There are various mechanics that help scale poison, such as ascendancy/gear specific things, duration scaling and wither (even when the applying hit is not fully chaos based). And afaik Toxic Rain is generally used for its flat DoT aspect, not poison, much like Caustic Arrow.

Toxic rain is Chaos dot, you don't want any poison nodes on a TR build.

If you want to scale poison with a bow, I recommend scourge arrow. After some inversion it clears whole screens with the pathfinder poison prolif.

With Toxic Rain / Caustic Arrow you scale directly the Chaos DoT.

Yeah but, none of that is specifically unique to poison. I have currently this build in front of me:

https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2714125

it does according to PoB, 3:1poison to hit damage and combined 23m dps. This is achieved by getting 723% boost by increased and 1194 more damage. If the base damage of the hit of the blade is 100 damage that build does 523 damage with a hit and 1917 damage with the poison. However, it then has to take 20% of that damage, as only one fifth of the base damage is actually used. If the 1817% damage multiplier would be simply applied to the hit of the blade vortex, the damage would be far greater. Are there simply so many more ways to scale poison damage effectively compared to in this case physical spell damage that this makes sense?

I decided to give this league ago. It has been a while since I last played. Betrayel was my last league to be exact. Since I had a large gap before Betrayel as well, the course of the story still feels very new/fresh to me. I probably have to look up a guide again for the atlas once I reach maps. I remember the mechanics gave me a headache last time and I can't remember much of it. -.- At least I decided to play softcore this time so I don't have to worry too much about dying - which is good because I already died once to a random trap in a labyrinth. So rusty...

Was talking about atlas completion in guild chat; posting a clearer explanation of what I'm talking about here. This is basically the strategy laid out in this guide, but that thread is so wordy that I found it hard to follow, even though it's all correct.

Here's what I'm doing:

  • 1. Do white maps aimlessly to get a few completions for the bonus and a decent white map pool. During this stage you don't care about which ones you're completing; having white map completions won't cause you problems later, because we're going to be using watchstones to prevent bad maps from cluttering up the drop pool.
  • 2. Once you have enough white maps that you have several from the same corner region, grab those maps and do them one after another. This should spawn your first Conqueror. Run it and get your first Watchstone. Socket this Watchstone in one of the interior regions. It doesn't really matter which one, as long as you have a couple of map completions for that region so the maps there can drop.
  • 3. Do the same for each of the other three corners, fighting the second through fourth Conquerors. Bank their Watchstones, don't socket them in a region. During this time, you should be getting a few drops of maps in the region where you have one Watchstone. You'll use these next.
  • 4. Socket two of your banked Watchstones in a different interior region.
  • 5. Run maps from the region that has one Watchstone, to spawn your fifth through eighth Conquerors (you should already have these maps because they were dropping during steps 2-3). During this time, you should be getting map drops for the region where you have two Watchstones socketed, but not anywhere else (because nowhere else has enough Watchstones socketed to drop maps of that tier).
  • 6. Now that you're done with the first interior region, unsocket its Watchstone, so that it no longer competes on the drop table. Socket three of your banked Watchstones into the third interior region (one where you haven't done any Conquerors yet).
  • 7. Run maps from the region that has two Watchstones, to spawn your ninth through twelfth Conquerors (you should already have these maps because they were dropping during step 5). While you're doing this, you should get map drops from the region with three Watchstones socketed.
  • 8. Unsocket the two Watchstones from the region you just finished, and socket four of your banked Watchstones into the last interior region where you haven't fought the Conquerors.
  • 9. Run maps from the region with three Watchstones, spawning your thirteenth through sixteenth Conquerors, and getting map drops for the last interior region.
  • 10. Unsocket the three Watchstones from the region you just finished, and socket four Watchstones into any corner region.
  • 11. Run the maps from the final interior region, spawning your seventeenth through twentieth Conquerors, and getting map drops for the corner region you just socketed.
  • 12. You now have 20 Watchstones, meeting the requirements to fight Sirus for the first time. Do the Awakener fight. After this point, Conqueror spawns are no longer guaranteed in eligible regions, so it'll take longer to spawn the remaining ones.
  • 13. Unsocket the four Watchstones from the final interior region, and socket them into a second corner region.
  • 14+. Run maps in a corner region. When you finish a corner region (have fought all four Conquerors there), unsocket its Watchstones and move them to a different corner region which you haven't finished yet. Repeat until you've done all four corners. Then socket all your Watchstones everywhere (for max Awakener level), or in regions where you like the maps (less Awakener level but don't have to run maps you don't like), and farm at will.

...aaaaand now I'm almost as wordy as the guide I started from.

The point of this whole rigmarole is that at any time after your first four Conqueror fights, the only valid drop options for maps at or slightly higher than the tier you're running are the region you're currently running, or the region you'll be running next, since everywhere else on the Atlas is nothing but white maps because you don't have any Watchstones socketed there. This makes it way more likely that you'll get the map drops you need (or you're about to need) as you go along, instead of having to buy maps to do progression.

https://tl.net/forum/postmessage.php?quote=32194&topic_id=250781

So my progression has been very slow due to time limitation but I have made my way into maps, killed my first couple conquerers. I actually got a question about point 3. I socketed my first Watchstone in the interior region (I hope, it's Lex Proxima) which made all the maps level up as they should. However, the drop limitations still apply so if I do maps of other regions I will most likely not get any maps of Lex Proxima because their level is above what can drop. Am I doing it wrong?

Another thing that seems to be missing recently is the lab preruns. I have done 4 in early maps but haven't encountered any of the final two over the last 50 maps or so. I kind of want to do the Eternal Lab to get my final 2 points.

Heists have been weird so far. I only did a handful of normal ones, which seemed easy, as well as all the story ones I found. The last 4 story ones I got randomly one shot on my way out. I didn't even see what did it in any of the cases. Good I play SC this time but all the loot got lost...

Aside from that I have to say the leveling experience is very smooth now with 10 acts. The game is so rich as well with all the previous league stuff, masters, Heists etc. It really is a different game and the long pause really hits you in the face with how much the game has grown.

The setup doesn't make your lower tier maps useful, it just ensures that more of the maps you receive will be for the region you want to run next. If you have one watchstone and get a tier 6 or 7 map drop it is guaranteed to be for Lex Promina with that socketing strategy. If it's a tier 4 or 5 then it could be in another region as well since those also have that tier, but this is impossible to avoid because there is always overlap. You're maximizing the amount of Lex Promina drops you get with the strategy.

If you skip ahead to the next step it may make more sense. Socket two watchstones into Tirn's End. Now all of your tier 8-10 drops will be in Tirn's End. This one is nice because there is no overlap.

The idea that is as you run maps in the outer regions to spawn each conquerer once you occasionally get a map for the socketed inner region. This is also where it helps to try and do as many different maps as you can so you can get their Bonus, which gives you more chance to get a higher level map.

You can still only get map drops from stuff you've cleared or adjacent so keep an eye on your Zana as well to open up everything.

Oki, thanks a lot for clearing that up. I have had a handful of map drops of Lex Promina T4-T6 now. I guess I just got a bit unlucky before. So far it looks like the push for the next 2 conquerers will be slow so by the time I get to them I should hopefully have enough of a higher tier map pool.

This changed in 3.0. Ailments are no longer based on the scaled damage of the hit that inflicts them. Instead, they're based on the base damage of that hit, scaled by appropriate modifiers (e.g., Poison is scaled by Chaos damage, DoT, Ailment damage, etc.).

This means modifiers that apply to both the hit and ailment portions don't apply twice when calculating ailment damage - instead, they apply independently to the hit's base damage when calculating the hit damage and the ailment damage, which prevents quadratic scaling like we had pre-3.0.

Poison Blade Vortex Assasin
Essense Drain / Contagion
Toxic Rain / Casutic Arrow Tricksters
Carrion Golem Elementalist (Switching to necromancer in lategame)
Saboteurs and mines are still fine (Ball Lightning, Toxic Rain, etc.)
Most minion builds are still fine (Spectres, Zombies,DomBlow, etc.)
For melee Earthshatter was more popular than Cyclone at the beginning of the league.

But to be honest, the league is very advanced and a lot of items are cheap now, so probably you could play wathever you want.

New events coming up. I'm pretty excited about endless delve, should allow for some unique build opportunities. Though it may get dull doing only delve for a week; I'll probably stop at 85 or 90.

I probably won't be pushing too hard, but I'll try to play each event. I'm curious how competitive the Hardcore ladder will be - previously getting Top 5 was achievable even only pushing modest hours, since the best HC players tend to flock towards SSF.

Yeah the endless delve thing sounds really unique compared to anything they've done before. Eager to check it out for that reason alone. How they'll implement gems and other vendors, ascending, etc. Could be really cool.

Not compared to anything they have done before, but yeah. They have done Descent (Champion) races and Endless Ledge back in the days which were pretty innovative. Also the Battle Royale was pretty different as well.

The problem with playing endless delve is that it isn't permanent and I'll have to go back to the campaign startup boring grind next league.

I'm kind of relieved that they don't end Heist early. I like the league mechanic and was planning to continue for at least a few week. Endless Delve looks like something I would try though. It's the most fun mechanic out of all the new masters imho.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank A Soo for the Atlas guide. That really helped a lot. Due to time constraints my progress was slow and at times I had to grind an area a lot longer beyond spawning all the conquerers because I just didn't get any map drops of the next area. Especially at step 9 it took forever to get those T14 maps to drop. Maybe I'll be able to try Sirus for the first time, who knows... I'll be honest though, I would never try all this shit in HC. Like, I didn't die to any of the conquerers but I had some sketchy situations (also died quite a bit elsewhere in high level maps and Heists...). Part of that is my char, which was advertised as "tanky" with great clear and good for bosses without gear. Well, the latter two are correct but the amount of times I just got one-shot... I feel like "tanky" in standard means that 1 white mob can't hit you for more than 50% of your hit points... Hell, even my second char I built myself, after I got a bit of a grip again, feels a lot less fragile. And I didn't really build on many defenses or gave it a huge life pool like I would in HC. Just the basic minimum. Anyways, I'm enjoying the league so thanks again and sorry for the rant...

Dang wasn't around for those first two. 2013-2014? It's been a long ass time. Would really like to see stuff like this more often. Very simple, very unusual, short duration. Can't be too much dev time involved. I know they're doing these to tide people over since 3.13 got delayed a month but I wonder if they'd lead to enough temporary resurge in interest to warrant a 4-month dev cycle with more flavor stuff in between, rather than the 3 month engine they've been stretched pretty thin on lately.

Well those races were much shorter back then. Races lasted between 12 minutes and 4 hours max. Unless they did longer versions after I left, Endless Ledge and Decent Champions Races were in that range as well. I imagine Decent Champions actually took a bit of dev time.

Yeah reading a bit more it sounded more involved than I expected. I was thinking more like what they could be onto if this Delve thing goes well, clever use of assets that are already there just to provide a really unique limited-time experience for all types of players. Even stuff like mayhem/flashback are fun but at they're core it's still "the same thing" just turned up to 11. Still story acts to get through, still atlas to fill out, etc. Infinite delve is much more unique..
