I ended up downloading vanilla SFIV just to try the game out and I loved it, been playing with my keyboard and contemplating getting a stick or an xbox 360 controller. Would a 360 controller be a downgrade from a keyboard?
I would say a 360 controller is definitely a downgrade. It's weird on keyboard, but at least it's doable and there are people who play keyboard (I even saw a guy who modded a keyboard to plug into a ps2, at a tournament).
Unless you also have a 360, I'd recommend a ps3 stick though, I think there's less chances of it randomly not working with your pc.

Both my 360 TE and my Filco keyboard both worked right away, for AE - no config needed.
I'd say 360 is your best bet for PC, as 360 controllers in general have a pretty good track record on PC. Also, the 360 PCB is encoded and the PS3 one isn't, so it's easier to mod 360 sticks (although, nowadays you can get PCBs that work for all systems...I prefer keeping the original PCB as well, though). If anything, I've heard more people complaining about their PS3 stuff not working on PC's right away than 360 stuff. I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread that PS3 stuff doesn't work with a certain type of mobo/processor...
My first online fight was best of 5 vs Hakan. My Makoto prevailed! :D Didn't notice any lag, everything seemed very responsive.

It should be comparable to the old style Saturn pads. You might want to get one of those, they are pretty cheap: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=usb saturn&_sacat=See-All-Categories
The Saturn controller and the Madcatz Fighting controller should be fairly nice to use if you can map the triple punch and the triple kick to the shoulder buttons. Pressing all 3 respective buttons at the same time, as you might on an arcade stick is a bit tough to do consistently.
PlayStation controllers are also OK to use (and commonly used, prime example being WolfKrone), as the triggers have a small activation travel. The triggers on the Xbox controller have to travel too far to activate. Also, the Xbox controller's d-pad sucks (it's one big chunk!) whereas the PS one is playable. Analog sticks are usually considered too loosey goosey for tight control, as well as having to travel too far to activate.

I've been using one to save a load of money on a stick while I figured out how much street fighter I'll be playing. I got it in HMV for £12 and from what I've seen they're much cheaper on the high street than online (they're in demand online) so head to an HMV or something like that.
I really like playing on the pad though. The d-pad is really good so quarter-circles are a breeze. If you hold it claw grip you can use the fingers on the buttons. There's a few top players who use that pad so you can use it permanently if you want and they're cheap enough on the street to trade one for a stick if you feel you want one.

Cheers for the quick review.
Yea basically in the same boat, didn't really wanna spalsh out £100+ on a stick straight away and couldn't find a SE stick to mod later.
Not been able to find anything on the high street in Birmingham apart from a few Wireless Hori Sticks. However I have ordered one for £16 online for now.

It's out now, but i think Microsoft sets the region of all live accounts to america by default so when you search for a game they're all red bar, fun times...

To Australian players who have experience with SF4 PC or have tried SSF4AE PC online, how's the online play? Is the Australian/NZ player-base big enough to constantly get low-pinged opponents? How's the latency when playing cross-region (NA/EU/Asia)?
Thanks! (Currently downloading SSF4AE off steam)

SF4 on PC was dead because SSF4 was released for consoles but Capcom decided not to release it on PC due to SF4 being one of the most pirated games on the PC that year(?). But before the release of SSF4, SF4 probably had a pretty decent PC player-base I think, especially with the popularity of PC mods/skins.
Don't take my word for it though, I've never owned any version of SF4 prior to AE (which I'm still downloading).

I'm getting it on PC, i also bought Street fighter IV PC version when it was up. There are a good amount of player on the live of SFIV, I'm pretty sure SSFIVAE will get well crowded.
This game is not only for consoles, as long as you have an arcade stick to plug on your PC
Well some can argue that you can play it well on keyboard or with controllers, so you have tons of options on PC

Surprisingly, the keyboard works really well. I'm not very good at this game, but I can line up my special moves and dodge a bit, but I like the keyboard because one you get the key combination down for a move, you can do it pretty quickly, and exact. I find controllers don't do EXACTLY what you want them to do. I haven't played on an arcade stick yet. Maybe one day.

I still got an old PS2 pad and a fitting adapter for it around, so I'd be using this.. I also have an 360 pad but the d-pad on that thing is fucking horrible... and while it might seem weird at first it's probably pretty doable with a keyboard
Somebody here said that fightpads are relatively cheap at HMV, i'm going to london in august, so i might pick one of those up there if they have one

a lot of new blood coming out of the woodwork cause of PC release.

I picked up a copy of AE PC, will probably play that some tonight.

You can always set your keyboard up like a hitbox, it's a lot better than a gamepad (afaik).
you can find video's about it here.
I set it up with numpad 0 as up and 7 8 9 4 5 6 as action buttons. Plays really smooth.

Now I'm tempted to get AE PC too, and flex my keyboard warrior skills (even though I could just plug in my stick, which I have done before).
With AE PC, testing stuff and making tool-assisted combos for giggles is a lot easier as well...
