Arcanum was quite the massive game and it was all good fun for a playthrough if you could close your eyes from the bugs (and hope they weren't game breaking) and from character animation. Combat you could pick between turn based just like in Fallouts or "real time", different classes worked better with different modes. Mages spamming Harm worked like a charm in real time if you hot keyed a mana pot as well, guns worked really well in turn based as well as backstabbers (very low AP cost if you did it right). Actually, dunno how you could even play backstabbers in real time, you could never get behind anything after the initial hit :D

Problem for me was that since the world was huge and interesting, I wanted to search eeeeverythiing. But the level cap was 50 and I hit that 1/3 into the game.

FO2 best game I've ever played on PC, even with all the bugs. Nothing comes even close. Man they made good games back then..

Yep, Fallout 2 = best game ever. Just picked it up one day and it's all I did for a week straight. Abandoned all of my responsibilities, forgot about everything I should probably have been working on like finding a job... and that was just last years play through. The time before that was around 2004 I think so I'd mostly forgotten about my play through from 7 years ago.

Pretty much the best implementation of D&D 3rd Ed. combat there is. Unfortunately wasted on a game with encounter design ranging from mediocre to complete shit. That said, if you get your RPG kicks from good combat, it can be worth a playthrough for a few good fights.

It's also pretty buggy, with A LOT of save corruption bugs, but the Circle of Eight patch, which is pretty much mandatory anyway, fixes a lot of them.

It's awesome but it was kind of buggy/unfinished when it was released and I don't think that's really changed. If you liked the Icewind Dale series you should love it, it's really fantastic in that regard

looking for this topic made me feel some nostalgia about this game. I finished it countless time (10-11 times?).
I suggest people to install "the longer road" mod for TOB

I bought ToEE on cds way back when and never got the game working. Gave up after a while and to this day I have not played a single bit of that game.

Absolutely loved icewind dales though.

Icewind dales absolutely collapse to baldur's gate story. Make bg work, you won't regret it!

BG stories better yea, but I liked the action very much on IWD and their story wasn't all that bad. The games were just very linear, which in itself certainly ain't always a bad thing. It's like reading a book of an adventure, much as it was narrated as such. I simply liked it.

Arcane casters my undying love in those (and that type of) games, my god solo sorcerers were fun in IWD2.

IWD/IWD2 doesn't have the story or character development of BG/BG2, but makes up for it with better level/encounter design (BG has great caster encounter design, but stumbles a bit on the more mundane trash encounters being more boring--IWD tends to have more even encounter difficulty throughout). As an overall RPG experience, I'd say that BG2 is obviously the better game, but IWD is great for the more combat-minded.

Watched a couple gameplay video of Arcanum on Youtube and while the world seems great, the combat system just look so awful I'll have a look at The Temple of Elemental Evil which could best suit what my tastes of maybe reinstall IWD2 that I played for like 3 hours before giving up (don't remember why though, I think I tried to play an evil party as I usually do and ended up having to help people which pissed me off ).

Arcanum isn't an RPG for those who get their kicks from combat. But then again, neither is PS:T, and it's not like Fallout combat was that stellar either.

The about Arcanum for me is that it felt like an extension of what Tim Cain and the other Interplay guys (who moved to Troika) really made of the genre. It showed how they really *got* the CRPG, and how it could be used as a medium for "storymaking" rather than "storytelling"--taking advantage of the interactivity of the computer medium compared to literature or film. In FO1/2, you had a general goal in mind that drove the game (find the water chip, etc.) but the actual *story* that played out was essentially crafted out of what the player chose to do, rather than following a set of fixed plot points introduced by the designer. Arcanum built upon this foundation and really made a lot of stuff that didn't work about the "storymaking" model work (e.g. much more sensible and fluid companion interaction). The combat does kind of suck, but that's pretty secondary to what makes the game stand out.

This thread has made want to play PST again. I am going to get it of GoG one of these days while their offer of 2 for 1 still stands (actually 3 for 1 as you also get ToEE for free)

hey guys I need some help here. I decided to start my first complete playthrough in baldurs gate today but I can't get the games to work with win7.
BG1 ran find efor the first ~hour or so I played until I decided to use Baldur's Gate Tutu to use BGII's engine and features in BG1. When playing BGII (or BG1 with the mod) my mouse pointer starts flickering (alternating between the normal movement pointer and the attack variation) and it's impossible to play.

Alt tabbing resolves this temporarily but I can't alt-tab every 10 seconds... does anyone have experience with this bug? I'm playing on my win7 notebook with an nvidia graphics card (can also choose the intel HD variant)

.edit: Just figured something else: holding shift or alt doesn't fix it but "overrides" the flickering with a constant attack/move cursor as long as you hold the key

You should probably ask this question in the forum of the mods you are using.

don't get me wrong. The mod just uses BGII's engine. I've got the exact same mistake when starting a new game in BGII or ToB without any modifications to the game. BG1 ran fine until I started with the mod and I'm playing without it at the moment but it's kinda demotivating to know that BGII will bug once I finish the first part

Try disabling/enabling hardware acceleration in the game's options and try to vary the settings for shadows in-game.

I had problems with the graphics and fixed all of them by disabling vertex padding... whatever that is. Should be under the graphics tab of the advanced menu.
