Not a pressing need since I have Andre Johnson, Dez Bryant, Vincent Jackson as top 3 WR. But my team's been hella injury-prone this year so I want a decent backup.

While I love the auto-congratulation going around the 49ers here, I just want to note that his defense got 2 INT return for touchdowns. I'm not sure they would have won without these 2 with Kaepernick despite his uncanny ability to elude tackles by a team known for having collectively missed tackling 101 in PeeWee football. If anything the 49ers have made the right decisions 2 years ago when they signed Aldon Smith ...

Obviously this is all speculation, but I think that the Niners may well have lost that Saints game had Smith been the starter, regardless of the two interception returns for touchdowns. Smith would have eaten several sacks, whereas Kaepernick wasn't sacked once despite being under a lot of pressure at times. EDIT: And just to support this a little bit, go look at what happened to Smith in the Minnesota and NYG games where the pass rush was all over him. He basically was useless.

I think it's the right move for alex, if alex came back before all the kaep lovers would chat for kaep on first incompletion for smith etc. This way he can throw in alex as the hero, must be hard for alex though not playing people chanting for another qb is nothing different for him though. Haters gonna hate but alex still plays. Honestly i can't see kaep working perfectly when the change is this late in the season, i mean when it comes down to crunch time alex knows how to work the hurry up offense for the niners and he does it well. I was looking forward to kaep debut next season i just worry about niners play-offs. Or smith would have done what he always done against the blitz, read it and check it down to like gore or w.e, he hit something like 300 yards 4TD's, 0 INT and was only sacked 3-4 times in the play off game against a better pass rush saints defense, it's not like he looses 10 yards on sacks smith usually only loses around 4-6 yards off a sack.

Yeah, but Smith never has had and never will have those types of games regularly. That game was exceptional, both in terms of quality and frequency of performance. The fact remains that Smith is one of the most sacked quarterbacks in the league. If you look at his numbers when he is forced from the pocket and scrambling, they're really not good. Granted, he protects the ball well, but he doesn't turn those plays into positive yardage very often.

Wouldn't be shocked to see him end up in Arizona to try and stick it to Harbaugh.

He's a playoff calibre quarterback that can manage a game and make plays when needed. The guy will get some good money after this season. Wouldn't be shocked to see him end up in Arizona to try and stick it to Harbaugh. Arizona would kill him he'd just end up re-injured, it's such a horrible o-line that got smith injured early on. It's been quite a bit of building getting our line in the condition it is now.

Which makes me so sad. Alex Smith is the exact type of quarterback the Vikings need. Not mistake prone and accurate/effective in the mid range passing game. I think he could make them a decently competitive team.

Who knows maybe by the play offs when teams have footage and are prepared for Kaep they'll play Smith
