You need at least two midfielder really good at tackles/defense, but with seedorf/aquilani it was really hard. Nocerino would have been more useful imo.
don't get me started on seedorf. the guy just doesn't defend, or pretends to. aquilani should have been sent off. it's sad to say but we really need to find a replacement for nesta, his body just ain't holding up any more =[ zambrotta/gattuso/seedorf should not be playing another game. we don't apply enough pressure, going to come back to bite us
i reckon we'll draw madrid next round like we usually do ==
Mexes if he recovers (/hope so) was bought and shown that he's able to be the replacement for Nesta. There is still the problem of Zambrotta, noboy is better than him atm, and that should not be too hard, wondering wtf Criscito is doing in Russia.
I really think that Gattuso could give the inspiration necessary to fight at least on an equal footing in the midfield, he's no longer that great but he still has the will needed imo.
German football magazine kicker.de sportal.de claims, Leverkusen is through to playoffs, while Chelsea must win their last game. I understand the former, but I don't get the latter.
Let me explain quick my thoughts: Uefa-reglement says, if two or more teams end up with same points, direct comparison determines progression.
The first part, Leverkusen's granted spot in playoffs, is clear to me after some thinking. Chelsea play the last game against Valencia, and Leverkusen is up 1 point with 9 compared to the others both 8. So if Leverkusen wins or draws against Genk, they are through just by points. If they lose, and either team wins, they are through aswell by points. If they lose, and the other game ends draw, the direct comparison between the 3 teams decides.
Which means Leverkusen first, Valencia second to Chelsea due to X:X draw score. So the statement of Leverkusen has secured playoffs, granted.
But now, we does Chelsea MUST win?
If Leverkusen does NOT lose their match (which is most likely), the direct comparison of Valencia and Chelsea counts. In case they play a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge, is 1-1 from Valencia and 0-0 from London, resulting in Chelsea advancing due to scored away goal.
Where is my wrong though? What am I missing? I am confused.

Bah. Götze and Bendtner both injured after the first third of the game, and still Dortmund should have done better.
I don't know why I watch Dortmund's games in the Champions League anymore, they always disappoint.
they should qualify tho, beating Marseille at home should be more than doable.
Even if they win, they are in a bad spot due to direct comparison. They need to score at least 3 goals to advance against Marseille. And that doesnt even matter if Olympiacos wins against Arsenal.
imo chelsea advances if they win or play 0:0 as you have said.
if the match ends in a higher draw as 1:1 valencia advances because they scored the higher number of goals away from home between the teams. if the game result is 1:1 the goal difference from all group matches gives valencia the advantage.
Horrendous penalty decision in the United/Barcodes game fucks up my accumulator. Injury time winner incorrectly given offside as well, Krul godmode and at least one clearance off the line. Displeased.

Totally agree with this. the officiating by the referees were worse than shite. but tim krul did play very well.
seems like it's kind of out of the blue, but I guess he's just been good at maintaining a facade. lots of players struggle with coping with retirement.

just shows how boring la liga is. A 2 team race with a winner confirmed 6 months before the season ends. They should make a league for RM and Barca only. :s
such horrible news about gary's death. seems only last year that he was our manager, because it was. one of the true legends of the english game, i'm still in shock now

Agreed, Barça now needs to win to even get back on the race, 6 points behind is a sh*t ton when it comes to this 2 teams, the Championship it's Real Madrid's to lose atm...

So sad to hear. By all accounts he was doing a great job at Wales and turning them into a hard team to beat - 5 wins in ten games. Young and talented. RIP.
Very touching interview with Robbie Savage, former Welsh international who played with Speed for many years. It just highlights how much of a shocl this was to everyone who knew him - Speed did a tv spot yesterday, Savage spoke to him and there was apparently no sign of anything wrong or affecting Speed.
