However, if I go to fullscreen mode (setting it in baldur.ini or pressing alt+tab), it's messed up because the game is set to a high resolution but my monitor automatically goes to 640*480 regardless, so I can only see a small portion of the screen.
Does anyone know a fix, or a third party program so I can force my monitor to stay in 1650x1080? What's the native resolution on your monitor and what resolution is your desktop set to? 1650x1080 Apparently this is specific to the GOG installations. I have the original disc sets and am using BGTutu with the widescreen mod so I'm not familiar with that installation. If the game originally loads up as windowed, have you tried undoing the widescreen change and going fullscreen in the in-game options? If that works fine, I'd reinstall the widescreen mod changes with that setup and see how it goes. Yeah, I've tried reinstalling, resetting etc, the monitor refuses to show the game in anything but 640x480. I wonder what the problem can be, GOG themselves recommend the widescreen mod so it should work just fine. Could it maybe have something to do with Win8...

It could. My brother was running the GOG version with recommended mods at 1650x1080 in Win7 without any problems.

Is there a compatibility mode or something similar in Win8?

Is there a compatibility mode or something similar in Win8? Windows 8 is already supposed to be 100% compatible with Windows 7. It has the same compatibility settings as Windows 7 does, but they change nothing about my situation.

What are the Clay Golems in Black Pits vulnerable to?

I haven't played the black pits, but since I am a complete geek...
d&d 2e clay golems were vulnerable to magic blunt weapons. Any mace/flail/hammer/staff with +1 or better.

True.
As to widescreen mod. I had problems in BG2 when i changed the resolution in the ingame settings cuz it was conflicting with the mod and just screwed up everything. Had to select a specific resolution in the config for it to work with widescreen again. Might be the same for BG1. Dunno if you can change the resolution ingame tho.

I'm not sure of the level limit, I believe it's 10 or so.
The game does include BG2 spells but limited to what you can cast (nothing above level 5 iirc). But this means stuff like Find Familiar are in the game.
Basically - think of the BG2 system (kits, spells, weapon proficiencies, etc) with an added kit (Blackguard)

Okay guys. I've been trying to solo Sorcerer but its really really hard. I chose find familiar and orb as my first two spells, I'm only level 2 at the moment, but I can't fight crap because my spells are weak and limited. I use darts but thats not enough. Where can I go to get some easy risk-free early exp?

I really hope GoG will have a sale on Baldur's Gate this winter! Anyone know if this is confirmed?

Oh man...I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're going to have a rough time. Mages/sorcers are very squishy and ineffective early in the game, and sorcerer is even tougher for newer players because you have to be very very careful what spells you choose, or you permanently gimp yourself (unlike a mage). In this case you wasted one of your valuable spell slots (Find Familiar). I highly suggest you start over, or use an editor to change your spells to more useful ones (like Sleep + Magic Missle).
If you insist on playing this char, know that you'll never be the strongest person in your party. Pick up some strong melee fighters (Dorn, Minsc, Kagain, etc) and just accept that you'll be more or less useless until level 4+ as you pick up more spells (and even then not be as strong as some NPC mages).

Im not new(beat BG1 long time ago and beat BG2 many many times) and a lot of veterans players recommend taking find familiar for the tanking / hp bonus perks
Whats the point of solo'ing if I'm going to recruit someone?
I just need to find a easy low level quests or easy exp methods

Find familiar is quite an important spell, as it gives you +12 hitpoints, even when the familiar isnt out. Neutral familiars also have some thieving skills, which can be useful. If you are LN sorc (so you have the ferret) you can pickpocket alganons cloak and use all the charm person charges to help you fight.
As for easy xp: basilisks east of the beregost temple, in the zone where Shar Teel is. Tell the talking ghoul that you want to be his friend and he will follow and fight for you. Ghouls are immune to petrification, and basilisks are worth a lot of xp.
If you dont mind the repuation hit. Firebead is an easy 2700 xp. Assuming you got the potion of mind shielding from candlekeep, you can go to his home in beregost and will have 3 rounds to kill him before he does any damage to you.

You still don't take it as one of the sorcerer spells. You use a scroll of find familiar.
As for basilisk, taking protection from petrification spell also works to kill basilisks. It should last long enough to kill them 1 by 1.

since you only need/can only get 1 familiar i think the previous answer is pretty spot on.
theres a vampiric wolf in the far east of the zone called temple next to beregost. usually go there and kill him early for xp ( 2k )
make sure you pull him and his friends 1 by 1 since youre soloing though.

Correct me if I am wrong: the first find familiar scroll if from Nimbul? The early game would go a lot smoother if you can just have a ferret from the start. But as I have never solod a sorc through BG1 I really dont know what you have to give up for it.
|
^^ cant you just go to the zone where kivan is from the start and get one from the wizard merchant there? maybe buy one in beregost?
rly cant tell ...
can you still get the uber op wizard ring hidden in a bush near friendly arm inn? might be pretty badass for a noobwizard!

I have a few tips that can help you out a lot. Enchantment spells are godly in BG1, so take Sleep as one of your level 1 spells, and also use your familiar to fight for you at level 1. The PseudoDragon is a pretty damn good tank, with -2 AC and Blur, put him in the frontline while you shoot darts from the back. When you get to level 2, take Horror, since it's another amazing spell. But really, if you're not a veteran pro, i wouldn't recommend solo sorceror, it's just too hard. Try an Elven F/M/T, specialized in long bows/long swords. You will have a much easier time.

While sleep is good early game is it useless soon later. It is better to use scrolls of these spells at right times then wasting permanent spell slots. The thing about solo play is your character gets all XP and levels fast so you don't really need to waste time and life to fight small groups of enemies that sleep is most useful against. Just kill the ones that are on your way to important quests. Invisibility is one of the better spells you can take as it lets you escape any fight and pick the fights when you want them.
