I don't really get why there seems to be a majority of big nono on the waypoint system. Actually I think that the quicksave system does not go with every kind of game, and generally not in FPS, you can just quick save every 10 seconds or so, and voilà, game's done. Sure it can be frustrating, but when you finally go though a tough moment, the feeling is even better! I'll let you quick save in the middle of a fight in a FPS then... You will load and die. Voilà ! Your save's done. FPS is the only type of game that should have quicksaves eveytime (at least for me). When i go home, game for one hour and have to stop... i don't like the day after to have to redo 5 or 10 minutes (sometimes 1 FUCKING HOUR (fuck you Farcry blood dragon)) of what i did yesterday. A game should have quicksave and checkpoints. Skyrim is a good example of how a save system should be (or Starcraft for that matter).
I did spend quite some time saying 'I'm almost at a checkpoint, don't switch he power off now pleaaaaase!' to my parents, so it might have strengthen me for that. Also I may not play as many badly designed 'checkpoint games' it seems, so I tend to join the Laurens opinion on that subject.

Galak-z is on sale for like $5 and is an amazing 2d space/mech shooter with 80 saturday morning cartoon style. And its a rogue-like with physics based combat and movement. Strongly recommend for those who like a fun challenging game.

Your save's done. If anything, this is an argument AGAINST quicksave lmao. Who would want a feature that could fuck up your save file? A combination of quicksave + autosave (stored to separate files) is best imo. If quicksave fucks you over, you have a fallback point. If I have to choose between ONLY quicksave, or ONLY checkpoints, i take the latter anyday. Have some faith in the devs to not be retards and implement checkpoints at proper timing (see call of duty campaigns)
Yes both are better but quicksave is a must. I mean... Look at a game like Baldur's gate without quicksaves or even freaking doom2 (ok it's not quick save per say but manual ones. same thing for me)
Never seen a quicksave get corrupted (i'm lying i played Fallout3 at launch) but unless FO3. Never happened in 25 years
What i'm saying is Quick saves or manual saves.

It depends on the game. Linear action games usually dont need quicksaves because the upcoming path is set in stone and the same with every playthrough. Games where you decide where to go or what to do next need some kind of manual saving because the time and space between potential fallback points varies from player to player.

Yes exactly. Doom levels or any doomlike can be run through a path you choose. Quicksave needed Limbo ? I'll take checkpoints without minding
Sorry for derailing the thread btw. We can take it to PM if people are annoyed.

You won't get why checkpoints are bad until you become the parent in that relationship.

Any recommendation on Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments ?

Got System Shock 2 for about $2; it's pretty good so far. I expected the graphics to be worse, but they are very tidy. An ancestor of Bioshock, lets you explore while not being as convoluted as Deus Ex. The creepy atmosphere is very good, although the re-spawning enemies take away from it slightly. Haven't finished it, so can't really comment on the story.

I would say yes. The http://www.faforever.com/ server is nice to play on and there are a lot of mods if one wants that (sadly player amount seems to keep dropping over the years). The campaign and single player custom games are worth 5usd regardless if you will play multiplayer or not. You will also see a good solution to how to scroll on the map that I wished more games used.

Gave in and bought offworld trading company. Damn, what a game! Never played an RTS that so chill.

i was quite disappointed by evil within, even if the level design and the DA is really good, the rest is the most generic stuff you can find on the market
