Sounds like you're in the sweet spot around Lair where you just stealth on most things, and invis on everything else. Okawaru is interesting for a SpEn, do you intend to go for the extended endgame? Just make sure you don't overuse invis and run out of food, get passwall if you can, level up your spellcasting a little more to preserve hunger. I've found a lot of randomness since Hive was removed in how much food you get access to per run. Sometimes it's infinite, sometimes almost nil.

Oh my god, I had no idea anyone on TL played this game >.> I've been gradually grinding through with my DeSu and trying to get a low enough failure rate on scorps to really start moving quickly.
Anyone else escaped with the orb? Or found their first rune? Or reached Lair? I'd say (in reverse order) these are the three big stepping stones in terms of learning how to play.

Okawaru is really a pretty bad spen god by the way. You can win with him just fine because godless spen is still super good because it is spen, but he doesn't really give you anything you care about. Better gods: Ash, Zin, Jiyva, Kiku, Nemelex, Lugonu (if you find an altar early or want to do extended).
(If you are confused by checking stats with Sequell you should note that old Okawaru was pretty good for spen so that is why there are a lot of spen of oka wins. Since Okawaru lost might he has not been good for short blades users in general.)
Anyway spen with invisibility castable is pretty much only going to die if you are super reckless, at least until Zot or so, so just don't be dumb.

Yeah i was just taking Okawaru for the hope of good weapons at higher levels... which isn't optimal i suppose. I'll probably try one of the gods Crate suggests, though a number of them look like they take a fair bit of learning first (decks....)

Well the thing about weapon gifts for spen is that you start the game with the only weapon you need.

pain brand +9/+9 dagger too good

I can deal with the crappy defence of an ogre berserker, but the hunger problems are infuriating.

Got my furthest yet, gotta watch out for these though!
15548 insectocean the Cleaver (level 12, -43/104 HPs) Began as a Minotaur Berserker on July 18, 2012. Was a High Priest of Trog. Annihilated by a titanic slime creature (97 damage) ... on Level 14 of the Dungeon. The game lasted 02:30:23 (16033 turns).

yeah... as soon as they start merging, they get really scary @_@

Merged slimes and ettins are unbelievably dangerous melee-ing common monsters. If you roll low and they roll high, you're done. Fortunately, the former tend to split in open areas and when you're out of LOS (abuse corners), and the latter aren't very durable. Also slimes waste a turn when they merge, so you can escape.

yeah, i called in a troll reinforcement but the blob 1 shot it, sad thing was i had a tele scroll that i could have used had i known the troll would get owned.

Hey guys, im kind of new to these Roguelikes, having just played about 10 hrs of Dungeons of Dredmor, which i loved, is this game the next step for me as a noob to the genre? DoD was preety easy to understand, will this game kick my ass? or are there any other roguelikes you guys would recommend for a noob? Cause im starting to see these games have so much more depth than your typical RPG, and really want to delve further into this. And also, no ASCII or w/e its called, it actually gives me a headeache, dont care about graphics, but ASCII it not for me.

The big thing about slime creatures is they don't have any way to call for help, so if you just stop when you get the first one in view and let it come to you you will only fight one at a time. Nice and safe.
Also as far as ogbe hunger goes it is probably less of a problem for ogbe than for normal races apart from the fact ogres will spend a bit longer time healing (because of high hp/bad ev and ac). Saprovore makes up for the faster metabolism.

Tales of Maj'Eyal: http://te4.org/ IMHO it's kinda more noob-friendly than DCSS, has nicer graphics and more traditional RPG style mechanics in relation to classes/races than DCSS. DCSS is also very good though, definitely not as overwhelming as SOME roguelikes (Dwarf Fortress, ADOM)

I think the most popular roguelikes nowadays are Crawl and Nethack. Crawl has a Tiles version on their website (left side here) which can help you get acclimated. I don't know about Nethack though ^^
Difficulty-wise, yeah, I'd say Crawl is quite hard, and you'll probably die a lot more often than you would in DoD (though I haven't played DoD, I've watched a friend play quite a bit.) But the Knowledge Bots and the ##crawl irc channel are great ways to get help. (If you're using the irc channel, you might want to try WebTiles, though it has much less mouse functionality than the local version does. But you should get used to keyboard-only anyway ^^)

Thanks for the replies guys ^^. So i think what i will do is try te4 , since it does seem like the next thing up from DoD, seems somewhat similar to me, once i get used to it, or get bored lol whichever, il try out DCSS. Ok off i go, thanks again!

Enjoy one of the best RPG/Roguelike experiences ever! ^^

I have been autoselecting a viable combination (#), and most classes are pretty straightforwards. However, the assassin has me really confused. Should I be just focusing on stealth, stab, and short sword, or throwing and dodging... or what? Seems to be the hardest so far. I have a hard time taking out many mobs, and I'm not fast enough to run away.

if you want to learn dcss, you can watch people play and chat with them in webtiles you can ask them why they are leveling a skill or things like that. most people are nice enough to inform you. you can also get an idea of popular builds like Spriggan enchanter, hill orc priest, minotaur death knight.

You can also watch (and send messages to) console games online, not just webtiles.
