I'm level 33 atm, with legendary daedrik armor and weapons, max/nearmax smithing/enchanting and a sickton of good items. Once you're out of mana, change clothes in the middle of the battle, and 1-3 hit everything with your swords. Items create way too much bonuses and easily compensate any missing skills. So what I do atm is bartering and makin' moar gold. I got close to 100% better prices and close to 100k gold. Most of the time, I can "rob" a smith of all his money by buying ingots and a weapon/armor. Buy that armor, make it better using the smithsskill, sell for a profit. And then, the smith has the weapon back, without the "legendary upgrade", so you buy it again, make it better, sell for profit again until they run out of money or ingots. I'm playing on Master difficulty with my conjure/archer breton, and man things get seriously hard yet fun at the same time.

being made archmage after enrolling in mage college a few days prior edit: why would dragons ever land when fighting a human? it's not like they get tired or can't breathe fire and cast spells. their talking alone is supposed to be enough to kill people (wouldn't everything they say be a continuous stream of Shouts?) but instead they just present their snouts for a good bashing every 30 seconds

What am I going to do? Just sit there as a mage and engage in hand to hand combat? The fact that no enemy in the game seems to be able to catch a sprinting char makes kiting way too strong. Well...give me an example of a game like Skyrim where the AI is better? Sad fact is that AI in most video games sucks balls. You're complaining about computer games, not about Skyrim. If you are desperate for competition you shouldn't be playing singleplayer RPGs... (Although I will admit they should make an -ultra- difficulty with things like hard caps on bonuses to skills, enemies who have spells like lower resist, enemies having 3x as much HP and 3x as much damage, etc.) You want a list of FPS'swith better enemy AI? FEAR FarCry COD Deus Ex Half-Life Having enemies that will never hit you with any amount of cover usage/kiting but if they do kill you in one hit is a sign of reallly bad AI. I literally haven't been hit by an enemy in the last hour of play, that wouldn't be possible in any other major FPS title. Ok. How many of these games are expansive non-linear swords and shields quasi-medieval hack and slash FPSs? Hmm yes...on closer inspection...0%. So none of those examples work. Second point. None of those games have particularly good AIs. They are all batshit poor really. Evidence is the way they play in comparison to the way humans play. The only reason you think they are challenging is that the enemies have guns. You think Deus Ex would be hard if all the enemies just had batons and the occasional bow + arrow? If 100% quality AI is human level, and 0% is a rock...I would say all games we have now are between 1-2%. But don't worry! If you hate the Skyrim AI you can always go and play all of those other non-linear swords and shields quasi-medieval hack and slash FPSs!!! + Show Spoiler + Ehhhh it's not that bad to criticize the AI. I understand how hard it is to program quality AI in a game as expansive as this, but honestly it could use some serious improvement. Right now it feels like I'm fighting armies of zombies. You are a random townsperson inhabiting a bar. A stranger walks in and after an argument with the owner, starts firing lightning bolts out of her fingers and incinerates two guards, probably blasting their remains and boiled blood all across the walls of the establishment along with a horrendous crack of thunder and the crisp stench of fresh ozone. Your next move is to: A: Ohmygod she just murdered bob and holycrap lightning and oh god run for your life!!! B: Draw your dagger, make a casual snide remark, and walk towards the mysterious stranger. Or wild animals. Getting attacked by a single wolf while riding around on my horse is simply a nuisance. The wolf then fights to the death after being burned alive by FIRE, which you know, animals usually are rather scared of. How much cooler would it be if they hunted in packs, watched/followed you for a bit, just staying out of range until all of a sudden you get jumped by 4-5 of them? I've killed numerous giants/mammoths without even taking damage, as they just can't hit you. It's not a skillful affair, just monotonous. Shoot them with a spell over and over again until they're about to hit you, then run to the side and past them. They'll miss every time. Rinse and repeat. Giving them more HP and more damage as difficulty levels increase doesn't change the fact that they'll still *never* hit you, so all you're doing is prolonging a boring fight. Just enemy AI in general is so dull. Obviously zombies or draughts or whatever they're called should be mindless lumbering idiots shambling towards you with no regard for their own safety. But bandits? Come on, show some humanity. Don't walk casually in a single file line towards me. Attack in groups, or at least in pairs, or try to flank/surround. Archers standing totally still in plain sight shooting at me, (and occasionally hitting their friends), while the melee guys just walk straight at me mindlessly gets dull. I hate that the mechanics for a fight are super simple, but the number of attacks required to kill something is high. I would so much more prefer to need to make decisions in battle, or directional attacks/blocks/specials or anything that made combat a little more dynamic. Sometimes dragons get confused and just NEVER FREAKING LAND... EVER. I had one dragon follow me for like 10+ minutes. It never came down to land and attack me, and just flew around in circles above my head just outside of range. I couldn't hurt it, and couldn't fast travel due to being in combat. Very frustrating. Also if this game has taught me anything it's that bears are far scarier than dragons. Plenty of my deaths have been just not noticing a bear and then getting mauled in like 1 hit lol. I put your point in a spoiler just because it's long. Not that it's a bad point. And to sobek, I'd like to disassociate myself with the comments of the guy who flamed you on the previous page for your opinion. But my point is guys...let's be fair. What else is there? I am fully aware of the lacking AI in video games. But I have never seen a video game that is even remotely realistic in straight out combat let alone INTERACTION. AI is the cutting edge of technology and it will be a long time before we are remotely close to something that could be considered real. We are, right now, at this point in the development of humanity, only a small step ahead of when we were driving carts with horses. Just go with the flow. We are neither at the beginning nor are we at the end. Sorry to get all philosophical, but games are a huge part of my life. I have grown to accept and love their limitations, as much as I'd like them to be exceeded. What other game can you rely on to give you the feelings that TES games give you? I, probably like you, experience first hand the transition from 2d to 3d. And it was *GLORIOUS*. The feeling of my first real, good-quality and well done 3d game (beyond the fake 3d and the poorly implemented/ limited 3d) was GTA 3. By god, it was absolutely insane. It blew my mind. Personally, I am still perfectly able to imagine what it was like when Duke 3d was the closest I could get to 3d. I remember playing Doom with my dad and loving it. When I look back and then think how far we've come...I honestly have to say I'm just really proud and happy to be enjoying these sorts of games now. I can't be bothered to think about the limitations in technology because it is SO MUCH MORE than I was experiencing when I was a kid. I accept that your points would be very useful and valid in a game design meeting to talk about how best to spend resources, and I agree with all of them and have many to add myself, but personally I think they have spent resources in designing this game very well. I enjoy how big the game is, and how much time clearly went into all the small things.

Do axes, swords, and maces of the same quality have the same DPS? As in, if I constantly swing a steel axe for 5 seconds, will it do as much total damage as swinging a steel sword for 5 seconds?

I really only notice it on bandits with low hp who die anyway in 3 hits. I read somewhere that it does 1-3 damage for 3-6 seconds or so and that it doesn't stack. Since you are in melee range and hit each second anyway it is like your weapon does 1-3 more damage. Plus it doesn't work on enemies that can't bleed.

Anyways, the AI is better than oblivion's, and most of the quests are. (I absolutely hate the new Dark Brotherhood, and want to kill them all so badly, and the thieves guild is less noble and more "pack of thugs" which annoys me.)

+ Show Spoiler + First to make it absolutely clear I'm playing on the medium difficulty as a mage, and I make no guarentee of this applying to harder difficulty modes or character set ups. I will be trying a second character as hard as I can set it next, and I'll report back on that then. For now I'd just be guessing so I'm writing this from the experience of Adept mode Mage. So I just fought my first ~40 type dragon and damn those things have a lot of health....and the ability to chew you up and throw you off a cliff while you still have around 200 health... But still, I have to say as much as I still enjoy the occasional dragon fight the ai is too easy to beat on them. Avoiding their attacks, especially with the rediculously overpowered Impact ability in the Destruction tree (more on that later) and the fact that standing to the side of them basically makes you invincible. The increase in health and damage isn't accompanied with new abilities or better ai, it's just a case of "now it takes a little longer". Again, it's still fun, but they haven't held the same charm since around level 15. If you've played the game up until your 2nd Blood Dragon game, tell me you don't just see them as "I hope it lands somewhere I can hit it soon, some nice cash in those bones!". Tell me I'm just being cynical. So on to my second biggest issue, which I've begun addressing already - Mages. The Mage system in this game is frankly awesome, and you can feel really powerful. Would maybe be cool if you could focus even more heavily in the necromancer side of things (I want a legion I tell you!), but besides that I have no real complains except when it comes to the scaling of the mana mechanic and the Destruction tree. So first and as mentioned earlier, the Impact perk. This is a perk which will literally temporarily stun any opponent, of any size, doing anything, 100% of the time. If you've not experimented with this tree yet, think about that for a second. It's rediculous. I can literally take any enemy of any size, at any time, in any place 1 on 1 because all I have to do in the absolute worst case scenario is hit them with a dual cast spell they're not resistant too, wait for the stagger back to finish so they're able to move again and then do it again. Usually though an enemy staggered and thus having no way to defend themselves is going to die in that time though so it doesn't get to waiting for them to get back on their feet. The second issue with Mages, while more general to the whole "class" (for lack of a better word) is magicka regen scaling, especially with mage gear. From 1-10 ish it sucks hard. From 10-20 it's well balanced. By the time you reach level 40 (only around half way to what I can apparently reach?) you are literally not going to run out of mana on all but the busiest of encampments or the absolute toughest of enemies - and even if you do one of your insta restore 150 mana pots will get you back in the fight in a moment, and given how rarely you use them and how often you find them it's not even an issue. That said, simply avoiding the next attack your opponent throws out is probably more than sufficient time to regen enough mana to destroy everything that might have somehow survived your first 400 mana. Speaking of mana... ...the spell system is completely ass backwards. On a per mana point basis the one up from base spells are thus far the most efficient by far, and are still doing more than enough damage fast enough for that to not be a concern. And yes, that does take in to accound having the correct "reduces cost" perks for the level of spell, though I'm yet to reach the Masters perk at 100 skill (4 off!) so maybe it'll make sense then. For the moment I'm literally still one shotting enemies with dual cast Firebolt on a regular basis, though the occasional stronger foe might take 2. By comparison why would I waste more mana on unreliable and less damage-per-cost spells, for the chance an aoe hit that usually won't catch anything at all? The simple answer is, I haven't been and unless something changes there's literally no reason to. This just feels broken. Questing, bar the occasional frustrating bug (npc's under floors, quests bugged in quest log and hand in's needing to be remembered or looked up - not as part of the quest, but simply standard turn in's) is actually still quite fun. I've cleared a crap ton of dungeons and discovered over 150 locations so far and none of it has been the same or felt repetetive in and of itself. Seriously impressive given how much I've played. On the subject of questing - the civil war is a side quest. I mean, I get that in terms of playing the game, but that puts the enormous nature of the game in to perspetive where you taking a side and struggling to unite Skyrim is just a side quest. Also the Daedric involvement in the game is really well done, with the exception of one of them lifting you so far in to the air as to kill the graphical immersion in moments but that really is a minor complaint compared to how well done they are. Companions are pretty good. They're good at dying to traps. They're good at blocking doorways. They're good at giving away your position. They're good at getting lost. They're *really* good at running in front of you as you attempt to launch a spell at your opponent. But seriously, I actually like my companion. She's got some really nice fully enchanted Ebony gear and is more than capable of holding her own in combat without me constantly having to make sure she doesn't die, and she seems to switch weapons intelligently as needed and apart from her minor issues I've mentioned I wouldn't be without her at this point. So finally on to small general problems. The controls still feel a little under polished sometimes, especially in chat, though having played with them for a hell of a long time now they do seem to work fairly well on mouse and keyboard. Quest NPC's that are no longer ever going to be needed should be killable. Especially if the game gives the player the instruction to seek out and kill them. Convincing yourself not to exploit your way over or round a mountain through wall walking is actually a harder task than exploiting it. Chat should either be immediately cancelable or not be allowed to be forced on you during combat - EVER. To conclude this list though, a wish rather than a problem. I really want to be able to see how much weight each section of my inventory is using. Would make remembering tuff at vendors/making space/clearing potions a lot easier. Now this post seems to come off a bit negative but anything I've not critised is, in my opinion, not worth being critical of. Overall this is still a really great game that I'm still going to be playing tomorrow and probably for a significantly longer period in to the future.

If you can swap out your shield for a Ward spell from your restoration skills when you're against mages and use that as you would a normal shield (though be careful as it will drain mana) you'll find you can drastically reduce incoming magic damage. Also, enchanting gear, or purchasing item already enchanted so that you can maybe get some magic resistance might help too. Finally, quite early in the Alteration tree if you have any skill, it has a perk for 10/20/30% base resistance - even the 10% is quite substantial. And if all else fails, magic resistance potions.

I get nerd chills just thinking about how awesome it would be to play as Richard running around with the sword of truth and following the books story. Or being Rand Al'Thor the Dragon Reborn...oh man something like that would be so amazing. I would love to see the devs do this themselves but I would settle for a third party mod but I can see how they could make a ton of money from selling DLCs that modify the game to follow popular fantasy book stories. Btw 44 hours played currently and I really love the game and the story so far. I just can't stop thinking how much cooler it would be to play out some of my favorite book series stories as well.
