I failed to mention the chaos started when a thin man literally dropped on the EXACT SAME SPOT as where my sniper was parked on the roof. Obviously I couldn't move because 2 thin men were on overwatch. I sniped the first one from afar, but the one on the roof literally squad wiped me (overwatch killed one trying to climb up the roof, next turn blasted my sniper, tried to kill him again with my 3rd guy but only did 3 damage then died the next turn -_-).

So I'm thinking, if one has to know the map to do well, do the aliens always drop or come out of the exact same spots? Is that why some of you who beat the game on classic or ironman do well because you're accustomed to where the aliens will spawn?

My other dilemma I keep finding myself is proc'ing the aliens (again mainly thin men). I move carefully into covers, then overwatch, and the moment I proc a group that has a shot on me next turn I run back to cover so they don't see me. The problem is my overwatch soldiers take the shots of the thin men and miss, then I essentially get crit the same turn under half or full cover (even under Hunker!)... like I'm starting to think overwatch can be severely useless, and falling back completely might be better. But the problem is if they don't find you then they go on overwatch, and if you overstep they react fire to you which is just as bad -_-

All story missions are completely scripted, so aliens always spawn in the same locations. All Council missions feature aliens that magically drop in and overwatch. Alien waves in escort missions are triggered by the VIP moving. The combination of these features makes that mission go from being fairly challenging to a total snooze once you know what'll happen.

Half cover is no cover. Don't use it unless you absolutely don't have any other options, especially against thin men, they have a 55% chance to hit a unit in low cover (goes down to 35% with high cover). Heavies are great against thin men, as they can frequently kill multiple with a single rocket.

Not to mention thin men die to shredder rocket, so you can potentially kill 2 groups with the heavy alone.

Portent was difficult on Ironman, but after playing it on a normal Classic playthrough and learning the map, it's not that hard. Have 2 guys on the roof and a mech trooper in the hallway to the extraction before you move the VIP past the first building and your'e golden.

One thing that's very important: In all VIP missions and EXALT missions, returning the VIP alone will NOT END THE MISSION, you must either extract your whole team (fails a VIP mission but not EXALT mission) or kill everything for the mission to end. Don't blow a bunch of no cover moves to get the VIP in and say "Oh shit" when the aliens get another turn.

The Infestation mission is likewise quite easy once you realize that you can get on top of the ship without spotting the whale, thus allowing you to set up enough overwatch to protect the person who's turning on the transponder. Once that's on, the rest of the mission is quite easy.

Also, lots of love for Memetic skin here, but there are a lot of maps where full cover is sparse or not practical to run to, so it's not quite as absurdly broken as you make it out to be, though an assault with memetic skin and an alloy cannon can get serious work done if the circumstances are right.

The other skin upgrade (I forget what it's called atm) is actually also absurdly useful. You can find aliens around corners and know whether or not you're going to set them off, allowing you to play on your terms. Additionally, it instantly reveals all seekers nearby, making them trivial.

Also I was kind of disappointed + Show Spoiler +
That there was no "boss" to the EXALT base mission, nor was there alien assistance. I mean the mission was still difficult due to the sheer number of heavies they have, but still, not as cool as I'd hoped.

Yes, the EXALT base was pretty disappointing. When it was done, I was "what, is that it?"! I didn't even explore the last 1/3 of the map. I hope they do something about it in some future patch or DLC or Expansion but seeing as people still complain how they finish last boss in one double shot squadsniper action I guess Firaxis does not care.
I still find it funny how they only fixed the teleport bug with the expansion and claim to have fixed cover bugs although I have still seen some. Not to mention if units stand on ramps but just one square before the level ground you cannot see them LOL if you are not on the ramp as well!!! This also happens when such units are Sectopods that even with being a bit lower are still taller then my unit that somehow cannot see him or target him LOL

Portent on impossible is quite a mess, i can tell you that. 6 HP thinmen are tough as fuck, because normally you won't have beam weapons ready for that one, and it heavily relies on how many soldiers you have (officer lounge). Since XP has been nerfed, and on impossible fairly often you will have injured or KIA soldiers, it's rare that you have a captain, so you may have 5 soldiers if you have the cash, or slack a bit on sats, but with the build order i use, i had to do it with 4 soldiers. And i can tell you, it was a freaking pain in the ass, i had to be very careful in that one, even tho i already made it before on classic (started one, only did two months and jumped to impossible).

When i finish this I/I playthrough i will play with training roulette, it looks like loads of fun.

Btw, the MEC on impossible is worthless, atleast on early game. You lose too much time and resources on it, and at the end, it is just one soldier more. Instead i prefer to prioritize upgrades that i can use it more widely on my soldiers.

There's a weird LoS bug in the EXALT mission where you can see through the top of the walls to the rooms if you are on the roof. I rushed the roof on my first try and I was able to see almost the entire big room from the skylight above the lobby. That aggrod quite a few packs <_<

Just some advice to people having trouble playing on Ironman Classic.
-1. Turn off tutorial
1. Pick NA as starting region - because they give you most money at start.
2. build 4 satellites before 10 days pass (they build for 20 days and need to be ready before Council Report) - sell anything you get from missions if you need to but wait until you get first engineers from abduction mission before you start building them
3. on first Abduction take Engineer mission ALWAYS! - it will give you access to workshop and you need engineers to build new Satellite Uplink.
4. Build Workshop ASAP and when it is finished build Satellite uplink next to the first one. Have areas ready to build these buildings (it takes 5 days to dig earth from area). Workshop builds for 10 days and Uplink for 14. You need to have both ready before Council Report
5. With extra money get Power Building and Officer School after you have satellites, workshop and satellite uplink building.
6. With research get weapon research and then beam weapons. If you do it like this, you can have laser rifles and pistols before first Terror mission. I also managed to squeeze in Meld Research.
7. If you done everything OK, you will be able to Launch 4 satellites at end of month before Council Report. If possible cover all 3 Africa countries and some other with most panic. General rule of launching satellites is to save countries that might leave the council, and then 2nd one is to finish covering all countries in one continent (when you do cover them all you no longer get Abduction missions in that area there which means you can control Panic more easily).
8. Now you got lots of money and can survive missions failures more easily. For month two your goal is to build another Satellite Uplink and 3-4 more satellites as well as whatever else you fancy.

TLDR: This is how you can finish Classic Ironman without losing any council member (of course you also must do most of your combat missions)

Ok after my first EXALT mission and getting wiped (yes maybe I'm bad but thin men are a bitch one council mission after another), I decided to try again.

I tried doing this again, step by step, and I don't know how you got steps 1-4 to work. After doing the first abduction mission and getting 4 engineers, you're still short 1 engineer to start your satellite uplink immediately. So you build the workshop after the 1st abduction mission right? Ok, but doing so it takes at least 10 days or something to build just to get that ONE engineer you need. By the time I started building the 2nd satellite uplink the council report was like a few hours (same day) before finishing and therefore I couldn't deploy my satellites I built. So I don't know if there's just some variation to the game, or this was doable in EU, but I cannot duplicate what you just did. The satellites I managed to build if I sold almost everything and dedicated the majority of my earnings to building them.

You need to start building a workshop by day 1. That way you will be able to get the engineers sacrilegious. When the workshop ends, you will build the sat uplink. Don't forget to plan out how to build your structures for the bonus. Like this.

+ Show Spoiler +

And here my first impossible ironman run on EW going better than great, they changed the panic and sat system on impossible, so you only need 3 sats for the most part, sometimes you need the extra one, but it's much easier to do than before.

You can't build a workshop without having more than your default number of engineers

True that, you start the workshop after the first abduction mission. It has to be by day 6 or before for it to work, as i explained on the last page.

To get the 10 engineers on first month you have to get this (to be honest, i don't know if they changed it, because i got it at my first time with the EW campaign, i think they did):

- Abduction mission at day 6 or less, you choose the engineers. When you end it, you start building a workshop.
- Wait until day 10 for an UFO. Sell stuff (if you can, the last thing i seel are alloys and weapon fragments, as they are my highest priority early game), get satellites and save 150 for the satellite uplink.

I wrote long time ago on this thread a build on how to tech first month or buy stuff to get the 4 sats, and if you can't get them, just go the tech route (but always, get the workshop, you will need it).

The only error there could be the satellite uplink pricing, i see100 on my game right now, but i remember it being more costly. Maybe it's my memory from enemy unknown, no clue.

Sorry, guess it's been a couple of days and I forgot because of the amount of posts that followed yours.

Anyway the abduction mission was likely on the day of or slightly after day 6 from what I remember. If that's the case, then that's the game itself right and there's nothing I can essentially do?

If it's day 6, it's fine. The problem comes with day 6, because you won't be able to set up the workshop + satellite uplink. If that happens, cancel the workshop, get only 1 sat, and get the officer´s building as soon it pops would be my advice. Maybe you could also get the MEC, it depends on the difficulty you are on and how well you manage the early game tho.

Don´t worry too much about losing countries, try to go for a few bonus if you are having a hard time or you prefer to tech up, and just play however you feel. Even on impossible you can do fine that way.

What Godwrath said. You need to get Abduction mission before day 6. It is a bit random when you get it but most of the time it will be before day 6.

And I must say I don't like the Satellite = money at end of month mechanic. It just forces you to go through these stupid openings only caring about having those satellites built before end of month. It should be changed so you can deploy satellites at any time and not lose anything.

This game..

Playing I/I and it was going so well, 4 or 5 months in, no council members lost, Lasers on most soldiers, etc, etc.

Then the base defence mission came, first time playing it. Would have been nice if I didn't just send my best assault on a covert mission and my 4 other best men where wounded.

Sure, all my soldiers had laser weapons and at least 2 ranks. But my team consisted of heavies and supports and 1 bad sniper.

Somehow I made it to the last wave, but 2 alien mind controllers and alien mec's + discs was just to much.

"Yeah buddy"

I don't understand why people would send there good soldiers as Covert Ops. The ops spawn is from my experience always safe so you just have him hunker down while your actual team of good soldiers walks around clearing enemy's if its the com relay mission and if its the decoder he needs to do even less.

Sending your best just makes you lose access to him for a long time.

ps.
In case some people didn't realize. Assaults are imo the best covert class to send since you can use a com relay after a run&gun, doubling his effective move range.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

No. Support with extra move or Sniper with Mimetic skin is best. Well high level snipers at least.
I tried using Assault because I was planning to fight with him if needed but in the end he only had one kill.

I am reasonably short on money and I am deciding if this new DLC/Patch/Addon thing is worth it. Now that a couple of people have played it, does it kick ass? I am going to be playing on classic ironman and expect to get my ass kicked again since I am actually not that good at the game :D

First month is same. Second months can be a bit different based on your tech choices. Rest of the game has a lot of new stuff.

Only thing you will notice from the start are the new maps or changed old ones.
And if it is worth 30$, that depends from person to person. For less you can get Baldur's Gate 2 EE which gives you 100+ h of playtime at least.

If you liked Enemy Unknown you're gonna love the expansion. It adds some nice new options, expands your squad and developement possibilities, adds fun, new council missions, some new enemies and plenty other stuff. If you were into the game, or like strategy/tactics games it's 100% worth it to get Enemy Within. I'm loving every second of it, even if I'm getting my ass kicked.
