I myself had only bought BG2 and add-on and later played BG1 with big-world project which was a major pain in the ass to get working btw. Perfect chance to snatch up BG:EE and just start playing. Ufffffff. 3 days and 5 attempts I needed to get it working with only recommended mods. But then even those were completely broken and made the game crash and whatnot. They also let me get access to magic items that even my BG2 characters would not be ashamed of using. I had to drop them all on the ground and forget about them lol.
I feel you. Everythign but the most basic Mods made my BG2 go batshit crazy... Graphicall bugs, broken quests, installed mods that didn't made it fully into the game... Weird stuff.

True. Most basic mods were installed and running in a matter of minutes. I.e. widescreen, ease of use and even the NPC mods. Big world project on the other hand was literally the biggest pain in the ass that I have ever encountered while trying to get a game to work.
Psyched for BG:EE. Haven't played any baldur's gate in ages. Oh the nostalgia.

You already can. I have no idea how it works in Freespace, but fixing BG1 so that it works awesomely on a modern PC is not really any amount of work, you only have to put in as much work as you want out of it.
Looking at the video above, I can barely see any difference. I'm not talking about the graphics, I'm talking about the interface, inventory etc looks identical, I don't see the point. It's basically BG1TUTU with the widescreen fix applied, and a new dungeon mod. In what world can that possibly be worth money, and in what world can it take this amount of time for them to release it?
To me, it seems like the arguments early on in this thread: It's just trying to cash in on an iPad port of an old game. Erm, it's identical except the interface is the BG 2 interface? Which was a pretty big improvement at the time, especially the inventory. It looks to me like it's BG 2 with the BG1 storyline and that is great. And they've updated the resolution so it's not only the aspect ratio that is changed. This works for me, at least for this game. I'm not really sure what they'll do to improve BG2 ( since it's pretty much perfect lulz ) but if they only improve the graphics slightly... meeeeeeh. But you could already do all of that with a few simple mods. Tutu made bg1 run on the bg2 game (interface). Then you added the windscreen mod and set your resolution. I am a fan of baldurs gate, but if you already own bg1 and bg2 then you can do everything that bgee does (and a LOT more) just by installing a few mods. So you can play the new 'Black Pits' adventure with a bunch of addons? I dunno about folks here but i work full time, 20 bucks is nothing to me so i don't care.
Anyway i bought it yesterday and already preloaded it, i am looking forward to playing through it again. When will it be activated in Australia? we are 12 hours in front of eastern US time here.

I'm waiting to see the quality of the Ipad port, I'd love to play it while commuting

EasyTutu and Widescreen mod is all you need really. Easy installation, 0 problems afterwards.

If you don't care about spoilers, the new cinematics are available in the preload folder. I like the new art style for them but I wish they were a bit longer... What do you guys think?

There is a huge amount of modded content. You could play 100 new adventures if you wanted to.
I really want to like BGEE. The problem is the feeling of being ripped off. It is about the principle rather than the money (I will happily drop 60usd on a game that I think deserves it. Heck, it's been Steam sales all week. I am sure we have all spent more than 20 dollars on games this week.
|
Dunno why anyone would feel ripped off. BG1 still costs 10 bucks. You expect them to sell the enhanced edition at the same price? 20 bucks is nothing for a good game.
Nobody who wants to get into a new game wants to look where to download mods, how to install mods and do the research on which mods are essential, which mods are useful and which mods are pretty bad for newcomers. When was the last time where you guys bought a game where it's essential that you use mods before you can start? Rarely anyone would do that for a game that he doesn't know already.
Why do you think this release is for players that have played the game 5 times over with any mod imaginable anyways? Like i said numerous times this game is so more people get interested and can get easy access with comfortable controls on the platform they like.
|
Lol i tried the modded content including a widescreen mod.During gameplay it worked fine but bringing up the map screen the map would still be in 640*480 - you needed a microscope to see the thing.Same with the main menu. The mods were glitchy as heck, its worth paying a small fee to not have to bother with that stuff especially for new players.

I already have every games from the Infinity engine era :Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and addons / Icewind Dalte 1 & 2 / Planescape Torment. I bought them more than 10 years ago like everyone else and I still have the CDs working. I used them with every mods available, BG1 with the BG2 engine was just a fucking blast the first time I tried it I couldn't believe it.
But I'm still buying BGEE, why ?
Because I heard the words : Baldur's gate III
My heartbeat just increased by typing those three words. As a gamer this has been a dream for more than 10 years, 20 bucks is fucking NOTHING compared to the possibility that we might have this game one day.
So I'll buy it, eyes closed.

Now I'm going to be fair and state that I have no idea how much this developer has actually done. We know there's a new character and some stuff like that, apparently new cutscenes as well which is pretty sweet. But what it looks like in the videos? Basically a normal BG1Tutu install. Which anyone of us could do in 10 minutes, burn on a CD and sell... for 20 dollars? Now that's an insanely sick deal for us, not the consumers.
Basically, one has to ask themselves what they are paying for. When I pay 10 dollars for the original BG1, I buy one of the best RPGs in the history of games. Late to the party, sure, but that's what I buy. When I pay 20 dollars for BGEE, I'm buying a premodded copy of BG1. Yeah, it's still that same awesome RPG, but it's different in principle.
20 dollars is nothing, anyone of us who works fulltime can pay that for a glass of water if we're inclined to do so, the question is how comfortable you feel about the situation, that a developer is pretty much making money out of nothing. Is there a chance this developer will eventually make a BG3? Personally, I think no. They are a group of people who take old games and make them look more presentable and release them, I seriously doubt they have the creative capacity to make a worthy sequel.

I must say, when I first heard about the project I was excited, but looking at the screenshots/vod, it looks like they brought the graphics and interface up to the level of... Baldur's Gate 2 which came out 12 years ago...
|
I'm trying to order it to preload but the website is slow as fuuuck

@Tobberoth: It is not tutu+mods. It got a whole new inventory, quest and character information. It lets you zoom in and out. It will have a properly working MP crossplatform and cloud saves. It has really fast loading screens and a bit better pathfinding. It has 3 new NPC each with its own new area, VO and lots of interaction with already existing quests from BG1. It got all BG2 goodies and a new class on top. It got a completely new adventure. It got 400 bug fixes. The resolution was fixed and made better for BGEE, not just what widescreen mode does. It got new music and new cutscenes. AND it installs all this as part of same installation without problems and hassle; the game will not be unstable or crash as a result. If all that is not worth extra 10$ then you are crazy.
As for BG3, even if this team will not make BG3 if BGEE and BG2EE don't sell well nobody will make BG3. You can be sure someone will do BG3 if these two games sell well. The thing is, they are not testing the market of old players but of new players that never played these epic games. Before someone cashes out huge money for making of a sequel they need to know there are enough people waiting to buy it.

If you think that graphics matter in a game like this, it's probably not for you.

I'm not gonna lie guys. I won't buy it or support it in any way. What they're doing is basically re-creating the work community put to keep the game alive after they abandoned it. Now that they realized people are still playing it and enjoying it and how some of the mods have improved on the game they decided to get on the cash-cow and release it themselves (for a price). If they really wanted to create BG3, they would, but no, we're getting a rehash of their old title with improvements that aren't really anything new right now. The only real innovation in it is making it compatible with iPad and similar devices. All in all, it reeks of a big "fuck you" towards the community which popularized and kept the game alive and now they're going to make money on this foundation which took years of effort and voluntary hard work for people. All I can say is "fuck you back, Overhaul Games".
|
aaaand they took my money. Now I'm stuck with another shitty game client... something needs to be done about this.
|
Needless to say I'm getting this, I haven't been this excited for a game (not counting SC2) since waiting for my pre-order of Baldurs Gate 2: Collectors Edition back in the day.
|
When will u finally realize that this game isnt for you. They didn't rework it so everyone who has bg1 buys it again... They never said they were gonna innovate or make BG 2.5. What the hell did you guys expect honestly? Some people in here actually thought they would throw the infintiy engine aboard for better graphics? Do you know how many ressources that would cost for such a huge game. Content-wise the game is bigger than any recent rpg anyways.
This is to get new players into the game. No fuckin person ever wants to buy a game that requires mods just to run on their machine. Have to first research which mods are essential and absolutely needed, where to get them, how to install, which mods are too advanced, which mods work with each other and all that for a 12 year old game just to get it running.
This Enhanced version is to get more people into it and not please the over critical nay-sayers who want a new baldur's gate with a new engine, a new main story line and full voice overs for 15 bucks.
You have played a great game with BG1 and they are making it accessible for a lot more people who never had the pleasure of playing it. How can someone be mad about that.
And I'm pretty sure this Enhanced Edition is to gauge the market. Even when BG3 is very very far away from ever being done the developers want to put their feelers out if there is even any interest in games like this beside the old people who played BG1 before.
I'm gonna sum it up again: They got a new dungeon which probably takes as much time as Black Ops 2, new characters with voice and interactions, hopefully removed all bugs, improved vision/resolution (it's far better than widescreen mod), improved inventory, added cut scenes , improved interface looks and size, make it accesible to all platforms and it's installed in one go and they stabilized multiplayer.
Again, what the hell did people expect from enhanced edition? Nothing reasonable that they haven't done is in their budget and in the price-range of 15-20 dollars. Think about it please.
