KC has a love affair with qbs on other teams. One of the most fascinating stats I heard last year was that KC hasn't had a qb they drafted win a game for them since the 1980s.

Exactly. First #1 overall pick ever for the Chiefs.. and they're going to spend it on a LT, even though they already have a solid one. It's just sad. It's like the Matt Cassel trade all over again. And to think I was even excited for next year......

Well what other QB did you have your eye on?

You can also argue that with players like Tom Brady and Russell Wilson, not every franchise QB is found on day one (and I guess round two, in this case) of the draft.

So, when will the first QB be taken? Cardinals at 7 perhaps, but they already have a bunch of young guys so bills at 8 maybe ?

They'll probably trade out or pick up D-Line help. I doubt they're picking Joeckel #1.

I'm not positive about this, but I want to say that most of the current starting quarterbacks were taken outside of the first round, including a majority of the "franchise" ones. Without a doubt, a majority have been taken outside of the top 5 or 10 picks.

If that were the case, it'd just be cyclical, as only several years ago the vast majority of starting quarterbacks were first-rounders.

Maybe. I think that the largest takeaway though is that quarterback is one of the most mis-evaluated positions as well as one of the toughest to develop.

Oh yeah, and the other issue is that most of the teams that pick a QB don't surround them with the best of talent.

But I believe as of several years ago it appeared to be the case that the vast, vast majority of QBs came from the first round, and that later-round QBs were not nearly as successful with very few exceptions, at least as long-term franchise-calibur starting QBs.

Yeah, and thankfully Smith has talent around him. I don't know how the Chiefs O-line is, but they have Jamaal Charles, and a proven #1 receiver if they can resign Dwayne Bowe (I don't follow the Chiefs so I don't know the situation with that).

Smith isn't that bad of a QB he's proven when the talent is around him he can perform, quite a few qb's can't even do that.

Plus he's labeled as a high character kind of guy which is something the KC can use. That being said he's doing nothing to amp up any form of interest in that market. Smith is a decent QB but not a sexy one to the media.

I wouldn't say that. QB is still one of the positions that is more dominated by first rounders. Think of the current elite quarterbacks and only Tom Brady is a huge outlier. The ones that are not first rounders are usually second rounders.

Now compare that with running backs and wide receivers, where it's almost pointless to draft one in the first round unless they are insanely freaking good.

W.e this means for KC i think it's actually the best landing spot for smith so that's good on him. I do think chiefs paid a little high for only a 2 year contract? it's friendly for now but 2 years is a bit short.
