I lag in Planetside 2 in giant battles, I get about 25 frames per second tops in big battles, while I get 45+ in a normal base. Now I was wondering if someone can help me find out what's the issue? My specs pass the ''recommended specs'' of PS2, except for my RAMI have a HD Radeon 6970 AMD Phenom II X6 @ 2.8Ghz 4GB of RAM (2x2GB) ASrock 870 Extreme3 I run Windows 7 Ultimate at 64 bits, too. Does anyone have a clue what might be bottlenecking me? I was thinking RAM, but does it really matter for the FPS I'm getting? Even at low settings I get these framedrops.

Planetside 2 is a very cpu based game and you don't have a very good CPU.

I have a Phenom II x4 at 3.8GHz, and have trouble keeping a framerate above 30 fps at larger confrontations. There is also a memory leak, which will reduce performance as you play. You can try getting more RAM and/or overclocking, but I am not sure how far either will get you. There is also supposed to be a performance patch in January.

PS2 is not very optimized at the moment, it has a lot of FPS issues even for high-end systems. Press Alt-F to see if you are CPU or GPU bound. If you are CPU bound, it helps to disable shadows in the ini file (Value 0 which you can't set ingame). If you are GPU bound, stuff like reducing the render distance and general graphics quality will help.

Get at least another 2gb of RAM, its dirt cheap so get 4 more if you can, thats about all you'll need really. If you can splash out its always nicer to get the same RAM ( not necessarily same make, just same BUS sizes etc ), and have it arranged properly for dual channel support (usually colour coded), its not going to make a huge difference though so dont prioritize that. I wouldn't be surprised if that helped a bit, but not enough as your cpu is ooooold, get an i5 3970K or something similar, they're good, presumably you'll be buying a new mobo, I'd avoid ASRock personally, they aren't reliable and they aren't as good as manufacturers like ASUS or MSI.

I earned around 400 today, and it felt like an off day for me as far as my performance. Try running with us on Mattherson.

Most infantry weapon upgrades are more or less sidegrade weapons. Better for particular things but worse at others. The defaults are all pretty average at everything. Barring the snipers from TR and VS though. NC bolt shot one shots. Default for VS and TR are semi autos and require multiple shots. That'd be the only real straight forward "upgrade." Depending on how you like to snipe.

There are a lot of very essential upgrades that are 100-, such as nanomite armor and utilities for both infantry and vehicles. The certs you earn should go towards unlocking those. You don't really need to unlock any new weapons because for most classes, the one you get is the best for general purposes. You will need to either get a second flak gun on the Max or the guided missile on the heavy to shoot down aircraft well, but you can just depend on teammates to do that for you.

Apparently, I cannot move more than a snail's pace unless I drop my gun and run forward, and that's also kind of slow. In order to hit anybody, I have to stand completely still and cover half the screen with my gun. Half the time, the bad guys are wearing funky colors, and I can't win a firefight. It's just "Oh hey he's wearing 30% blue, he must be NC" and then 1.5 seconds later I get to wait 10 seconds to respawn, then spend a minute or two running back to wherever. Is this how Call of Duty plays or something? I can't for the life of me understand why they'd do this... Also, when is everyone on?

If you're attempting to run across the map from hex to hex, you're doing it wrong. Spawn a vehicle instead. Half the game is managing the logistics of transporting/spawning friendly troops. As for enemy identification, enemies have a red indicator above their head, or no indicator at all. Friendlies will ALWAYS have a non-red indicator (blue for default, green/orangish/some other colors for squad/platoon members). What class are you playing? Some classes are rather disadvantaged in straight up combat. Since the time to kill is very short, positioning is key. If you can catch the enemy unaware, you can kill him 90% of the time.

In cod its a time to kill of like 0.3 seconds . In Planetside its about 1.5 seconds. WAY longer to kill. Characters are alot smaller in planetside aswell. Harder to hit

As it is for almost everybody the bottle neck in big battles is the cpu. I have an i5 760 and the best I can get in big battles while flying is 20-25 fps. I hope they can improve the optimisation, but in the other hand it's understandable that the game is ressource intensive. I mean, having a battle with hundreds of players, explosions everywhere, reavers dogfighting mosquitoes comes to a price. Concerning the price of weapons, yes they are really expensive. However you can be vert effective with the basics weapons. The only one that are really mandatory I feel are AA missiles on ESF and rocket pods. Double burster max also makes a big difference. However you can be very effective with light assault, heavy assault or infiltrator with a reasonnable cert investment.
