Imagine if in D3 your average 2H has like 1.2 APS while the faster weapons were around 1.8 APS, making the average 1H like 1.5 APS (about as high as it gets as is). On top of these you could use your IAS to make it even better. Also if base movement speed was 15-20% higher I think these games would be immensely more fun
I often opt to not use 2H in ARPG's even if it would be statistically better for me as I hate being so sluggish. It's a tradeoff really.
My templar who has very low mana opts for 2H slow weapons with higher damage per hit since faster attacks drain more mana.
And with my ranger I love that you need to get high lvl gems / gear to actually obtain sick IAS.

Not at all, open beta will be released with act 3 and pvp according to what theyve said, but they made it very clear the game will still be 'in development' and they have plans for years of new features and content to add.

Ended up buying a key last night to try out the game more (I didn't get much play time in the last open beta) and i currently have a level 16-17 or so duelist. So far I have two questions:
1. Is there any way to get in touch with other TL members playing the game to group up? The system does not seem to encourage grouping with random people.
2. In both D3 and the old Titan Quest (only other games of this genre I played, aside maybe 2-3 hours of D2) you could force stand still as a melee and keep attacking and the character would still damage enemies in front of you that are in weapon range without needing to mouse over them specifically. Here that does not seem to happen, but it may be because it can take 1-2 seconds to kill trash and monster collision seems low, so it takes many to surround you. Can anyone with higher level characters confirm or deny this?
Also kiting with a ranged class seems almost impossible, but as far as I have read it's just a matter of attack/cast speed right?

1. GIve the global chat a try, then add them as friends. Then you see them online even if they go offline.
2. Haven't played D3, and can barely remember Titan Quest. But in both D2 and this game you can hold down shift and stear with your mouse the direction you want to attack when standing still.
And kiting with ranged gets much easier later in the game with many boots with extra movespeed + talents that increase movespeed, phase run, and most important, the slow curse that you can apply infinite of.
EDIT: Should probably add for the kiting part that the talent that gives you slight knockback on crit is a huge waste. They might have changed it a bit since i last played this game on higher levels, but crit has always been really bad outside of some troll wand builds.

2. This is a feature that is on their to do list. The problem is that weapons have low range and if you hold shift and try to melee attack you will often not be in range of enemies.

Shift-clicking with melee weapons is (was?) buggy, and I don't think they're done fixing it yet. It works really well with skills like Ground Slam, and obviously ranged weapons, but for regular attacks and melee skills, I think you can't use it reliably yet.
As for kiting, that's correct. You use kiting in later levels not as a means to increase the time you have to mow down targets, but more as a positional tool so that your AoE hits more effectively. You can start walking only when you could start attacking again, there's no stutter stepping, as they consider that to be somewhat broken. You can kite slower monsters, and slow down/knockback faster monsters, but you can't straight up kite everything.
That said, ranged is already immensely more powerful than melee at lower levels, and I'd suggest using a bow or at least carrying one for any duelist/ranger/shadow until at least level 20, where your melee build starts coming along, fast monsters are common, and you have a way of dealing with cold/freeze.

There is a Board in both camps where you can find public groups and when I have tried it, there has usuaiiy been at least a few parties to meet and greet people in. Obviously grouping will be easier when more people are in the game. Tbh. I think it is only a question of time before enough people play the game.
I am not sure about the stand still option, You can hold down shift and you will attack from your position. Problem is that holding down shift will not stop an already issued move-command. Attacking while under a move-command will, however, stop the movement. IIRC the shift overwriting the move-command is something they are looking at doing.
Kiting with a ranged class is indeed not that easy, but it is plenty doable. You just have to remember that attack stops every other action, move is next in line and attack from position is low priority meaning: To kite you really need an enemy-slowing skill, you need to hit the enemy with that, move away from the enemy and attack the enemy from your new position. If you are not exact enough at clicking the monsters, you can use shift to hold position while attacking after moving. Most likely you should be using an ability to attack with, no matter what, which breaks move-command anyway, but shift is sometimes worth using , just to avoid sloppy target-clicking.
Edit: And that is a good number of responses in very little time especially given how slow activity in this thread is atm!

So I've been checking out some PoE videos(waiting for 1.0.5 in D3 and being kinda turned off by the cartoonish style of Tochlight 2) and I was wondering if *right now* (i.e. before the open beta) the only way to get in is to buy one of the beta packages they offer at their website? Or are there still some free beta keys floating around?

Theoretically you can sign on site and pray that you will get picked, but im not sure if its random or its by date of creation. if it goes chronologically, you won't make it. So yes you need to pay 10$ at least for beta, or beg.
About kiting and battle mechanics, the game seems slow on the beginning but when you run into +speed passives and +speed gear and gem skills it makes the game fast, also remember to pick Phase Run its basically skill everyone uses who play this game :p
Speed of both movement and attack is like dramatically different after even 20 levels and in endgame is even higher. Having chars with +3 attacks per second and faster projectiles (there is also this variable) is not uncommon in later game. And it affects your kiting abilities and battle mechanics.
The game revolves around gear, and your character creation. Its pretty fun a specially if you consider that classes besides cosmetics (look, animations) only differ with starting position on passive tree and stats they start with.
If i had to describe the game with 1 sentence i would say this games feels mediocre at the beginning, ok after some time, and one of the best later when you understand all the nuisances, whether its true or not i dont care i know this game is total reverse of D3 experience i had (quite good--->ok---->annoying).

It's worth it 10$ if you can pay.

I've watched a few developer interviews and the approach they are at is the right one to get the game we all (ARPG fans) expect. I just hope they won't ease up under the crying kid's pressure and the game stays on decent difficulty even when playing normal. My hat is down to the devs as they are doing great job with such a small resource. If you have the money I'd suggest buying beta access anyway just to support the devs.
Allright so i've bought the supporter pack and i am very satisfied even that i know chars will be deleted when open beta hits. Anyways i want to use this time to practice, so i won't be total noob in open beta. I have lvl 65 witch and finished one 3H hardcore race on level 18 (i know it is low but was my first one). I gotta say i really like the complexity of the game, you need to think all the time how to make your build and equipment. Then you find out you can get much better by switching something and so on. I would recommend it and it is better than D3 in my book. This game in BETA feels more finished than D3 will be in a year.

Maps are alot of fun just remember to do modded maps not plains or you get shit rewards, also ask around in chat about parties pooling maps together so you don't have to farm them up yourself.
