Absolutely disagree, I loved the Oblivion lock picking, too many games have it too easy. I got to the point with the Oblivion system where I could almost do it with my eyes closed and it felt like a real acomplishment after how hard I found it at first. (I'm not mistaking a higher lockpick skill, I'm talking about on new characters n shiznit)

Yeah....but shouldn't it be required to have a high skill in something to be good at it? Let's say there is a mini-game for magic. If you do well, you cast a more powerful spell. Gaining levels just makes the mini-game easier. So that means once I master the mini-game, I can cast spells like a master wizard even though I'm level 3 in magic. That's mine and I think a lot of peoples' beef with the lockpicking system.

I loved Morrowind AND Oblivion, and to be honest I wasn't let down or anything by Oblivion (even though a couple things MW had I'd rather have). But skill mini-games are something that needs to be thought of carefully, as to not make it frustrating, still have the player feel like he's doing something, but also have skill really matter.

P.s: I was one of the people stalking on the Bethesda forums, all worried about the engine. That twitter post though....... FFFFUUUUUUCCCKKKK YEAH
Seriously?

Some people actually find it easier to do the lockpicking with their eyes closed because there are audio cues you can use to not lose if you choose.

Apparently this is in the newest EGM from a Q and A with Todd Howard:

Q- "Clearly what your working on now is for this console lifecycle.

A- (abbreviated) "...this cycle is going to go on for a very long time. Fallout 3 technically is far superior to Oblivion, what we can draw on the screen, what the game looks like. We did find after Fallout 3, that hey, theres alot we can still do yet, and we rewrote the entire graphics and gameplay stuff. Technically, what were doing now, when we show you, youll almost think its a new console."

On animation:

TH: "...when it comes to the worlds we build were one of the best. ....When it comes to the people and how they move and act its not on the same level as the worlds we make- weve put alot of time into addressing that."

So perhaps we will finally see halfway decent third person animations!

EDIT:
Also, I wonder what the beast races will look like since they change so much between games. I didn't like the Argonian look in Oblivion at first but it has grown on me, perhaps because the female Argonian voice actor is probably the best one, she sounds so kind and warm and motherly.

If the engine is id Tech 5 we will all have ruined pants soon.

Tears. Tears of happiness. I'm not just happy because I'm hyping myself up to something that isn't possible, I'm happy because anything better is better than one of my personal favorite games ever. That's really really good.

Ohhh, I like proficiency with spells. Just like after certain amounts of acrobatics you can attack while jumping, and running doesn't take up stamina after enough aerobics.

I thought that was a cool edition to Oblivion, such as the better sneak attacks, power attacks, less encumberance, alchemy perks and such. It was a little weird though that some of those perks you could get through fortification and some you couldn't... Also I hope there is a way to sell things that cost more than 1500 gold. Maybe an auction house or a really rich collector.

So glad this has finally been announced.

I really hope they have open cities and reimplement levitation which was sorely missing from Oblivion (I think those changes were basically made to enable lazier game design than Morrowinds). Pretty cautious on any talk of a 'new engine' and improvements arriving from that. Bethesda is known for overhyping and underdelivering. Still they're really the only ones even attempting games of this type of scope anymore so I'll take what I can get.

Next year is going to be awesome for games.

The problem with open cities and by extension levitation, is that unless the new engine is extremely efficient, it will blow up your computer. This is all depending on how good your computer is, but for a lot of people (not myself) it would up the new system requirements by a lot. In Morrowind it didn't tax the computer like it does now for the same effect.

This brings tears of joy to my eyes. I worked on both games (not a brag, it was a slave grind for managers that didn't appreciate very much other than glad-handing people into glowing reviews), and a large % of the team thought neither game was any good. The coders they let handle the important game systems (combat, AI, leveling) were the whining tenured people who only made the games awful. And re: the reviews, if Fallout 3 gets a 90+ Metacritic score, what should Mass Effect 2 get? 150+?

Lol like they need to glad hand anybody when I'd give it 150+ as it is. Haven't played Mass Effect though; I better not if it will make me hate TES.

I said Fallout 3 though Oblivion was OK, but only if you played it on PC and really on then if you modded it to make it less dumb about a great many things.

I'm so looking forward to this game, hope my computer can handle it (Although it can play most games out atm so hopefully.. fingers crossed)

Cant wait for this to come out, as well as for some more info to come out about it, Hoping to see a combination of Morrowind and Oblivion, as both games have there strengths and weaknesses, so fixing those up would make a great RPG! Taking the good things from both and putting them together would be a good start

If it wasn't for overhauls and mods I would have never played Oblivion. Morrowind was much better.

Hopefully they go back to everything morrowind, skills and everything, and port it to the new graphics engine they are using. That should be the base for the new game.

No autoleveling mobs, maybe fast travel between only major cities. Give me back levitation and jumping, make magic casters more viable at low levels (it's fucking impossible to kill anything with 10 damage on touch spells). Improve the magic casting, there are so many additions they can add now (longer and shorter casting animations to simulate a "cast time".), one and two handed spell casting to make a mix between oblivion fast casting and morrowind casting and weapon switching. I want more spells, more skills (that are useful, unlike enchanting), not less! I also enjoy the crippling of limbs from fallout, and it would be amazing if they could add that to the game some how so it isn't just face rolling into enemies and clicking really fast. More spells like blind and confused that alter your interactions, anything that makes combat more interactive. Hopefully they will do some voice acting, and reading, because I really don't like listening to the same 10 voice actors using different voices. And I want an epic storyline! Oblivions was boring and short.

They have many of the great beginnings, and many good improvements they can make. I would enjoy seeing what other people think could be improved.

edit: oh and change back stealing, how the hell does anyone know what's stolen? I like the morrowind version where people know when something is stolen and will attack anyone selling any item of that type.

I pretty much agree with most of this post.

Oblivion was the single-most disappointment I had in gaming after playing the freaking awesome Morrowind.
I spent probably more hours on Morrowind than on any other game, even got the collectors edition of oblivion, just to be majorly disappointed.
I don't even care if they do voice-acting or just give me walls of text, they have been the better solution to me in Morrowind (even though they were repetitive, it added much more atmosphere to the game than those little things you could ask in Oblivion.)
Also missed Levitation and Jump, bring 'em back! :/
(Entchanting was good though, at least in MW, don't know how/if they changed it in Oblivion?)

Oh shit.....looks intense!

I don't know about all the hate for Oblivion....but I guess I can see why people would dislike it. When I played it I didn't remember anything terrible about it.
