@the whole Bukkit/Spoutcraft thingy, coming from someone who has no clue about this at all: The only other "big" minecraft server with loads of plugins that I know of (and I think they still run less than you plan to) is pwegoserver and for them, they usually just keep the entire thing on the old version till everything works fine. Don't you think it would be possible for us to stay in our little functioning 1.0 bubble until the whole shitstorm settled and then fix it within a week of work or so? Also, honestly, if a dev is mia for 3 months I would not expect him to pop up any time soon. =S

Also, honestly, if a dev is mia for 3 months I would not expect him to pop up any time soon. =S This is what I did with the old server. I kept it on older versions of Minecraft because plugins took months to update. However, everyone got mad at me and quit playing because they all wanted the new versions ASAP. Most servers with the amount of traffic we have/had will pull in anywhere from $1,000 to as much as $3,000 per month in donations. They have paid full-time dev teams to update plugins and create their own and thus can update within days. I was barely able to get enough donations to keep the server running, let alone pay anyone to code for me. My only options in most cases are to a) Wait for the plugins to update or b) Stop using them. You're right in that the ideal situation is to just hold off on updating until things are smoother, but unfortunately the overwhelming majority of players here on TL are pretty rabid when it comes to having the latest and greatest patch up (even if it means a completely unstable and broken server) so I'm trying to compromise as best I can. I mentioned earlier that we had a system in place to minimize patching issues once the server is live... basically there are two ways. The first is that we're only trying to use extremely high-profile plugins made by people who have been in the community since it started a year ago. Unfortunately, this still backfired on us as two of the plugins that don't function properly (Citizens and iConomy) are two of the largest plugins out there with two of the oldest Bukkit devs out there. Ironically, the smaller no-name plugins seem to be more reliable -_- The second thing is/was Spout. The newer versions have a dropdown menu that lets you select any version of Minecraft to play (including the old alpha versions and etc). Eventually Spout was going to be mandatory because of custom entity support and as such we'd be able to stay on older patches and people could still play on other servers, too (the old issue was that you had to manually change your files... so people were upset they had to change files to play on our server or their personal servers and etc). With the current versions of Spout that is a non-issue so future patching issues can be mostly avoided altogether. Doesn't really work for the server launch, though. So in short, yes... the ideal situation is to hold back on version updates. However, I tried this before and nobody was happy with it so *shrug*.' As for the mob spawning... we still can't figure out what's going on with the name-hating plugin. My best guess is that something got corrupted somewhere, though I have no idea where since the issue occurs even with fresh config/jar files for the plugin and all other plugins disables. The only culprit left is Bukkit itself. But, who cares. It seems to be working fine now so I'm not gonna bother reading into it anymore.

Some things to note: Expect some restarts in the next few days as I tweak settings like mob health/damage, plugin updates, etc. These should take no more than about 30 seconds when they happen. The hardware *should* support up to 70 players, but you never really know. If there's any lag let me know. Boats have been heavily modified in the following ways: 1) Boats no longer break 2) Boats are no longer craftable 3) Boats are purchased from the harbor using ingame currency. This is sorta implemented but because iConomy isn't updated for 1.0 yet I haven't gotten it working with the mob spawning plugin yet. IE, mobs don't yet drop coin. In short, it'll probably be a few days before boats are up for sale. The reason boats have been changed is because of how exploration works on the server. You can get to nearly all areas by walking. Most islands are zoned for stronger mobs and other purposes, so there's no reason to go to them until later in your gameplay (when you have some gear and stuff). In addition boats are pretty rough on the server hardware, so having a bunch of abandoned boats all over the map just isn't a great idea. In short, boats are now a one-time-purchase item that will never break and you basically use it as you would a mount in an MMO. However, you will not currently be able to afford them just yet. Minecarts are NOT allowed to be placed on public rails. If you didn't make the track yourself, you do not put a cart on it. Also, please use caution when crossing a track. If you get ran over by a train I'm not going to restore your character. Lastly, I have updated post 3 of this thread with a few additional rules and will be making a proper rules list shortly.

From 1.9 to 1.0 they stayed on 1.9 till about 2-3 days ago. Their population dropped by about 80% (!) during this timeframe. However, they stick to the policy of waiting dispite all the bitching because a) The remaining 20% are usually highly active and loyal people who care more about their #1 server than the most recent notch patch and b) Once the updates are finally done most of the 80% who originally dropped playing on the server are back within 2-3 weeks. Keeping in mind that their server is more built around few but select uber builders and not so much on "having fun with some buddys" (which is more what TL is like imo)... if people love the server they'll be fine with staying on old patches for it imo. <3 ... However, for now let's enjoy this finally. =D FOR SOME REAL TALK - THIS SERVER NEEDS WAY MORE HYPE I have 2 uberprojects in mind for my current minecraft fun times, if people wanna help I think both are achievable on this server. (The last project I was involved was the exterior of this http://imgur.com/a/4gPAu piece on the reddit server. Purely building though, the design was entirely done by the redditor "Bluemanze".) #1 a copy of the cheops pyramid, including the interior. Considering this would mean about 40k stacks (yes, I said stacks) of sand/sandstone if you would do it in some massive way, I'm currently trying to figure out whether a "hollow" pyramid where it just will look as if it is massive using double layers all over the place is realistic or whether I'll have to scale it down makes the most sense. For this it would be easy to help once it's started but the real trouble here are the materials/building site. (230 blocks baselength if it would be 1:1 ^.^) #2 a medieval ubertown, including thick walls, roads, castle, homes & shops and what else people who would want to help can think of. This would be way more complicated when it comes to design & planning, but probably also way more fun for people to help with since it there will almost always be some small possible things to do here and there. In both cases, the goal will be to create one of the most impressive places on the server in the long run. Poll: Pyramids or medieval ubertown? Stone+Wood+Minecraft = Castles - nuff said. (6) PYRAMIDS!! OVER 9000x SANDSTONES AND ONE BED! (2) 8 total votes Your vote: Pyramids or medieval ubertown? (Vote): PYRAMIDS!! OVER 9000x SANDSTONES AND ONE BED!

Edit: Not sure if you didn't link it because of serverload or because you forgot it Serejai, since you threw it around freely on the server I'll just put it up here, too: http://173.53.106.115:8123/ - official & realtime server map. <3

For those who want in on it, feel free to start help with some places where I already put up signs (Harbor/Lighthouse). It's located south-east of the "official harbour" and you will be enjoying a beautiful view over the ships there from our future lighthouse. <3 Edit: Not sure if you didn't link it because of serverload or because you forgot it Serejai, since you threw it around freely on the server I'll just put it up here, too: http://173.53.106.115:8123/ - official & realtime server map. <3 THIS IS SOOOO COOL. thanks, didn't know that existed. edit: unfortunately, I think this means that me and my companion Kooha will have to relocate elsewhere.

If the cost is instability we need to wait, but if it's just disabling some plugins for a bit then updating should generally happen fairly quickly. I was reading back through the forum pages before the server went down and the update delay really did kill the server. Unrelated, what is it about the other servers that result in so much more revenue? Lots of reasons that I won't get into here, but one of the big ones is that most other servers charge you $10-20 for things like /home, chest protection, etc. In addition the TL community in general just doesn't donate all that much. Take the Doctors With Borders Sheth/Destiny event. Forgive me if my numbers are wrong, but I believe there are about 200k users on TL and that charity drive raised like $30k. That's an average of 15 cents per user, and that doesn't even include any Reddit/Destiny users that aren't on TL. As far as the old Minecraft server goes, we averaged about 3 cents per player. Lower than what appears to be the TL average, but makes sense considering Minecraft is simply a time-killing sidegame to most people here. Out of the 4k+ players we had only about 30 were what I would consider dedicated in the sense that Minecraft is their primary game. Plus, I think donating to a charity is much more important than donating to a game server ![]() You can also check out the Humble Bundle donations. Pretty much 99% of the people that visit that website are there to donate, and even still if you take away the top 100 donors you're left with an average of about 19 cents per person. These people are donating 19 cents to purchase six games AND donate to charity. That makes the 15c/person average of TL that I mentioned above look incredibly generous considering those TLers didn't walk away with anything in return. You have to realize the majority of members on TL are probably college students and tossing around money isn't very high up on their priority list. We are pulling players from a Starcraft community, so Minecraft isn't generally their priority here... whereas other servers are pulling from the Minecraft community itself (official forums and whatnot). Show of hands... how many people here went to Minecon? I can all but guarantee it's under two. On other servers that number is probably much higher. It's pretty much the same thing as if minecraftforums.net made a thread about SC2 and asked for donations. Sure, they probably have a fair amount of players there but more than likely most of them are bronze-gold league and simply aren't interested in supporting it too much (ie donating to TLO or IPL4, etc). Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter. This is also why I wanted to open the previous server up to the public Minecraft community, as they tend to be more interested/committed to the game as a primary means of entertainment than we are here. I've compared numbers with multiple other server hosts and the reality of it is that this server will never be able to afford the luxuries of the public servers as long as it remains private for the TL community (as it should be). At the end of the day we covered server costs and that's all I ever expected to do. It would be nice to have a dedicated dev team but I don't see it being possible through donations alone for the reasons outlined above. TL is a great community and I've gotten a lot of support within the Minecraft sub-community itself but donations just aren't a viable means of sustained income - not here, not anywhere (even charities - you're not donating ten cents a day... you're on a payment plan). If you have a suggestion I'm all ears, though. Related, I'll reopen donations shortly once I finish setting up the donor perks on this new server. Any previous donations are carried over. The current situation is that I'm hosting this server on my personal gaming PC at the moment (which is fine because it can support up to 65-70 players) but this also means I cannot play Skyrim, TOR, DOTA2, Battlefield 3, or any of my other shiny new games. So, ideally I would like to raise some money to build a brand new server (have most of the parts, already) for this and other things (such as a home for any other TL sub-communities that may need one for streaming, VoIP, game servers (terraria, battlefield 3, etc)). That being said, this server currently costs $0/mo to run and will always cost $0/mo (barring any disasters, like my hardware crapping out) so unlike the previous server where donations were required to keep things running I don't really need any at all this time.

I remember some of the ones from the old server, but I'm not sure which still work (e.g. /home) and which ones don't (e.g. /compass). At the moment there aren't really any commands. The permission system in Bukkit is incredibly stupid and tedious so I'm still setting it up. Right now you have /sethome and /home, and nothing more. Chests/Signs/Furnaces/Dispensers will auto-protect when you make them and I'm working on adding the commands to let you give access to friends. I don't even know the entire command list myself as I had to do a last minute plugin change and I'm not familiar with the new one we're using yet.
