I have Anomen with me currently, since only a day, and I dropped him for Cernd to do the animals' invasion quest. Do these do have good interactions with my party (or dialogs in general) that would justify keeping one or the other around a bit? They didn't seem to have a lot of personality to me, but I'm willing to give them a chance if they're interesting, rather than do their quests and send them back.

I'm already set on my definitive party being my Thief, Minsc, Jaheira, Aerie, Jan and Haer'Dalis (since I heard he's good at melee combat), but as I don't want to bother with Haer'Dalis quest now (I've been told it's on the difficult spectrum of the quests, along with Valygar's) I'm doing the other characters' quests so I have a look at all of them. Cernd is the most boring/undeveloped character in BG2. Anomen at least has some character, and his own quest that adjusts it further.

Really though, Mind Flayers specialize in mental attacks but that have quite weak combat ability. Summoning Invisible Stalkers or Undead then buffing them up to fight them are probably the most standard ways to beat them.

I got My main Character as a Ranger at level 13, Minsc at level 13 Ranger, Imoen at level 11 Mage, Jaheira at levels 11 Fighter and 13 Druid, Anomen at level 14 Cleric, and Mazzy at level 13 Fighter. Much thanks to anyone who does reply! Mind flayers are dangerous because of their magic resistance, stun and brain devouring ability. Their weakness is that they are frail and does little damage. Buff your party with chaotic command and haste. Drink potion that increases your int. Use summon fodders and beat them while they're distracted. Skeleton warriors/mordy swords/invisible stalker are the best summon to take on mind flayers. 6th level mage spell "death spell" kills them, not sure though. Or cast cloudkill into the room, close the door and watch them die but that's cheesy.

Also, your party seems to be pretty low leveled for being in chapter 4, so you might want to do the other two dungeons in the underdark first. The Koatua one is easy as pie except for the optional boss fight. The beholder on e is just as easy if you get the right setup but otherwise impossibly hard. :>

Otherwise just the good old chaotic command and punch them in the face strategy. Just be careful to not pull huge groups at once. Usually you can kill 2-3 easily but bigger groups, especially with Illithids rather than just normal mindflayers can still be problematic. immediately cloak him, throw some cloudkills in the room, close the door afap, wait. thats how I did it. There is also a way to do it with some slave collars or something ( quest item ) if you do the quest properly in the mind flayer lair in the underdark. this game is so epic. I hope they give good discount on steam this weekend, Ill buy that shit again for sure. my favorite rpg of all times.

Their To Hit is pretty bad so if you have someone with good Armor let him stand in front and you should be able to avoid most hits and intelligence drain.Just keep an eye on the intelligence of the chars that get hit and swap out the tanks / drink more potions of genius if they get low. The cleric spell raise dead is pretty good to throw at them if you don't have anyone else to tank. Get 4-6 Skeletons to distract them while you hit them. If you want to nuke them with a spell without cheesing cloudkill then Holy Smite works really well against Mind flayers (Lvl3 divine). If you get them bunched up with a buffed tank you can give Anomen some time to deal a lot of aoe damage with a couple of Holy Smites. Also works against Umber Hulks.

edit: Ok, you don't have a fighter/mage. However, you have a lot of warrior types and a lot of summons. Block them using summons (undead are best) and focus fire with ranged weapons.
