Throne of Baal kind of killed it for me... those high level moves you get just rape through the game and it's just a matter of clicking your way along. Meh. SoA was fantastic though

You should try Ascension + SCSII then

Mages are strong enough without this mod, and with it the game will become waaay too easy. You say fighting high level mages becomes a challenge, but in reality if you just cast a few Fireballs/Skull Traps/ADHW near them, they'll die nearly instantly with this mod. Plus, it's not that difficult to make your own characters highly resistant to most forms of magical damage in ToB.

you can make some characters highly resistant , others less so, + since the enemy mages level will increase accordingly , you can expect the typical opening of the average mage to cast timestop , then they`ll usually use combined emergency to cast a teleporterfield and horrid withering + confusion on your party. and thanks the the removed levelcap the field and confusion stay for 35 round while adhw hits you for 35d8. If you dident have the exact counterspells prepared your mostly gona be whiped out by the third round while having no control over your randomly teleported party ^^
The futures uncertain , but the end is always near

Just install Ascension and you will realise why these high-level spells are there.

Or some even harder mods, but thats really just for people that "have to go deeper" .

Reload, beat it the 2nd time or find next nasty suprise and repeat.
There already are a few "challenges" like this in vanilla, i don't see the point in turning the game into a reload-athon.
That's not difficult, just annoying.

Question for the experts:

I am multiplaying with a friend, 1 character each. For BG I've chosen Thief-Mage multi class.

When I get to BG2 does it make sense to switch my character to Thief-Mage dual class? or multiclass will be better in the long run?

In BG2, dual classes are generally better than multi-classes, as most of the time you can get all of the important benefits of a class within the first 9 levels. In ToB (and maybe later BG2 depending on party size), multi classes win out because they get access to both classes' HLAs and many classes don't scale very well past level ~20.

In the case of thief/mage, you can definitely pump your stealth skills enough+you reach 4x backstab multiplier with level 9, so it's better to dual class.

My problem is that my thief multiclass will be the only one with the thieving skills. Being a fan of traps, I am worried I will not have enough thief skill points with 9 levels to suit all my needs.

Just installed SCSII for the first time...oh my god.

Comparing the fight with Firkraag before and after the mod...he used to be an absolute cakewalk, but with the mod I required like 5 reloads to develop my strategy and finally bring him down.

That's true.

A dual class thief/mage will be mostly a mage, while a multi-class thief/mage will be mostly a thief.

It's very possible to get through BG2 without any kind of thief.

Thank goodness for mods like ascension and SCS... BGII is certainly an excellent adventure game... lots to discover, lots to do, some really good writing. But once you've taken a good look at BGII vanilla it shows that it's not nearly as complex as it looks. Can get through most of the vanilla game with only a few magic spells without breaking a sweat. Breach the mages, focus them down, true sight to counter any invisibility, and some minor summoning fodder on the front lines so that your own fighters don't die so quickly. Use the odd protection from negative energy/elements/magic weapons against vampires/dragons, and just nuke beholder from off the screen with fireballs. Mods make BGII much more tactical. I

Tried to do this but bg1 won't install on windows 7. The install button on the autorun and the setup.exe do nothing

Summary of the best classes for BG2/ToB, for newer players.

Arcane
+ Show Spoiler +
Sorceror:
  • Very flexible in-battle, especially with regards to sequencer spells
  • Easily the best Project Image/Simulacrum casters.
  • Must know which spells to learn at each level, or can end up gimped.

Wild Mage:
  • Chain Contingency+3 Improved Chaos Shields makes Nahal's completely safe to use.
  • Nahal's are cast as if Improved Alacrity was active.
  • Limited Wish refreshes Nahal's, can be cast during a Time Stop.
  • A bit cheesey, only becomes amazing when level 9 spells are learned.

Berserker (9) --> Mage:
  • High health, decent THAC0, and grandmastery in a weapon. Makes for a decent frontline fighter (especially with Tenser's Transformation).
  • Only 9 levels in a fighter class means he'll quickly catch up in mage levels.
  • Does not have access to any mage kits, so not quite as good at casting as a Wild Mage or Sorceror, but will be just as good as a pure Mage.

Divine
+ Show Spoiler +
Ranger (9) --> Cleric:
  • Basic divine caster, tons of spell slots.
  • Not the best in a straight up fight.
  • Has access to both cleric spells and druid spells.

Ranger/Cleric:
  • Pretty good fighter, especially later on in the game. Defender of Easthaven+Hardiness+Armor of Faith means 85% damage resistance.
  • Can be cramped for spell slots at lower levels.
  • Has access to both cleric spells and druid spells.
  • Weak Turn Undead.

Martial
+ Show Spoiler +
Fighter/Mage (Kensai):
  • Fighter classes don't need much experience, so even with the multi-class he'll still have a high enough THAC0 to be a perfectly fine fighter.
  • Mage levels allow him to buff himself up, and also shore up and weaknesses in your caster's repertoire.
  • Can use Kensai kit without having to deal with any of the disadvantages (requires level1NPCs or Shadowkeeper).

Inquisitor (paladin kit):
  • Dispel Magic with a virtually 100% success rate on any enemy. Not party-friendly, however.
  • Starts the game with True Sight, making mages/thieves less of a hassle early.
  • Not as good in a straight up battle as a pure fighter.

Blade (bard kit):
  • Bards have the fastest leveling table, allowing for early Skeleton Warriors and the strongest Remove Magic in the game.
  • Not as good offensively as a fighter, but Offensive Spin closes some of the gap (and it does stack with Improved Haste).
  • Defensive Spin and a few self-cast buffs can get this guy's AC around -30. Nothin gonna hit that. Also, Free Action lets him move during Defensive Spin.

I've never tried playing a bard.

I think you start with pretty weak magic; do you begin playing in a thief style or just stay back and hope the rest of your party handles stuff while you support with whatever you have ranged?

Nope, play him like a fighter (or more accurately, like a Fighter/Mage). Again, a Blade is basically like a slightly weaker Fighter/Mage with a strong Remove Magic+Animate Dead. Kind of a mix of Fighter/Mage and Inquisitor.

Is it possible to do well as a monk ? Im about to start a new playthrough and never played one, and kicking people around seems like it would be nice.

Bards are the fastest leveling class in the game. At the SoA cap, for example, a Bard is level 23 while a Mage is level 18. At 8 million XP, the ToB cap, a Bard is level 46 and a Mage is level 31. Remove Magic is significantly more effective the higher level you are, and Animate Dead becomes much more powerful at level 15. Obviously, there are other spells that scale very well with level that a Blade can get good use of, but these are the two that I think are most significant.

Monk is an extremely good class! It's definitely weaker at the beginning than most other classes but when you start to reach the end of SoA / ToB, you start to kick some serious ass (insane damage output with hands, walk super fast, immune to a lot of stuff, etc).
I'd go as far as to say it's one of the best non abusive (kensai / mage, etc) / RP oriented class of the game.
