We used to play Magic a long time ago and were hoping to find a way to play even after we've lost our cards and are now located across the US.
Thanks!
The most popular free alternative is Magic Workstation, check the first two pages of this thread for some info on it.

but say you make a deck, do they give you free (basic) lands, and how many...
also how many (or as many as you need?) do they give in drafts?
if they don't provide you with much, how do you get more?
in mtgo they "lend" you lands for drafts, you build a deck, use add lands option, the lands are given "back" after your draft is concluded
otherwise you need to get them... they are extremely cheap and you don't need that many
God, now its like my 5th draft, my luck is incredible but jesus I suck My deck was crazy, I had like 2 revoke existence 1 shatter 1 ELSPETH TIREL (second pack :O) 1 Indomitable Archangel (1st pack) dispense justice and a bunch of other decent creatures and stuffs Didn't get anywhere ... In the second round I lost 0-2 because in the second game didn't notice I actually could kill him off after him atking w/ everything at elspeth :O
so who else is excited for mirrodin besieged? the spoilers seem really cool so far, but then again so did the SoM early spoilers and that set turned out to be a steaming pile of feces. im just pissed because i only get cards from drafting and that means ill only be getting one pack of MB every time and two packs of shitty ass SoM. oh and seems like infect is going to get a huge boost in limited. pisses me off because i hate drafting infect. its so annoying to just have to pick infect cards and then have alot of packs where its like pick 5... no playables.
Scars had a plenty of cards that see Constructed play in multiple formats; dual lands, planeswalkers, Memoricide, Arc Trail, Argentum Armor, Sword of Body and Mind, Mox Opal, Memnite, Wall of Tanglecord, Grasp of Darkness, etc. Of course there's a lot of filler and stuff that doesn't work as well as it should (Tunnel Ignus, THE answer to ramp?!?!) but overall the set is fine imo
Besieged spoilers are looking pretty good. Even if the rest of the set ends up being terrible cards, there's already stuff worth picking up from what's been spoiled already so shruggggg. So many good green spoilers though, maybe it's time for me to track down all my elves...

What my friends and I used to do was that you were allowed to draw the 7 cards as many times as you wanted (shuffle in between obv.), so you'd at least start off with a decent 7 cards. I guess that's not feasible with people who really know what they're doing, but it was a nice system for casual play.
You can rig the deck if you're playing by hand... provided you're shuffling and not some 3rd party doing it...
This works in any 52 deck cards...
just put all the cards you want in a certain section of the deck, just shuttle by sliding the cards ( in groups ) andmake sure that group is always clumped up together and you'll get what you want... ( kinda like putting dice in some oven for a few minutes...
I'm a drafting newbie (also newbie to newer sets). I just played the most insane game in draft.
I'm playing Blue/White flyers + 2 splashed arc trails. Other guy is Green/Black infect. At one point he gets Hand of the Praetors, plays a Mindslaver on me. I hold on just barely, drawing to the only out in my deck. A foil Mindslaver of my own! It's the 2nd last card in my deck, pull that baby out, force his guys into my chumpers, draw my last card with 0 cards left in deck and hit him back for lethal.
As some random newb who used to play, but wants to get back into it. Where is this best place to play? Doesn't matter if you have to pay for the program or not
Bleh 3 first round losses in a row to infect. I used to be neutral about infect but I'm starting to hate it. Deck lays down, Ichor Myr, Cyst Bear, Cyst Bear, Infiltration Lens + mediocre infect stuff and it's awful to play against. Good thing I was able to rare draft myself a Koth and Mox Opal to get tickets to continue drafting. =\

I've always wanted to try Magic, but I don't want spend a fortune on it, just want to have some basic fun every once in a month or two (or more).
Pauper doesn't cost much you can a buy 4x playset of all the commons for a set with <$10. If you want to play standard: B-R Vampires is the best aggro deck it runs about ~$80 and Valakut which is the most popular deck is pretty cheap as well.
Anybody play in the prerelease this weekend? I guess MTGO prerelease isn't for a bit longer, but this new set is pretty fun. Faction packs are silly, so much more likely to get bombs that you want (lol opening Hero of Bladehold for my RW Battle Cry prereleaase deck).
Is there any way to play without taking part in microtransactions? I'm hearing stories of people paying "only" 100 dollars for a deck, which is really what is keeping me from investing in this, I stopped playing the paper version because of the ridiculous ammounts of money needed to keep playing and was hoping that there was some kind of system (like alot of microtransaction games have) that allowed for if you just play enough it will get you there in the end, is there such a system in place because I really can't afford to fork out that much money again.
Just to take a example of what I mean, in League of Legends there is a system were you can either buy points to get skins and heroes or you can just play and you get points that will allow you to buy runes and hereos provided you play a ton of games.
To me paying for virtual cards with real money just feels wrong.
Magic Workstation allows players to build decks out of any card for free. So you can play top tournament decks without paying money for them if that's what interests you.
