Behind the net there you need to have your head up, and especially while you're in a vulnerable area of the ice.
I mean you never like to see a guy lie on the ice like that, but I certainly don't think the hit was particularly malicious. You can't be staring at the boards behind you while you go to make a play, you just can't. Yes it would be. Shoulder to the head of a defencless opponent. He caught him in the jaw. The play in question is also charging, the player took several steps into him before the head. The play is also a boarderline boarding penalty. If that happened in the NHL the player would get at least 3 games, probably 5. He was going in on the forecheck... if you aren't skating hard on the forecheck your ass is staples to the bench. It also isn't boarding penalty, the guy didn't even hit the boards on the play, how can you board someone without boards? The guy got hit with his head down while two opposing players were skating hard, it happens. It wasn't a blindside it, he didn't target the head. Hell, if he wasn't looking at the advertisements on the boards everyone and their mom's dog would say it was an excellent hockey hit. Hell, Taylor Hall took the same hit in the neutral zone last night from Alexander Edler, he went off and broke his stick pissed he had his head down. Just because the onus is on the hitter to ensure the play is safe you can't penalize guys because the other player put themselves in a dangerous position without enough time for them to react. When you are skating hard on the forecheck, there is no time to react to a guy being dumb and looking at the boards instead of up ice. Taylor Hall got stood up at his own blueline. His head as down a little but he didn't take a head shot(maybe glacing blow to the head)
I watched the video again, I agree with what you said but a headshot is still a headshot. The way the NHL is taking the rules interpretation is that play is suspendable. They want to place some more onus on the players to let up more on hits.

So I think this is the point where us Canucks fans start screaming and running around like headless chickens, no?

They don't want players to go around letting up on hits, they want players to not take other guys heads off.
What do you want the offending player in that situation do? Poke at the puck and skate by doing nothing and leaving him one the wrong side of the puck with momentum going the other way? Sounds like a good way to get an odd man rush the other way and find yourself in the pressbox instead of the bench. You can't be scared to make a hit on the fore check and you can't just not finish your check... or maybe you can in the SM-Liga, I dunno.
The onus is on the hitter yes, but the hitter was doing everything he was supposed to. He glided into the hit, he went in with shoulders perpendicular, he finished his check and effectively seperated his man from the puck. Not seeing the hit coming is just a guy getting caught with his head down unaware of his surroundings. You get told exactly what that defenseman did on that play is bad from the age of 5. I'd equate this play on his behalf to sitting at the boards with he puck, then turning to face the boards right before the check; While the onus is on the hitter not to do something stupid, there is also an onus for guys to protect themselves. The guy didn't protect himself, he got rocked.
I do think guys need to respect eachother more, but you also need to respect yourself. If anything, that is the starting point. If you are respecting yourself, knowing the dangers around, then you aren't getting tagged and aren't being the who is the problem as well.
You don't like to see it, but occasionally collisions and injuries like this will happen in fast physical sports. Just because someone is injured doesn't mean someone did something dirty and cheap. Hopefully the guy is alright and can use this as a learning experience.

The avalanche break my heart.. Duchene is the most frustrating player in the NHL he is so good but has no chemistry with anyone on his team he fails to fill the role that he is ment to fill and always seems to do nothing. Gabriel Landeskog has been really fun to watch and he is coming into his own, also O'Reilly has been explosive, and the goaltending has been great. If we cannot generate offense I am just going to die these next few months... Its going to a ride thats for sure

The Oil on a tear too. Renney Magic. I would love to see them sneak in as a low seed.

Washington vs Edmonton has the making of being one of the nights best games. Both teams are willing to play the fast north/south chance trading style. We very well could see a game that has a final score of 7-6. Of course both teams have been surprisingly strong in goal and on defence so probably not 7-6.
I'm hoping for another strong night from RNH. This is game number 9 and want this kid to stay. A damn good game here should kill any notion of sending him back to Red Deer. Given how well hes played already I cannt belive the Oiler managment hasn't already told him he's staying past 9 games.
I'm really excited for this game!

Except Edmonton can't score more than 2 goals a game so 7-2 Washington is more likely =(.
Clash of the titans - Ovechkin vs. Khabi - lolz.
Should be a good one =)

Tell that to Luongo.

Currently 8-7 Winnipeg against Philly. Philly has 44 shots on goal, 24 for Winnipeg. Defence much? I wish I could watch this game because it looks like a crazy exciting game! 5:40ish left in 3rd at time of post

Winnipeg takes it 9-8. Haven't seen a game like that in ages.
Crazy night in the NHL thus far and the Oilers and Caps just started.
NYC crowd never disappoints. Bad night to be a goalie at the Garden. The ice still needs work sadly too ;/
P.K. Subban versus Marchand was fun.

Oilers lead the Caps 2-1 going into the second intermission, I am a touch concerned as I think Budreau will have the Caps fired up after them taking stupid lackadaisical penalties, and I think that they will likely see some make-up calls to even up the PP chances.
Other than that, I think the Oilers are holding their own out there. Certainly outworking the Caps. You can tell why the caps are 7-0-0 though, they play so incredibly cohesive, possess the puck well, and have a great team play commitment. I think this is the first team the Oilers have played this year who have as well planned and executed system as they do all year.
|
That's one of the reasons they are my favorite team. =)
|
The Caps poured it on like only they can in the 3rd. They outclassed Edmonton in every way.
Except goaltending. The Bulin Wall stood on his head to maintain the 1 goal lead. The fans told you at the end with a VERY loud Khabby Khabby chant.
|
Make those caps 7-1-0!
^_^
<3 Nikolai Khabibulin. He just stole the game for us, remarkable third period by Bulin. The Oilers didn't deserve that win, but we'll take it. Love seeing team defence, goaltending and special teams like this.
If Khabbi is this good all year I can't see the Oilers not making the playoffs.
Also, Corey Mutha Truckin Potter. Guy has 6 points in 7 games... remarkable. It isn't even like he is a Marc-Andre Bergeron who sucks in his own zone, he is amazing in his own end. I keep thinking he will show me some weakness but he just doesn't. This season just keeps getting better and better.

Glad to see the Oil putting up some results again. Hopefully this is the confidence building year and then the next year they really take off.
+ Show Spoiler + Added a link to help out people on TL who might be interested in Hockey but are not sure of what the fuck to look out for. It is the best sport on Earth and also the hardest to start watching without much knowledge of what is going on

Well, they might not need to wait a year the way they are playing. We are first in the North West Division as of tonight.
That being said, we need to find some more secondary scoring. Getting a Hemsky healthy and finding a way to have Gagner and Paajarvi start putting up some points is crucial in order for the team to maintain success. Both Gagner and Paajarvi are pointless this year (although to be fair Gagner's only played 3 games) which is obviously unnacceptable for a second line.
Aside from that, all is good. Great Defence, good faceoff play, excellent puck support, amazing specialty teams, and likely the best goaltending in the league with the way Khabbi has played.

I was at the Vancouver - St. Louis game. At least David Booth had some good chances and Sulzer was pretty impressive. Fans are really fucking annoying, though.

The Nuge be tearing shit up.

Nah man, not when it comes to the Nuge. I've been watching that asshole for years in Red Deer. Can't say there were many Oilers fans happier than I was when they picked him up. He's the best kid I've ever seen play in our little WHL city.
But since you asked for something jaded, I better deliver. I've been having a hard time coming up with fresh ways to tell Flames fans to fuck the fuck off lately as they get on the "oh well, we can watch the other Alberta team for now" train. Fucking Flames fans. They've never seen a bandwagon they didn't like. Like lemmings.
edit: And for what it's worth, with all of the talent that has come up in Edmonton over the last 25 years, we've never had a Calder winner. Kind of crazy when you think of it. It'd be a nice change of pace.
edit 2: I can't wait for my team to start winning but at the same time it's almost like having a favorite band that has been making music you like for 10 years put out a hit single. My formative years as an Oilers fan are punctuated with names like Kevin Todd. Aka, The Todder. I resent pretty much everyone who has only been a fan for the last 5 years or so. The hopeless 90s is what turned fans into men.

The Oilers of the 90s is the hockey I grew up watching, the kind of hockey I adore. Guys going out and no matter how talented they are just working their asses off, thats how hockey is supposed to be played.
Growing up Smyth has always been my role model, I cried more when we traded him than when I broke up with my first girlfriend... enough said.
