Angry Birds and QWOP fit into that criteria). Obviously CS is not an iphone game, but it does get highlighted because of those aspects you'd mentioned which are present in other games. So why specifically CS? Is it because it was the first FPS game played at a real competitive level? Does nostalgia keep the fanbase around? I'm not trying to say "I hate CS" or that "it's a shit game" or anything, I'm just curious as to why it got so popular, despite the fact that the elements you've listed are not unique to CS. It just seems to me like a lot of the justification for loving CS comes from the fact that it isn't a traditional CODish shooter. But liking a game because it is not another game is not a reason to like a game, is it? I dunno, maybe I'm being too confusing... but I am also confused. Something about the game from the get go really just drew people in. It was addicting, even for lower level players. That's not something that's easily explicable, but the fact remains that it's just a damn fun and solid game that people don't mind playing over and over, for years and years, even when the graphics have come to be outdated, and it's come to be no longer ahead of its time.

But those of you arguing about realism, or graphics, or battlefield/call of duty elements simply don't really understand what made counter-strike 1.6 such a legendary game in the first place. Competitive Counterstrike players have no interest in realism, and could honestly care less about graphics if they come at the cost of gameplay. CS 1.6 had the greatest gameplay of any FPS in history, excluding quake which could be put on the same tier. The minute any realism elements are added to the game, is the minute this game dies off the gaming scene forever. If that is your thing, please divert your attention away from counterstrike and seek out battlefield or some other casual fps, this is for hardcore competitive esports play, which realism and casual dumbing down has no place.

I played it a little bit when it first came out, and it was OK for its time considering what was out there. But I found the jumping and shooting physics to be a little embellished or unrealistic for my tastes, so I left it at that. But now everyone who plays CS still swears up and down that it's the best game out there. Even by today's standards, which really struck me as odd, considering it's running off graphics from way back and an outdated game engine. I just want to know, why people are still so committed to CS? Why do you find it so fun? I can't see the appeal... Graphics have nothing to do with it. It's about gameplay and nostalgia. It's like me going to some football player who's been playing the game most of his life, and telling him that I find it odd that the game is still played on grass and that something as simple as kicking a ball into a net is so popular. Chances are, you didn't like the game then, you don't like it now, and you'll probably never like it. I'm curious what your computer game tastes are.

I understand your position, but I still find a real danger in catering to the casual community, simply based on valve's pretty horrible track record in regards to CS. I doubt you need a history lesson on the game, but valve has a lengthy history of over-accommodating to the casuals, and basically only that. Most of the major updates to the game over the course of the decade or so 1.6 was in it's hay-day, were complete destructions to the core of the game, so you can imagine most of our distaste in anything other than a strict, competitively focused development. I really do hope, and am very optimistic that the casuals can find joy in pubbing a superior competitive game, in whatever skill level they find comfortable. Without the need for these things, I mean plenty of casual games already have them and they are abundant. Part of the draw of CS is the steep skill curve and the difficulty of the game. This should stay the same as much so as possible, adding tracers to your shots will not benefit this. I want EVERYONE, regardless of skill level, to truly enjoy the game, but I think when you start adding things aimed at the wrong target audience, it's a slippery slope, and valve havn't shown that they know where that boundary begins and where it ends.
