they're pretty hard, so would I need a guide to get started or just figure it out as you go along? Thanks

If you never played the original Enemy Unknown and don't plan to, I would recommend the Let's Play by Kikoskia. He's hilarious and not doing the cheesy "save every 10 seconds and load whenever I miss a shot". I recommend everyone to watch that actually.

Dont spoil yourself too much. Just get them!

The old XCOM games are actually easy to learn. You dont really need a guide.

The hard part is the actual missions where rockets and plasma shit hits you out of nowhere.

You should get X-COM and try it! It's just so good.

The first time you play, start with beginner (no shame in that, it's a hard game), and don't use a guide. The game will be easy enough to forgive most of your mistakes. This will let you experience the game the way it was meant to be, as a commander of an elite paramilitary force fighting an unknown enemy. You get freaked out every time a new type of alien appears, and that's a good thing.

After that, it's up to you. Fire up UFOpaedia and crank-up the difficulty. Start diving into game-engine mechanics. One of the things I enjoyed most in xcom was lining-up aliens with mind-control to be shot down by reaction-fire firing squad, just to boost soldier stats. It was an exploit, but it was fun. The alien would twitch, get shot by a hail of pistol bullets that did almost no damage, panic the next turn, get shot some more, and then finally die. Then I'd mind-control the next alien and march him up to the firing squad. It was a fun end-game ritual after mopping-up a UFO crash site or something. My super-soldiers could out-draw anything but an ethereal commander.
You must construct additional pylons.

Those moments when you get in the field with some rookie mixed on your veteran squad.

Commander - "Welcome to X-Com Rookie Yamato. We are glad to have you."
Yamato - "Can i have some armor?"
Commander - "No, take this blaster bombs instead and run to the enemy"

Just found a cheap key for the game and preordered it. I'm always kinda sceptical when it comes to remakes and I'm still quite sure I'll somehow be a little disappointed.

I loved the original X-COM games (well 1 and 2) and even play them on and off up to today.
I has a flavor

UFO Defense is a bit easier to learn. Newbies might want to consult a tech tree if they are doing TFTD, though.

I want to try this series out since I never did as a kid and it looks really fun.
Which game should I start out with? I figured I would just start with Enemy Unknown but I was wondering if there were better games in the series that I should play first.

All is big word :p Enemy Unkown, Terror from the Deep and Apocalypse are good imo but stuff like Interceptor is beyond bad :p
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death
