I keep telling myself that I will handicap myself with either only playing pistols or not going in as point man but that never happens because I hate the fact that I might lose... Or let my friends down. Sorry guys, I smurf ^^ I could easily be in the minority with this but smurfs aren't even close to the problem with matchmaking. If a guy wants to play with his lower-level friend, I don't see a problem with it at all as the better player is going to rank up faster regardless. Hackers are the problem. If a smurf beats me straight up, that's fine, he's a better player. It sucks but he's gonna be ranked much higher soon so it doesn't really matter. I can handle losing to a better player, but I'm not a fan of losing to someone who cheats.

So you queue into a game and there's a guy who pistol aces you. Alright, what a god. He ends up dropping a 50 bomb and you lose 16-2. Well that was depressing, you barely got to play. If he's a smurf, well he'll be in his proper division after he repeats this process for quite a few more games. If he's a hacker he'll proceed to do this for several games before he gets found out and VACed. On a game by game basis there's really not much difference between a smurf playing in a division far lower than his actual skill level and a hacker who's cheating on just about every round. One of them is absolutely deserving of getting his account banned and forced to pay more money if he wants to keep up these shenanigans, while the other could just be playing with some real life friends, or has no friends so he just wants to feel a God complex. Both of them can completely ruin a game for 9 other people, and if this is the problem we're trying to fix then both of them ARE the problem. Now I don't think of it like that, I think smurfing should be allowed and cheating obviously shouldn't, but I definitely can agree smurfing creates a lot of similar problems that hacking does.

Interesting question for sure. I mean, I've gotten irritated in the past when a smurf/stack of smurfs shows up and the game gets really lopsided, but at the same time, this whole idea that we should have all these boundaries in place to ensure that people only play with people "of their skill level" is kind of a novelty in the grand scheme of things. Maybe it comes from the fact that, thanks to the magic of the internet and automated matchmaking, we don't know who we're playing with, we can't regulate the teams the way we might a pickup game of basketball. Makes me think back to the ol' BW iCCup system and wonder if that wasn't a better way of doing things. Edit: not that I have too much experience with that, just thinking about how you could at least see who you were going to play with before you committed to a match.

Well you could still tank your rating / buy a new account if the MMR (or whatever term would be used) was visible, but I see what you are saying. I personally have less fun, but you're right on with the baseball analogy. They are just better, but it still takes the fun out.

And every chance he got, he'd advertise his boosting business. And about this: [If a smurf beats me straight up, that's fine, he's a better player. It sucks but he's gonna be ranked much higher soon so it doesn't really matter.] Disagree because he'll get higher than where he wants his smurf to be and just kind of decide to throw games randomly, which becomes an issue for the four on his team when he does. I've seen it happen plenty of times in MM.

I say this because I was thinking the same thing and this was the conclusion I came to for myself.

Playing on 144 or 120Hz doesn't help you getting better at the game. It just runs smoother on more Hertz. But keep in mind that you're fps have to be at least as high as you're monitors' Hertz to benefit from it. I actually find 144Hz on Windows and everyday surfing quite more impressive than in CS.

You are right in the sense that it doesn't "help someone get better", but it definitely helps you enjoy the game, and it will make getting kills in some situations easier. If you have the money, I'd recommend buying a 144hz monitor (the cheapest benq can be found around 250/300 euros, and are good). You end up forgetting how great it is when you play on it daily, but when you go back to 60hz you realize that it's actually awesome :D

Most reports from people who go from 60 to 120/144 is that the most benefit comes from sudden camera movement (a la flickshots or spins) since the screen wont be blurry and you wont over/under shoot your movement as much as a result and have better aim. But really they offer just as much improvement as a mechanical keyboard or gaming mouse/mousemat, there are small advantages / benefits sure, but its 90% about the feel of it and there is not a need for them until the absolute highest echelon of play.

Competitive experience so far has been pretty good. Yeah there are always random afk/ragers but I've found it's actually a pretty pleasant community so far in my climb. ~30 wins and Gold Nova 2 right now, not sure if that's reasonable or not but it's way more fun than the game I'm actually throwing myself at for climbing. All in all really fun game, glad I started watching some streams and stuff + bought the game a couple months back ^_^

You're fine using the "old" one, but once you've switched you never want to go back.

It was funny at first seeing them players being overly aggressive for show but when NBK bought a Negev on round 3 or 4 it got pretty fucking dumb, especially since they lost.
