God damn it, this thread reminded me that i still haven't finished my No Reload Challenge with all the difficulty mods installed.

Made it all the way to Werewolf Isle in BG1, after completing most of the vanilla quests, but then real life called and summoned me away Just can't seem to find the motivation to resume it, since it's the kind of game that you have to devote yourself entirely to.

Is it possible to do well as a monk ? Im about to start a new playthrough and never played one, and kicking people around seems like it would be nice.

Monk is an extremely good class! It's definitely weaker at the beginning than most other classes but when you start to reach the end of SoA / ToB, you start to kick some serious ass (insane damage output with hands, walk super fast, immune to a lot of stuff, etc).
I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best non abusive (kensai / mage, etc) / RP oriented class of the game.

The main problem with monks is that they are immune to haste.

It's a really big problem.

that's no big deal unless you're up against an iron golem or something. They get +5 fists in ToB pretty early on IIRC. that's where they really shine. ToB monks are horrendous, I downed one of the ToB bosses one on one in under a round, critted with every attack

edit: apparently I tell a lie, you only get +4 fists. Oh well. Still brutal.

Even if Monks are strong by the time they get to ToB, they're underpowered all the way through BG1 and most of BG2. That doesn't make them worth playing IMO.

The problem with Monks is that they're not tweakable like other characters. Everything's given to you as you level, there's no way to make them any more powerful than they already are.

Monks get up to 4 attacks, right?

4*(1d20+4+str) is nothing compared to 9*Foebane or 9*Flail of Ages.

As you mentioned earlier, haste immunity.
I only meant to say, 1d20 is very unrealiable in terms of damage dealt per hit.
Especially when some classes can just go and max all their hits for a certain time.

Damn, i wish class kits were still available in NWN etc. Never even finished the 3rd edition games; too much weird or outright useless stuff in it.

Im just starting NWN2 myself. Ive never played it before - Im excited for MOTB cause Ive heard so much good stuff. All the flak Obsidian gets puts me on tilt, they make superb role playing games.

It will probably take me forever to finish the trilogy...urgh.. SC always gets in the way..

I am not sure I would call them superb. NWN2 had OKish story and OKish gameplay that turned into very easy by midgame.

NWN2:MotB had good story but bad gameplay with ridicilous stuff like Inns banning your epic level character from ever entering inside LOL
But it had some more interesting and tougher fights.

NWN2:SoZ had best gameplay but worst story and many interesting and balanced fights. Biggest problem was lack of bigger interesting dungeons.

I bought NWN2+expanions from steam sale and i think i played it for like an hour before giving up. Maybe im just an elitist snob but everything about the game was inferior (imo ofc) to bg series. The graphics (woot?), it felt slow and clunky and the interface was not for my liking.

Will start BG trilogy in a few days my first time playing it from start to finish so to speak... super excited! :D

Yes, the interface is the biggest hurdle with NWN2. If/when you get used to it the game becomes much more fun.

I don't think Obsidian is so superb at the moment... the ratio of good to bad has been tipping a bit a while now, but they were amazing when they were known as Black Isle.

I think they started slipping since NWN2s average campaign and grindy gameplay with bad camera. Expansions were good, I still have to replay restored KotOR 2 (it was good enough for me to play multiple times in it's originla state so there you go...)

AP was... bold to say the least. Had great ideas, but the gameplay felt like it was rushed... level design was just a typical third person shooter popamole (very boring), without any of the fun you can have with ME2s biotic throw, pull, and charge.

New Vegas was good, and it had it's flaws but those can mostly be attributed to Bethesdas engine.

Dungeon Seige was never for me, and South Park is still in the early days of development.

All this talk that Obsidian are having over the conspet of a kickstarter is encouraging... if nothing else, it proves that they're still passionate about what they do and are willing to sacrifice the money of working on big, established IPs for the chance to make something that they love. I was concerned that they'd be too afraid to take risks because of APs commercial failure.

Exactly the same for me. I felt that NWN2 vanilla was pretty much mediocre, so i stopped just after the intro. I can't enjoy games like that after Dx or PST, i want something more interesting.
Then i really wanted to like MoTB because you can clearly see that they tried to make it better but i couldn't.

Why ? Because this engine is absolutly awful and ugly. Games like BG or PST look way better. I don't understand why they try to use bad 3D when you can have beautiful 2D hand painted backgrounds. Oh and the camera and the interface are garbage too.

Actually i know, it is cheaper and people like ugly 3D ( pretty much all the MMO :/ )

I found NWN2 decent - my biggest issue was for how much content there was, practically none was in side-quests, meaning the main story felt dragged-out and bloated, full of errand running and very slow to resolve anything. MotB fixes that entirely, having only one major plot that's a lot more focused (and not a generic 'an ancient evil has awoken' style story).

I never had issue with the interface or graphics, I'm curious as to what exactly people dislike?

I don't really have the time to explain it right now, but i plan to make a blog about aesthetics in video games. I think that both the technical aspect and the "style" are bad.

I'm sad that neverwinter nights 2 was made by obsidian and not by the company that made 1 which I believe was bioware. The gameplay and style of 1 is just so much better than 2 imo. I really can't put enough emphasis on the style, I don't know why but nwn 1 just had this beautiful unique style with those big hand painted weapons in your inventory and pretty menus and the hand painted portraits. NWN 2 just misses this. ( along with some other flaws)
