While the East is the more defensively-loaded conference, that doesn't make it easier to have a great record. Whether a team wins via offense or defense, or at least a greater emphasis in the former than the latter, a win is still a win. Just look at the Spurs this season. They've gone from an elite defensive team who can score when it needs to, to an elite offensive team who can get stops when it needs to. Despite that switch, the team is playing as well as it has in the past 4-5 years, if not better. The goal of each game is to score more than your opponent, and it's not any easier by focusing on offense or defense. Further, it has been easier to have a great record in the East than in the West for the past few seasons, not the other way around. The East has, for a while now, had only a few elite teams, and a lot of okay-to-terrible teams. Since teams play more games against opponents in their conference, it has actually made it easier for the top East teams to build up great records, as opposed to the West where there have been fewer crappy teams to boost their records with. I'm surprised that you remember otherwise, because this was a fairly well-known and widely-accepted opinion of the two conferences for a while now. This season isn't that different in the East, as the disparity in quality between the top and bottom of the East remains pretty large. There are six teams over .600, with a huge drop-off to the next best record (Pacers .424). There are seven teams that are sub-.400. Compare that to the West where there are seven teams over .600, three teams in the .500-.599 range, two teams in the mid-.400 range (Memphis .472 and Houston .444), and only three teams under .400. However, it can no longer be argued that a lot of undeserving teams are making it into the playoffs on the East as it could in previous seasons. The East has improved this season with the Bulls and the Knicks becoming much better. Last season it was CLE, BOS and ORL at the top, ATL in the middle, with the rest not being considered legitimate threats by anyone (MIA, MIL, CHA, and CHI). This season, MIA has replaced CLE at the top to join BOS and ORL, ATL has been joined in the middle by CHI and NY (at least at this point.. CHI could arguably join the top if Noah comes back healthy in time for the playoffs and they can upgrade at SG), and only the last two spots are questionable and likely to be filled by undeserving teams. | ||
