I'm in bed watching HSC VI atm since i seem to have caught a cold, so just try to go on US East in an hour since i most likely won't be online to invite you into the TL outfit today.

Got work in 1 hour ^_^. But yeah, will get in contact with you guys over the next few days anyway.
Activity for Mattherson at EU times hasn't been bad at all, especially on weekends. EU players should have very playable ping on US East. I'll be on to invite any characters who need it when the servers are back up and through most the day, message Rahsun. Our most active hours tend to be Saturday nights where we've had a full alpha squad with some spilling over into beta squad. We use various strats depending on what players who are online prefer to play. Follow the directions of the squad leader if you're in the squad, but anyone can be squad leader.

as long as you can get over the "cheap-to-play" hurdle it's a great experience
As a PS1 exclusive beta vet,
I disagree with your disagreement. The game isn't similar at all.
A lot of cool stuff from PS1 is just plain gone. The past few times I logged in, I just joined a giant platoon and ghost cap shit - because that's what everyone is doing for certs. You can't set up a good defense, and there's no incentive to defend in the first place. There is no real CE or anything. Infiltrators only have a temporary cloak. They don't infiltrate anything. Medics just want you to die so they can farm exp. They even want to res you to 5 HP so you can die asap and they can res you again.
Almost all the fighting takes place outdoors which means vehicles reign supreme. You never know where anyone is going because there's no lattice system. This game has no depth at all. Gen drops? Nope... Gal drops period? ....nope. Max crash? Nope... Infiltrators? Nope... just snipers who can temporarily cloak. The bases are a joke. No cont locks so your achievement of capping an entire continent is pretty much nothing. No sanc.
Then you play and get these 'upgrades' that are sidegrades. There's no sense of accomplishing anything. The game is totally dumbed down and shallow compared to PS1.
PS2 does two things better - firing weapons and graphics. Everything else is worse, imo.
If you were really a PS1 exclusive vet, you should know that the majority of your complaints about features are features that weren't in game at release (at least not in the same form). Base trading was one of the biggest complaints, lattice was non existent until the end of beta and had to be redone multiple times months/years after release, and their functionality was actually one of the top complaints of the game at the time (hence being reworked multiple times). You say you played that long, but you don't remember all the people who said the game was so much more fun back in beta pre-lattice? That was debated for a long time, albeit not as bad as the SWG pre-debates.
You say theres no incentive to defend, and went even further to claim you "can't setup a good defense", but I've been in many squads that choose to defend and set ourselves up accordingly, and make a crap load of certs in the process. Try playing with coordinated squads (usually the ones led by PS1 vets) and you will find them defending very often. Considering the difference in scoring, compared to PS1 ~1month after release, there's actually more incentive to defend than there was then.
Nor were the tactics you mentioned integrated in to the metagame so early on. It's silly to complain about no advanced tactics when it's so early people haven't viably integrated ANY tactics in to this game yet. Most of the people playing are noobs to the series - that's the real reason why you don't see the depth of advanced tactics. BTW, many tactics you listed are still possible and viable, just done in different ways. Gal/gen drops for example. Heres a hint: Try doing it as other classes than infiltrator.
Most of your other complaints are due to not being used to different balance. But you show an obvious lack of experimentation if you really think all the things you listed aren't possible.
Is the game "shallow" compared to PS1 that has been patched for 9 years after release? Obviously, that's expected. But if you compare the depth of PS1 and PS2 at release and the comparison of depth is very close (as well as the game itself is very similar to release PS1), and it can be argued that PS2 has more depth than PS1 at release, considering the various improvements over the first.
Fucking hackers. I was at Crossroad Watchtowers shooting across to The Crown, i was taking constant damage from somewhere. It killed me once, and i saw it being a Anti-Vehicle Phalanx turret. Figured must be my mistake.
Spawned a new Magrider, went up and THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THE THREE TURRETS UP. And i was still taking constant exact same damage as the phalanx turret! He didnt miss a single shot at all. Its like my magrider turret goes up a bit and my vehicle starts taking damage.
In other words that fucker is shooting at me from the 4th turret, THROUGH the crown. Ruined my day

So after hearing about the Ultimate Empire Showdown with TotalBiscuit, I'm definitely gonna get this game. I know nothing about it though, so you guys will have to help me out. What server should I join, how do I join with the TL guild, and what class should I play? I have a good amount of fps experience, would like to play whatever we need most.

There's posts on this page about what server to be on, and how to join. The core classes are heavy assault and combat medic so you should at least be comfortable with playing one of those.

It's all in the OP.
As a Canadian, you most likely want to join the US east or US West outfits. I think the one on Mattherson is the most active TL outfit.
About classes to play, that most likely will change a lot since it will vary depending on the situation. I love the Light Assault but when dealing with enemy tanks, i switch to Heavy Assault. When driving or gunning a vehicle, i switch to Engineer. When there is a lot of aircraft, i switch to MAX, etc. You can play all roles decently even without certs (upgrades), so switching dynamically doesn't really put you behind at all. Even with vehicles, the default loadouts are ok with the exception of maybe aircraft, which require a few certs before you can really use them (Decoy Flares).
As your first certs, i recommend getting nanoweave armor level 1 for every class. It costs only 1 cert (= 250 XP = ~2.5 kills) and increases you health by 10% so you can't really go wrong with it.
While you are downloading/installing, i recommend checking out this guide from TB:
You can also check out the Planetside2 Youtube channel. It has a lot of Videos about navigating, upgrades, outfits, bases, etc.

My advice would be to try out all the classes and vehicles, perhaps spend a day with each, to see which one you enjoy playing. After you got a decent idea of what you like playing you can start dropping some certs into that class or vehicle. I suspect what class is needed more depends on your server and faction, but I think you'll always find some way to be useful no matter what class you choose.
As pointed out the standard loadout for most things is good enough that if you're needed to play a class outside your preferred role you will still be able to do so decently without dropping any certs into it. The exception may be some vehicles where you might feel quite handicapped without certain certs, but chances are you wont ever really need to use those.
The one thing I would probably recommend anyone to cert into, regardless of the class they play, is the engineers repair tool. Chances are at some point you will have to drive some kind of vehicle, and that vehicle is most likely going to take damage from something. Being able to repair it faster is really handy. There's also always plenty of stuff around to repair: other peoples vehicles, turrets, maxes, terminals, generators etc. It's not required to cert into, but I find it really helpful.

First of all, you are assuming I am comparing release PS2 to release PS1. Since PS1 was Sony's first time trying a game like this, obviously it was going to take some experimentation and time to get things right. Since this is Planetside 2, they have had what, several years to include the right things from PS1? Yet many of those things are not in Planetside 2. If you develop something for several years, why would you release it before including a lot of things that should be in there? Why wait to make the game really good? I certainly had more fun playing beta and early release PS1 than I have playing beta and early release PS2.
PS2 just is not fun for me. Now, if they make some changes that they have said they will make - perhaps many more people, including myself, will enjoy the game. For the people who like it, great - but for me personally, it seems shallow, boring, and pointless. I hope they improve it so that I have a game to play when I'm bored, but I'm not counting on it.
