I think the lock issue in PoE is part of their system of predicting what is going to happen. The same system also causes desync all the time. I hope they find a way to fix this. They like to do ingame animations to cover for that work the system is doing at that time.

I am sure most of you don't know that each time enemies stop and do some taunt animation they are actually being synced with server. Taunt is only there so they don't just stand there looking stupid.

Note that better sync generally means more rubber-banding, easier cheating or certain game systems being changed.

For example, in Diablo 3 they removed the ability to miss, removed the ability to be stunned, made all attacks work regardless of range, removed the ability for monsters to block you on the server, etc.

Personally, I dont mind that PoE has no animation canceling.

In terms of graphics and sound effects, I certainly agree. But they could improve the feel of the combat system with a couple of inexpensive tweaks a lot I think.

E.g. there's a noticable delay between your input and what actually happens on the screen. For example, when you hit something, your character gets stuck in this mode where he can't do anything else until his animation finishes (at least that's how it was 3 months ago). Then there's the fact that the sound effects and the animations are not synchronized well, which confuses your brain and defeats force-feedback. D3 has this exact same thing as well, but the lock-time is just much, much shorter. I think they could reduce this lock time in PoE as well and it would feel a lot better.

Im not sure but maybe its connected to netcode, netcode is ATM the most hot issue with PoE.

What i perceived myself is even slight latency difference gives a very noticeable difference, 120 latency vs 80 latency for example is noticeable, also picking up items/opening chests give a slight delay sometimes i don't even need to check the latency graph to know. It also affects the delay when mob is getting hit which creates a feel of "disconnect" in experience.

I dont exatcly know how ARPGs work from inside, i could say more about FPS like CS. CS 1.6 and Source for example use lag and interpolation compensation mechanics, and for FPS its double edged sword as even if the game looks smoother on higher latencies while using it, it is "lying" to you, which made the whole movement few years ago in 1.6 community on enforcing certain settings that give you an almost correct position of your opponent but foregoing some smootheness.

I don't know heck about ARPGs in that regard but i would love to see how the game feels in 0 latency to properly judge. What i have the gripe for is when you reach certain speed attacks, certain "powerful" animations became trivial and feel "weak"(as they are sped up).

D3 is not really perfect, it may be perfect in animation framing but what these animation represent, sometimes ruins the experience to me. Sanctuary is not a place for WoW overacted animations. Just look at monk...

The combat system is clunky, badly animated and has no fluency to it at all. There's no force feedback when you hit anything, the graphical effects are not very good, and the sound effects are pretty bad as well.

It's a major issue, yes. However, it does fix itself with high move and attack speed. That's what I'm worried about for this game, is that first impressions is going to turn off the majority if people who will try it, because it takes time for the game to become great.

The animation lock is frustrating to play with, as kiting is almost non-existent. You mostly fire 1 shot and then realize the guy's already up in your face cause it took you so long. Aside from that this game suffers like any other loot driven ARPG where the loot you're picking up, no matter the rarity, is mostly useless for you. The lack of a real economy at low levels also makes trading rather awkward.

This feels like another one of those games that boasts a very impressive niche feature, and then kind of failed to make a good game around that concept. Although I am enjoying my time with it, I hope they do some serious tweaking of the game mechanics/engine in the OB.

I'm really enjoying this game so far, my friend let me use his account after he donated 10 to get instant access. Probably gonna just pay the 10 myself, and I suggest anyone wanting to try it probably just do that, it's very fun and has a lot of potential.

damn this game is great. I played the Beta way back when act 2 way just released. Just did the 3hour turbo event(joined with only an hour left). Such a nice change of pace compared to D3


I think my HC caster templar will go far when I play later on

Really want to get into this game, but I just cant'.... Every now and then I update it again, play a character to level 5 or something, look at the skill tree, become absolutely overwhelmed by it, can't decide what to spec into fearing to fuck up the whole character and close the game again.

I know the deep skill tree is like the bestestest feature of the game but for me it's just way too much. x_x

Look at the PoE forums and find a build that intrigues you. Then just copy their skill tree as you go and if you find you need to tweak things then do it. You'll never get it right your first time, so just don't worry too much about it.

I feel ya, just remember that (with some effort) you can reskill later on. So it's actually not that bad.

lol dont worry about it man. Trust me everyone thinks that the first time but just play and you will be exposed to it as you go on. I've played 3char's to 20's and it starts out the same way every time but its exposing me to other areas and im learning as I go.

It's a really fun game and its easy to party with ppl.

On a side note: Did anyone play in the race today and want to share their experience ? I was going to party with a few ppl i've met in game and do it but I had to go :/

what do you want to know about the races? I havent raced in a while these days now with finals and waiting for open beta etc, but I have completed quiet a few races. They are all mostly TURBO(monsters attack/cast/move 60% faster compared to normal races) solo HC races, and everytime I have done them I was always top 1-3 maraduer (The class I play for races) and have won a couple of demi gods. My experience in party races is limited because I prefer not to do it as a party of 6 has a huge advantage compared to a solo player (obviously), the 1-2 times I have done party races with my friend as a party of 2 only we still managed to finish top 1-3 of our respective class. At the moment if you are a solid solo player you can probably solo your way to top 5 of your class in a party race as the competition for races atm is just not that big since its the beta,

I cant wait to try the upcoming cutthroat events soon though they havent had one of these since August last time I remember.

edit: I would like to mention I prefer TURBO races pretty much exclusively its much more interesting compared to the normal races that feels very stale to me, because in TURBO even good players can die depending on their risky play style which makes it exciting as you want to take risks but also play safe at the same time.

And you have nothing to lose ... it is closed beta. You would be really suprised how simpler this tree starts to look after a week, and then you start having fun with experimenting or building classes.

Just got into this a few days ago. This is surprisingly fun. Not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting D2 honestly but I got something so much deeper, more difficult, and because of that more rewarding. Awesome stuff!

Oh man these races sound like so much fun.. I cant wait to take part in them!!

This game is like D2 but way improved and more complex, creative and strategic. There's some minor problems but its beta and these guys are offering this game for free so profits arent as huge as they should be for a game of this caliber.

Also you can check the PoE Website for the Class Tree, you can Select your Class and start Skilling and checking what you can do. You can even search for specific stats, thats probably the smart thing to do... dont just check whats available, check what you want and look for it, see where it is and what you need to get it, what Path is smarter / faster etc....
