People use the possession stat as a shorthand for who has been in control of the match all the time because it usually works, but it doesn't always, and until the second half it didn't particularly mean much in this tie. I feel like I'm having to explain this to a baby. I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on football, but I'd consider the way Germany was counterattacking during the WC an art. What Real Madrid did tonight... eh, not so much.

Restricting an opponent's movement and slowing down their passing play isn't an attempt to play outside of the rules, it's actually part of how you really play football. I thought having the ball at any given point was supposed to be part of football as well, instead of letting your opponent have it all the time (though i know what you mean). In the end, whoever scores one more goal than the opponent wins, thus wins. (And everyone would sign for winning the champions league while having 1% possession). Its just not a team i personally enjoy watching and therefor hope they lose badly ![]()

If you grow up in such a culture you can not fantom why people enjoy that boring play like Real does with their 3 defending midfielders.

I do feel like it is a good way to try to face up against Barca if you've got the ability. It's not like madrid tried anything else than defend... If you even position pepe on the midfield then the intentions are clear. Btw you're as much as an anti fan as others are Barca fans and there is no need to call people clueless either.

You'll notice that many of the teams who doesnt dare to play football against barca and just defend, end up losing. While teams, even really bad ones compared to barca, who just go 'fuck it, lets just give it a shot' actually manage to play up to barca. You even saw it in the beginning of second half. Madrid came out blazing, they pressed barca and really started to control the game. Constant pressure, and barca made tons of mis-passing. And then pepe sees red, and it all falsl apart ![]() Erm, thats why Barca have gone 28 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss all season in La Liga. The only way to beat them is to be completely solid defensively and break at them with quality when you can

We all love a fighter who stands and bangs but counterattacking jiu jitsu specialist Anderson Silva is the greatest pound for pound fighter. I can appreciate a good defense but going for so many defensive players and having no intentions of attacking isn't something I appreciate no. Plus barca has an outstanding defense and still try to be very offensive so yeah there are possibilities to have both a great defense and offense.

Why bring Ronaldo on in a game like this if u aren't gonna try to attack more? Now he's in for a hell of task, he must attack on Camp Nou, and it can get ugly if Barcelona gets the first goal in that fixture. Man Utd vs Barcelona in the finals 99,9%. Dunno who to root for there, love Man.Utd and Barcelona;d Ronaldo is the ideal player to counterattack with. In the Copa finals and in the 1H today, Madrid were getting better opportunities by having 7 players defend and Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo counter. Trying to be balanced is what got them 5-0'd. Agree, Barca v United is virtually guaranteed. Now Barca have no reason to ever give RM a counterattack opportunity (just pass all game if they want), and Schalke just look bad.

My point is that in the games were Barca had trouble was against teams that tried pressuring barca instead of just parking the bus. The majority of barcas opponents play very defensively, and yet, barca still wins. Letting barca control the game and hoping for random chance at some point is not a very good idea. Unless your in the situation like Inter-Barca last season. And even then its very risky. Just look at arsenal, was up 2 goals. Second leg they just parked the bus, and gave barca control, and lost. Ofc. you need a solid defence, but you need a solid offence aswell. Madrid didnt have that, even with a very scary bench.
