The letters actually cover a range of what the multiplier could be for each stat. Example: E = 1.0x - 1.2x D = 1.2x - 1.4x C = 1.4x - 1.6x
In this case, if you had 20 str and 30 dex: if you had a E/D/-/- weapon it would give you 20-24 + 36-42 for a total of 56-66 extra damage. if you had another weapon that is D/E/-/- it could give you 24-28 + 30-36 for a total of 54-64 extra damage.
Keep in mind upgrading a weapon will often increase the bonus from the stats (although it is often small increments, so it may not change to the next *letter grade*). Also note some weapons receive different bonus damage types from different stats (eg, increase magic damage with int stat, and physical from str).
One more question since I just started playing Dark Souls, are you able to do anything with your weapon after you got it to Raw+5 (I believe is max)? Or do you need to find a new weapon to upgrade at that point?

In short, yes you can. It's better for you to just read up, as there are a lot of stuff you can do.

I just found this flowchart too.

ok i need more advise i been playing like 6 hrs and im still like lvl 13 is that WAY to low? i keep dieing n losing souls, im playing a warrior also , whats the best class the descriptions i hv found are all really bad for each 1

13 is fine, people are that level just after the metal boar. If you need help, try put your white soapstone down so other players can summon you. If you help defeat their boss, you get humanity and you can use that to reverse hollowing and then summon people yourself.
Used an Eye of Death as I joined the covenant. Apparently they're broken at the moment. Couldn't even stop it so I couldn't progress to the Catacombs boss.
So I decided to invade some guy. Where I spawned he hadn't been so I kept backtracking. Turns out he was waiting for me as I crossed over one of the bridges, he pulled the lever so the bridge turns to its side and plummeted me to my death.
Now I have to get through those fucking wheel cunts again...
shit I've been invaded, I already took the blacksmith shortcut so I can't do the new trick...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa and I'm not going out there having to deal with wheel fags and a phantom...He'll find me eventually...
OK so I hid and slowly started killing the wheels. Turns out he fell off and died as I was doing it.
ah man he fucked up my bridges
Man Pinwheel is so terrible

currently just farming souls now, totoka wot class u playing? and ya i killed the metal boar at 13, i kept dieing after that n losing countless souls, and i have only ever seen 1 thing to summon sum1 and whenever i put mine down no1 summons me, and currently still around the boar area, and when do people start invading you not happened to me yet

Levels don't really matter that much early on, just keep trying to progress. I take it those knights are killing you? Hang in there as there's a bonfire near as well as a place where people start doing summons.
When you're human form that's when people can invade you, but I wouldn't expect it so much early in the game

well i usually die to guys with spears or waste alot of health pots on them, where is the bonfire furthest i got was to the huge black guy in armour but i ran from him n ended up pullin a knight and therefore dieing, getting to around that area i lose like 3/4 oout of 5 of my healing things tho
|
Man this is fucking difficult. It took me whole fucking day to kill the minotaur boss early in the game. Isn't there a way like in demon souls to use the souls you get? Do you level up with them in the bonfire? Cause I just keep losing them by dying twice, constantly at zero. Now im stuck at the dragon, but I guess its passable somehow.

With the spear guys you can hit them and that usually baits them into an attack. Then you can either block and attack or backstab them. Just outside of the huge black guy there are 3 skeletons, 1 with a crossbow. If you follow that long path away from the black guy you'll find a bonfire down some stairs and a blacksmith
Don't worry about losing souls, if you worry about it now then you ain't gonna be happy when you lose 40k. You can easily grind them back really fast by getting summoned and help kill other people's bosses because you get the full amount of souls too. To level up you gotta be at a bonfire. I spent a little while getting summoned and killing a boss which netted me 15k each time. Levels aren't really that important, you can get them when you want.
Edit: Just joined Blade of the Darkmoon. Gonna bust into some worlds.
Currently got Occult Club/Dragon Crest shield with Great Lightning Spear, Gravelord Sword Dance, Walk of Peace and Karmic Justice

Killing that merchant is a grave, grave mistake.

Damn it, level too high, wasted two cracked red eye orbs trying to invade. Kinda sucks since the orbs disappears even if it fails to find a target. Took a peak at the Book of the Guilty to check out the highest sinners. I saw a level 17 in top 5, lol.

It is passable.... because it's the only path left for you to take. Lulz. Man up and Good luck!

yeahh i killed the gargoyles!! i'm the greatest gamer of all time ... .. but now i'm scared to go into the forest x)

You don't have to go to the forest. If you picked up a Basement Key then you can unlock the door just before the red dragon and can progress down there.
Meanwhile, I suck at PvP. When the lock on is so short (or when they're freakin' phantom like) I don't see how I can do any offensive spell. I guess I could scare them with Gravelord Sword Dance, do the aoe slow and then throw lightning at them but I dunno. Maybe I should just man up and club them to death. Or maybe I should get 100000 Lightning defense...hmmm
And if any of you kill big boobs I will hunt you down.

You are suppose to use the blue orb to go to the world of the guilty!

easy way for the guys with spears:
block, kick and attack..
if u kick, they cant keep up the block and so its a free hit
