Ugh, this jsut comes across as lazy game design and the first major issue I have had in this game. why should that be lazy design. You want the lazy design. The system how it works in EU3 is closer to reality then what you want. Or can you tell me how you want to conquer empty provinces which have no cities? ^^ Its not like there is nothing in these territories. Occupying those territories would involve occupying said defense structures. Just like 90% of the rest of the map. This isn't some barren wasteland with nothing in it or an area previously uninhabited. Ahhhh rage, rage, rage, rage, rage. The entire reason nomadic horse tribes were so difficult for the civilized nations to defeat was because they did not have any infrastructure to attack. There were not "defense structures." And the Eurasian steppe was a hell of a lot bigger than 10% of the world historically. I don't know about the game, since i haven't played it yet. But yeah, Eurasian steppe is a wasteland. It's mostly just grass and fresh water and mountains. Sounds like a brilliant portrayal if they're making it super difficult to annex. The thing is that The Golden Horde is a nomadic people, they don't have big cities with castles. They move around Except in game they do have defenses built in every territory. If you want to argue for realism, take out the forts so its more like the African nations. It still slows down progress but I don't have to siege useless forts at the same time. Golden Hord fortresses have so low moral you dont even have to siege them
You sure about that? Playing Muscovy again right now. The GH forts are start with full morale and assaulting them without a breach is just as hard as any other province with a fort. Maybe you are playing a different version of the game than me?

can be that while I was trying muscovy the golden horde had a lot of fighting going on so maybe their forts where allready weakened

That could well be. After all fortresses does take some time to get back to 1000 or abow

Along those lines I have found that if you don't get the Annex Ryzan mission right off the bat the game gets a ton harder as Muscovy.

I was lucky enough to get the conquer Tver mission and right after that I got conquer Jaroslavl and they were allied with Rjasan so in 1402 I had all the smaller countries.

Just picked this up off Steam due to you guys' awesome recommendations, and the RIDICULOUS sale price of $7.49 for the Chronicles edition ^_^
Looking forward to digging into this :D

I've had Tver a couple times now. It usually ends with the GH invading, then Novgrod declaring war with Ryzan immediately allying with Novgrod and jumping in as well. Then its become a test of how long I can hold against all 3 coming after me hard. I usually go a few rounds but fall in the end.

was playing ottomans on hard and at around 1410 GH is already utterly destroying eastern europe, reloaded the save as them to check them out and i see 100k standing army, 100+ force limit, 1500 gold, facerolling poland and lithuania.
What does poland and lithuania have combined? 34 force limit, 3 regiments left and 10 gold
how the hell can uncivilized normad hordes have an organized army that is greater than all of europe combined and endless gold
and somehow the game rates their military at 2 stars, rrright

Sounds like Eastern Europe fought among themselves and got rolled when the Horde came swooping in. As per my rant earlier, taking land off them is really hard as Muscovy. You have to pick your spots extremely well or else they will simply roll you. I haven't tired to play as them yet, but from what I have seen so far, they can field some large armies off safely pretty much right off the bat.

never fight the golden horde in the beginning it will not help you. Always try to get peace with them as fast as possible and if you cant help it send them tribute money. But fighting them before you took over Novgorod is impossible.
this is my 1600 Russia

I have a mac (go ahead and laugh at me) so I can only run Europa Universalis Complete. It's very cheap, but without the two expansions is it worth it?

I'd say you would miss a lot of the fun without the two expansions so i'd say you should not buy it.
Take the money you saved add some more and get a PC

Thanks for your help but it was only a little over 3 bucks so I went ahead and bought it. I'm a big fan of macro strategy games so I just couldn't resist.

Damn, $7 on sale ~_~ was looking at this a few days ago.. getting really lucky with my Steam sale timings at the moment!

Just realized that steam didn't update my game (chronicles) for some reason.
If you have the same problem go to your game folder (...steamapps\common\europa universalis iii - complete) and run eu3.exe and choose check for updates. Download the patch and install it manually, run the game via steam as usual or from eu3game.exe. Newest version is 5.1.

The 2 star military rating is actually for the king, queen or whatever leader is leading the country (the other skills are Administrative and Diplomatic). The more military stars a king has, the more bonuses your army/naval morale and land/sea tech investments gets. It's not reflective of the size and strength of the armies.
edit: Oops, I just verified and all the stuff I said is actually wrong. Silly me. The country ratings at the start of the game look very similar to the King skill ratings (both use Military and Diplomacy star ratings!).

I've got this same problem in my Austria game and would like to know the answer.
I have 0.0 infamy and a leader with like 5 or 6 diplomatic skill at least, and high relations with a country, not at war, yet it's always just "impossible" or "very unlikely" when I try to ally anyone. Nations I don't have high relations with are always "impossible" as well.
No clue. What else could be affecting their choice to not ally me besides infamy, diplomatic skill, current wars, and relations? It's at the point now where I've basically got to fight England, France, Russia, Spain, and North Germany any time I go to war, and they never seem to fight each other anymore. Year is around 1717.
The AI can only have 3 Allies + their vassals to prevent ridiculous cascading alliances, that is probably the problem for you.

when you get cascading alliances most of the time it goes like this
you declare war -> enemies allies come -> allies of the allies come -> you dead
