I would hook you up, but I already gave my 2 keys away, I'm sorry!

PoE is more like Diablo 2 than Diablo 3
it also has some interesting ideas and gameplay mechanics that make it more than a D2 clone
for example, PoE has a crafting system where you can potentially take a white item, turn it into a rare, reroll sockets, reroll socket links, reroll mods, add a mod, and remove mods.
so if you remember Charsi's Imbue quest, it's like that except you can do it repeatedly and there's customization as long as you have the items to do it.
PoE's socket system and passive skill system opens the potential for many different types of builds and play styles.
in PoE, some items can potentially have up to 6 sockets. these sockets can also all be linked with each other allowing for an active skill to be augmented by support skills that can boost crit, increase item find, increase magic find, chain an attack, fork an attack, increase AoE, etc.
PoE's passive skill tree is shared by all classes except each class has a different starting point within the tree. so if you wanted to potentially take a Marauder (STR class) and make your way to the Witch (INT class) section of the skill tree, you have to freedom to do so
it might not be the best skill point use, but the choice is yours to make and it could actually be a viable build.
PoE's HC just places you into SC if you die. SC and HC shared stash is separate.
PoE has limited time duration events which have ranged from hours to a week so far where players can attain rewards if they reach a milestone or are at a certain rank compared to other players once the event ends
PoE may end up having a cut throat league where PvP is always enabled and random players can join in on other player's instances to try to kill them. upon death, any loot within a player's inventory is dropped. equipped loot is retained by the dead player and the player is returned to town. killing other players rewards XP and dieing incurs a decrease in XP.
PoE's loot system is limited time duration by name and once that time expires, it's FFA for anyone to pick up

Well you didn't answer his question. Nothing makes PoE stand out from no story/item grind, actually PoE has even less story and more item grind. But that is how people who play these games like it.

Would appreciate a key for this if anyone has to spare. Game looks very promising.

Uh, every single thing udgnim listed is what makes PoE different (maybe better) than other games. Item grind in TL2 was too easy imo, and the RMAH along with the min/max rolls just killed D3's item grind.

He specifically mentioned story and item grind which PoE is standard in. If someone doesn't like apples he don't care about different brand of apples.

The guy's question was basically "is there a game in this genre that's not in this genre?"

I have been playing this game very casually for about 2-3 weeks and gotten a char to level 50, and I love it.
The graphics feels dated and the gameplay seems slow and clunky the first 10-15 levels. Other than that, I love everything about it.
The way they handle currency is nothing short of genius. Combine it with the crafting / item progression system and have the only "real" currency sink I have seen in a game. This is going to make the barter economy very interesting IMO. Really looking forward to how this will pan out.

this game is plain and simple awesome. the skilltree alone and possibilities u have. jeez. i was theorycrafting for like hours yesterday xD and good god i had more fun than i ever had i d3.

I have to disagree. I can very easily imagine a game in the ARPG genre with little focus on item grinding and more focus on story.
Actually... the two XBox Baldur's Gate games might be just that. They were hated by the BG community basically, but I liked them.

Open beta starts on 23rd January, which is when final character swipe will happen.

This means that anyone can play, without keys, right?

I was thinking more in terms of ARPGs that give you hundreds of hours of gameplay. I don't think there's one in existence with a ton of replay value that doesn't get repetitive at some point. If you can think up of one I'd definitely be interested in trying it out.

I got a spare key, if anyone wants to play PM me. Edit: It is gone
