Biggest thing is it no longer counts as a hit, so you can't indefinitely sustain flasks anymore.

Ugh, I had a build all planned out and they buff the crap out of SRS..... I mean really GGG, did you not learn from blade vortex that reducing charges but making them more effective is a bad idea? Maybe will just level SRS and then swap to real build....

Also raider sounds way less awful now..

GG. Blade Flurry league here we come. The nerfs aren't close to what's necessary to prevent the skill from entirely outclassing every other melee skill, and perhaps even most skills in general.

0.664x base damage
1.6x attack speed
20% more damage per stage (so after 6 stages, it means each strike does on average either 1.6x or 1.5x dmg)
And an extra strike per stage after channeling - so 2x
So you have a skill which does, conservatively calculated, 3.1872x base damage. (It's a conservative calculation using 1.5x average, AND because it's possible that all the extra strikes do maximum damage rather than repeating the damage of the original strikes - which would make the average dmg per strike closer to 1.75x or higher.)
There's AoE nerfs in the patch notes - but even if blade flurry was single target (lol), it would outclass every single target skill that exists now.

Patch notes specifically mention cyclone benefiting from weapon range changes. I'm more and more sure spectral throw will also benefit.
SKT hwaiting! RIP TL, TiP

This isn't the reason you can't infinitely sustain flasks anymore. You can't sustain flasks anymore because there's now an internal cooldown on how often Surgeon's and similar mechanics can grant flask charges.

The Blade Vortex changes mean that each stack doesn't hit separately anymore, which means it generates many fewer crits than it used to. This would have made sustaining flasks with Surgeon's harder, but it doesn't matter for that anymore since the ICD on flask charge generation means any crit build is going to be critting fast enough to charge Surgeon's flasks as fast as the ICD will allow.

Aside from perma-flasks not working anymore, though, BV seems pretty much untouched. Some nerd has calculated that it ramps up slightly slower than before, but does more damage at max stacks. And, of course, it doesn't do on-crit things (like generate power charges) as fast as it used to. But now that CoC, Cospri's, and flask charges all have cooldowns, there aren't that many on-crit things you want to spam anymore anyway.

Flasks still king

Isn't the nerf to Surgeon's and similar mechanics huge enough to pretty much stomp flask-reliance into the ground? Like yeah it's still good to have a Vinktar's, but you don't have 100% uptime on it for bosses anymore at least.

I was already planning on levelling Flameblast totems, so now it's gonna be even more EZ-mode for me.

o lol tbh I completely read over the surgeon's change. Yeah that's a good change, however it's fine for me because I just like pathfinder flask effectiveness in general.

Path of Exile is an ARPG made by Grinding Gear Games, inspired by classic games like Diablo 2. Exiled to the dangerous and desolate Wraeclast, you struggle first to survive, then to conquer. PoE is perhaps the most complex and difficult ARPG around, but that depth makes it one of the most rewarding and fun ARPG experiences ever.

Path of Exile Wiki

Core Features

7 Classes, 19 Ascendencies, No Limits
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

PoE has 7 character classes, each representing some combination of the three core attributes: Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. Though each class resembles typical RPG archetypes like a Warrior or a Wizard, the game is designed so that every class can potentially do anything, if built correctly. For example, the Witch, who looks like a typical spellcaster, can be a potent bow character, an elemental sword wielder, or even a claw toting melee badass.

The Marauder
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Strength based. A proud warrior of the Karui, respectful towards the ancestors and tribal spirits of his people, and brutally merciless towards his enemies.

The Duelist
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Strength/Dexterity based. An inimitable swordsman of both great talent and charm, though his quick anger and haughty pride are what ultimately forced him into exile.

The Ranger
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Dexterity based. A huntress of the wild who has spurned human society, believing it to be wasteful and corrupt. A true believer in independence and the value of the natural world.

The Shadow
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Dexterity/Intelligence based. A silent assassin, a murderous artist, a flicker in the dark. The Shadow is a professional whose delight in killing sometimes goes beyond simply finishing the job.

The Witch
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Intelligence based. Persecuted, her family and village slaughtered, she got revenge using her strange abilities they so feared. Like the others, Wraeclast's secrets provide a place to learn and grow, though her interests border on disturbing.

The Templar
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Strength/Intelligence based. A true believer, the Templar is man of bravery and faith in a world where such ideals hardly exist. Driven by purpose, the Templar will stop at nothing to defeat the corruption that plagues the world.

The Scion
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

A master of all three attributes. A true prodigy, yet born to a noble family that saw her as nothing more than a tool. Exiled after killing her husband on their wedding night, Wraeclast will unlock her limitless potential. Must be discovered.

These characters are connected by the Passive Skill Tree, a massive thing that can be daunting at first.
+ Show Spoiler [Yep, that's the skill tree] +
[image loading]

Leveling or doing quests gives you skill points to allocate on this passive tree. Each class has a different starting area on the passive tree, but with enough points any class can take any passive skill, allowing a huge diversity of builds.

Each class also has Ascendency classes, which futher augment a character's abilities in thematic ways. For example, the Shadow can become the Assassin, increasing his critical damage output, a Saboteur, focusing on traps and mines, or the Trickster, a balanced character with bonuses to Energy Shield and Evasion. You can read more about Ascendancy here.

Where's the gold? Crafting, Itemization, and Skill Customization
+ Show Spoiler +
Currency
[image loading]

Like any ARPG, the game revolves around killing monsters for loot, then using that loot to build up your character, allowing you to take on bigger and better challenges. Unlike most other ARPGs, PoE doesn't have any singular currency type like gold or that is a general use for trades / wealth.

Instead, the game features various currency items that can be used to trade with other players, or consumed to craft stronger items. This allows PoE's great item design to shine; the game features a wide array of items and item affixs that can be modified to suit your needs.
+ Show Spoiler [A Famous Blade] +
[image loading]
Might not be obvious, but this item took an obscene amount of currency to craft, creating one of the most powerful and mirrored daggers ever.

Build Your Own Skills
[image loading]

In PoE, instead of learning active skills from a skill tree, skills are items called skill gems that you can socket into your gear. You can then socket and link support gems to them, which augment them in various ways. This ranges from something simple like Melee Physical Damage Support boosting a melee skill's damage, to effects like Chain Support which fundamentally affects a skill's base mechanics.

Endless Builds
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
The sum of all these mechanics allows one to make a huge variety of builds. The thrill of carefully studying game mechanics, planning everything out, then seeing a build you designed work out is amazing. The game rewards players who have greater skill and deeper game knowledge in a way that few other games can. The sheer variety of ways one can make a character gives PoE great replayability.

GGG releases a video series called Build of the Week, which showcases what the game can offer; definitely worth a watch if you're curious what is possible.
+ Show Spoiler [BotW S6E1] +

Frequent Content Updates, Leagues, & Developers Who Care
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

All of these game mechanics wouldn't matter if the game was lacking good content. Luckily Path of Exile has more than enough engaging gameplay, with a main storyline that progresses through 4 Acts and 3 Difficulties with tons of bosses, quests, and difficult encounters, culminating in an endgame with a crap ton of varied and difficult content.

Mapping, the main endgame activity (seen as some as the true beginning of the game), has you using maps to enter new zones that contain more difficult monsters, bosses, and more rewarding loot and exp. You can customize these maps using currency.
+ Show Spoiler [Map Crafting in Action] +
[image loading]

More rare monsters, OK that's not too bad

Ouch.

Support and Leagues
[image loading]
Perhaps most importantly, GGG releases new content in the form of Leagues every 3 months. These new leagues not only have a new ladder where everyone can have a fresh starting point, but always include some sort of significant content update.

Here's a video showcasing the Atlas of World expansion, which completely revamped the endgame mapping system and added 19 new bosses (with amazing loot to go along with it of course).
+ Show Spoiler [Atlas of Worlds Trailer] +

GGG, the best in the business
Not only does GGG release sizable content updates at least every 3 months, they also are constantly adding to the game, ranging from smaller mid-league updates of new skills and items, to performance fixes and upgrades. If you've ever heard of desync, an old problem plaguing the game, don't worry; GGG has fixed it and is committed to making the best ARPG possible.

I might be fanboying a bit here; GGG is not a perfect company and has made plenty of mistakes in the past. However, their amazing support (very helpful and quick customer service), their constant community interaction (appear on podcasts, post on reddit often, all hail Chris Wilson, etc.), and their fair business practices make them a great company to get behind.

Path of Exile is a ARPG that heavily resembles Diablo 1&2. The game is free to play and is not "pay2win" the only the item mall only sells things such as dance animations, weapon effects, special "helmets", and pets none of which help you in combat and are only for looks.

6 Classes are available in PoE.
The colors in the picture represent the three attributes red is Strength, blue is Intelligence, and green is Dexterity. The Witch fills the role of the Intelligence she is usually stocked with AOEs and summons. Marauder is the strength character usually built as a tank. Ranger fills the role of DPS with pure dexterity. Duelist is a hybrid of Strength and dexterity excels in dual wielding, and shield and sword/axe. The Templar is the Strength/Intelligence hybrid usually who often excels as a summoner or a tank-mage. The final class is the Shadow he is a sadistic butcher which wields claws and daggers he also often carries traps.

The skill gem system is this is confusing for most players at first so I will give you a quick run-down of how it works. You will be awarded skill gems through the means of quests, drops, and trading. These gems are the colors of the 3 attributes, and will be inserted into your equipment. You insert them into slots of the same color example: Fireball is a intelligence gem so you must have x amount of intelligence to equip it and a blue socket on your gear. You can remove and change them as you please they do not get destroyed upon removal which you do by simply right clicking the gem. As you kill mobs and gain experience so will your gems, and they will all get equal XP no matter how many you have equipped. You can use your skills by the hotkeys right mouse, middle mouse, and keys Q-T. Then you have support gems which you equip to linked slots + Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
as you can see in this picture the sword has a strength and 2 dexterity slots linked so if you put for example frenzy and milti-arrow in the green slots and an increased fire damage support gem in the red slot the powers from the support gem are added to multi-arrow and frenzy. You can have multiple support gems on your skills but you cannot have 2 of the same type.

The passive tree which is what you spend your skill points from leveling up and completing quests on is quite intimidating at first. It is huge to be blunt about it. There are so many options that you can choose for your character in here. Where you start on this tree is based on your class as in the Witch starts where the intelligence and spell damage nodes are and Marauder around health and armor nodes. I’m not going to say much about the skill tree as there is way too much to cover. However follow this link for a look at the skill tree and what it contains! Even make a test build in it.

Monsters in this game are handled in four ways, normal, blues, rares, and bosses you will see the mods they have under their names. The normal ones are your basic monster that have no special powers until the later difficulties which you get by completing all the acts they will get resistances to things such as Fire, cold, and physical* and maybe immunities in the higher difficulties(I’m not sure haven’t reached them). Then you have your blues also called magic these are pretty much the same as normal except they have a mod on them which vary from Increased damage, regenerates life, gains frenzy charge on hit, and even the rare drops extra loot known as the ‘wealth’ mod. Blues usually come in small groups of 2-4. Rares are the ones you need to look out for not only do they have mods just like blues but they can have an aura which affects all monsters around it in a positive way or affects you in a negative way, some of these are allies cannot die, resists all, and the feared reflect physical damage or elemental damage killing these net you the best loot. Note however only 20% of what you hit with will be reflected back at you.

A monster sporting the reflect physical damage aura.

This guys a bad-ass

Bosses are usually alone and difficult to bring down, They have unique abilities and mods you are unable to see and are also able to cast spells that can be devastating. After you kill a boss you will be awarded some loot and often times you will also find a loot chest in the room after the boss.

Buying and selling is done in orbs, and items. It is difficult to get used to and I still haven’t got the hang of it. The orbs most used in trading are Chaos, Regal, Alchemy, Blessed, Gemcutter’s, and jewelers. This however isn’t even half of the orbs. List of Orbs

Items come in four forms which are, normal, magic, rare, and unique. These items are based off of a Prefix and Suffix mods system in which you can see by their names for example: Smoldering sword of Plunder is a sword that gives added fire damage and item rarity. Normals are the color white and are usually junk but with the right amount of sockets or quality% it can be worth it to pick it up whites are the only ones that do not have to be identified. Magic are blue you are unable to equip them until they are identified with a scroll of identify they contain 1-2 mods. Rares the yellow ones these are the ones you are looking for the most they have the best mods of all the items and are what your character will be mostly wearing at the end game. Uniques are the color brown* these are the rarest items to find and can be powerful especially at low levels. Currently there are 55 unique items in the game and more are being added these items have set attributes and are great for using with a specific build.

PvP is an important subject for a lot of people and in Path of Exile the PvP isn’t released yet however it does sound great. There will be a mode called Cutthroat in which anyone can join your instance and kill you at any time. There will be Cutthroat tournaments in the future in which everyone starts at level one and fights for survival and to kill the other players. On top of that there will be a team based arena with ranking system*, and they will be balancing PvP to make all characters fair and enjoyable.

With no currency such as gold in the game vendors will sell you things for items and you can sell some items in combination for higher level items an example of this would be a 20% weapon gets you a blacksmiths whetstone. Full list of vendors recipes found here:Link.

Building your character in Path of exile is so unique and fun. I am always going back and creating a new character because I had thought of an idea for another class. Seeing your builds come together is great as it takes a lot of planning to do. If you have a build you like make a video or guide and post it here and I will add it to the OP.

When the game is released it will be Free to play with micro-transactions these transactions are said to be things from only aesthetic such as dragon headed fire balls to new class skins, and the ability to create your own servers rules which you and your friends can play on.

If you see anything that needs to be edited, removed, or added please send me a PM and I will get right on it! I plan on adding more info and images later.
Items marked with a * means I am unsure and would like clarification.

If you guys have suggestions for good newbie guides (threads, youtube videos), that would help. so much stuff is outdated. Also what other sections I should add or change, if my to be added section isn't enough

Also I been focusing a lot on how to present the game to a new person coming in, but most people coming to the thread are probably old veterans like all of us, so what would you guys want to see in an OP?

Lastly I wasn't sure what logo / opening video to use, I chose the Open Beta video cus I feel like it sums up the game well, but it's kind of old. Other options are something more cinematic, or the Atlas of Worlds video which is hype. Lemme know

Agreed on the new person focus, the regulars know themselves where they have to look to find cool shit.

Beta video best video, I'd also add the Atlas trailer and one of the Mirek videos (probably this one. Combined that's probably all the hype one can ask for.

Tools section I'd steal 1:1 from reddit, maybe without the Item Info Script, poeninja and the share your build link.

Newbie guides are rough without directly promoting youtubers/shoehorning people into stuff. It might be better if (at least for now while we don't have many newcomers) people straight up ask in here to get a few and more varied perspectives. Maybe a paragraph on following a guide vs just making your own build because that's usually an instant topic that comes up.

TL guild should be mentioned (don't need rules or anything, so far just common TL courtesy worked fine), while we're cleaning house I should also find someone to rewrite the modnote on top of the thread because half of those guys are inactive/too bad at clicking (you know who you are <3) to be able to invite.

This picture sums up Blade Flurry rather nicely.

I guess I know what type of Jugg I'll farm lab with. >_>

Decision decisions.

My build ranking is something along the line of: map clear speed/single target deeps/survivability/affordability

Raider Varunastra ST: 8/7/9/6
Blade Flurry Inquisitor: 7/9/7/8
Crit Bow Assassin: 7/9/8/6

Actually ST base dmg sucks major balls so I'm doing Crit Bow Raider instead.
Usually bow user is limited by movement speed but Raider is literally sonic now so.

+ Show Spoiler [Atlas of Worlds Trailer] +
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO38Wai1eOQ

Lemme know

Yeah I think using the most recent banners and videos would be more sexy. And the only thing you could put in that would be useful for vets would be a link to the last page of the thread. Maybe a hall of fame for posts, but we don't meme that hard so there wouldn't be much content to choose from (RIP hon/dota thread).

Another Blade league. Not even Blade Vortex got gutted as hard as I would have thought. In fact it got its damage increased at higher stack size (22.5% at lvl 20). I think the to go Ascendancy won't be Pathfinder but Berserker now though, and here at least there they won't have 12k ES but 7-8k Life at best.

Blade Flurry will still be the meta though, it needed a bigger nerf for that to change. I'm underwhelmed by these patch notes for the most parts. I do like Raider buffs and Pathfinder nerfs but... Scion? Where's my Glacial Hammer buff by 6%? No buffs to Life whatsoever, while ES largely stayed the same and while several map monsters apparently got their damage increased. Poison/Ignite/Bleed double dipping will still be the way to deal insane damage.

Well, these patch notes definitely didn't change the build I want to do, as totem resistances and totem nodes got buffed and I want to try Siege Ballista. Just sadly will have to go Life for that I guess.

Also, the only changes to Poison/Ignite/Bleed will make it much worse for skills that use Less Duration (Earthquake) and much better for skills that use the Increased Duration support gem. I think a chaos conversion Firestorm build (or simply dual Apep's + added chaos) with Increased Duration support and the duration nodes on the tree would be insane for long battles. Though godly skills like Blade Flurry will simply kill before that duration is over.
