Ogre hunters are my new favourite. You can beat shit down with a giant spiked club, or you can throw a net on them so they can't melee you and squish them with big rocks from range.

Ogres and large rocks are fun, but too hard for me. Being carnivorous with a fast metabolism makes it hard to do the whole trog thing. Eating rotten chunks is ok but doesn't totally make up for it. It's hard to wear armor and most of their stuff trains slow except for fighting. It seems more like a challenge/fun race but... very challenging.

That's why you go hunter instead of berserker. Berserking takes too much food, and this lets you pick a better god and take some spellcasting (Deflect missiles etc..) later on

Damn this games addictive, my 2nd day with it, proud of myself, making it to dungeon lvl 5, with a Kobald Berserker, the easiest class as i understand. Still new as hell to these rogue games, but damn fun times. The game lasted 00:37:49 (6441 turns).

I noticed in the morgue.txt, where it said i had a book of spells or something, and my God dissaproved, does that really hurt me that much? should i just never pick magic items?

Actually, the berserker god likes it when you blow up spellbooks. He should grant you a power that lets you do so.

Ah thank you, so keep spell books, so i can burn them at a later date, but im guessing theres no point in having any other magic stuff, since im all short sword/dodge, no magic. While im here, what would be an easy spellcaster to try out?

if you are praying trog you can use the special 'a'bility to burn spell books around you. this ability makes a pillar of fire on top of the book. so you drop the book, tunnel enemies to there and burn it(iirc also increases piety) if you want to play as a mage you can try deep elf conjurer or high elf wizard. while playing as a mage you will have to level spellcasting a bit. because casting spells increase your hunger, and spellcasting lowers this effect and lets you cast stronger spells. Mephitic Cloud makes early game so much easier, its basically fungal growth but instead of stunning it confuses the enemies.

Important to note that you shouldn't read the books though. I believe that you lose piety if you read them to find out what they are. (It could be abused if you wanted to save really good books and switch away from Trog later)

As for spellcasters, your background doesn't matter nearly as much as your species/deity, since you can eventually learn all of the spells with any character. It mostly just determines your starting spells. Spriggan is a pretty easy race to play since they have insane movespeed, otherwise I guess a Deep Elf for the aptitudes. Wizard and Fire Elementalist I think are the easiest starting backgrounds for a Conjurer-type (Conjurer can be good, but it would suck for a Spriggan, and could be difficult for a newer player to choose how to skill up and aim their clouds). Also, you could try a Summoner, they are fairly straightforward.

I think DE is pretty hard because you are very fragile (probably the most fragile race in the game, since every other race with the same or less hp has some sort of EV boost), so you can also try: demigod, draconian, naga, human, sludge elf.

Personally I would consider at least DrFE and NaFE easier than DEFE (and also for most of the rest of the "mage" backgrounds). HOFE and HOEE are also pretty fun and are good for trying a heavy-armour "reaver"-type character but figuring out what to do with those is a bit more complicated.

Merfolk is actually also quite good if you want to go the ice/hybrid route.

I drank a potion of mutation and got the "you evolve quickly" mutation, along with +1 dex, and "your vision is slightly blurry". All of the mutations I have gained since then (due to evolution) have been good.

Now the knowledge bots only mention a hard time reading scrolls, detecting traps, memorizng spells, etc... but nothing game-breaking for a wizard. They mention nothing about increased spell failure.

Given that I have some really good mutations, if find a potion of cure mutation should I drink it to get rid of blurred vision? or keep them all?

edit: also, one of the good mutations is clarity of mind, which seems extremely good given that I like to cast mephitic cloud at my feet all the time...

Is evolution still active? Have you only gained +1 dex, or did you get other good mutations?

Blurry vision can be pretty saddening. It's not game-breaking per SE but being unable to detect traps, and having a failure chance on scrolls can both kill you. If the only good mutation you got was the +1 dex I'd wipe it for sure, especially if you're no longer evolving.

I'm still evolving: my current mutations are

+1 dex
exceptional clarity of mind
blurry vision
spit poison (lol)
rapidly evolving.

oh man. That's not too bad at all. Ok, I'd say don't drink the potion because clarity of mind is great, and rapidly evolving gives you 3 good mutations for every bad one. but REMEMBER the scroll failure chance, that'll come back to bite you at the worst possible time if you forget about it.

If you're playing a DEFE and you don't get any useful defensive spells by dungeon 8 or 9, how exactly do you stay alive? Just play extremely cautiously, and don't fight centaurs?

By now you should be putting some exp into dodge and the like, but unfortunately yeah as a DEFE if you only have your starting book you'll need to just be super careful around Centaurs and Orc Priests. Against melee opponents, you can use Conjure Flame (most enemies fear flame) to block off a corridor if there's room between you and them.

If spellbook-finding seems to be a problem, consider worshipping Sif Muna if you haven't committed to anyone yet. If you hit max Piety (******), you'll occasionally get granted spellbooks full of spells you don't know.

To be honest, as a FE your best defense is a good offense. Centaurs should die to 1-2 fireballs, or an orb of destruction as you walk around a corner. You should also try to pick up a buckler and get shields to 5 as soon as possible.

Use the defensive spells summon corner, summon staircase, and summon being-not-in-LOS liberally. These are super secret spells because they aren't listed in the Z menu; you cast them with hjklyubn only. Also they have a 100% success rate at any skill level.

Ah, for my level of skill, all three of those summons fail occasionally, and sometimes I accidentally cast "summon start running into blackspace" or "summon stairdive", or even "summon double stairdive" instead. Any advice?
