After you're done, you should really look into the first Baldur's Gate and a couple mods for it. The BG community has a monstrous mod community and they're all pretty damn good. I suggest getting the mod where you can play Baldur's 1 on the Baldur 2 engine. There's a couple really good NPC banter packs and conversation packs as well.
Gravity is just a feeble plot.

As I recall you hold the mouse over their portrait or model and hold tab. If you're looking for a permanent view of their HP then I can only suggest to look in the options since I never played with that.

Even though I have SoA+ToB sitting here on my shelf (like 1m from my desk), I just bought the digitial version from GoG.com. I've always wanted to play BG2 in english, and I hated the installation from 5 or 6 different CDs.

I'm so looking forward to trying some of the stuff I never did in one of my 20+ playthroughs before; maybe solo the game as a fighter/mage/thief, or try a truly evil party.

It's been a long time since I've been excited for a video game, and I'm impatiently waiting for the download to finish.

I kinda want to try the game but I'm turned off by the 2nd ed. ruleset this game uses =/. I only played Icewind Dale II and the NWN games, they all used 3ed so I'm familiar with that. How is 2nd compared to the 3rd? Besides the THAC0 system (which I don't really know about).
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

Icewind Dale 1/2 are decent games, and NWN sucks except for community mods and that one expansion. Neither can live up to the sheer awesomeness that is BG2(+addon). Get it asap.

Regarding the ruleset: Who cares? In-game, you don't see many of the differences that distinguish 2E from 3E, i.e. D20 rolls or the details of saving throws. If you've frequently tabletop role-played you may notice varying details with character creation or combat specifics, but if all you know about editions are other computer games, chances are you won't even notice.

2nd ed isn't bad. Sure it has ups and downs but it isn't bad. The major draw back is ofcourse that charters can't be as complex as 3rd, but for that it is much simpler and you don't need to worry about planning characters half as much since you don't have feats. 2nd edition fighters are fighters mages are mages and you really can't blur that boundary too much. Where 3rd edition is just about as complex as it gets for 2nd you only need to know that you want lower armor class and lower Thaco.

I'm working my way through the game slowly. I'm not familiar with DnD rules and kept randomly dieing to wolves and spiders so I turned the difficulty down to novice. I just made my way through some tainted iron mine and killed some kobold dude. He was easy, but the group that attacked me after I left the mines was not. I lost at least 10 times to them.

(I've got all of BG1 + 2, installed all the mods and stuff, so I'm playing the whole thing through from start to finish)

I'm picking up a bunch of items that I'm not sure if I should be keeping or not. All these gemmed necklaces and non-magic rings and random stones. Should I sell these or save them?

Another thing - is there any time limit to this game? It keeps track of your total days, will I be penalized if I spend too much time resting or traveling around?

I think that one of the best things in your first BG1 run is the difficulty, i know it can be frustrating to reload for some people but i think you should just play differently instead of lowering the difficulty to the minimum ( i only lower when i level up to get max hp ).
When i say differently it means runing away a lot, grinding with small quests, hunting weak monsters, being extremely cautious and leveling slower.
I guess it isn't everyone taste but i loved BG1 for low level exploration, you know exploring a new area and runing away when you meet a group of bounty hunters or a huge mob of gnolls, coming back to the city selling stuff you have collected, buying that flashy +1 weapon, exploring carefully another area and thinking the whole time "one day i will come back and kick yo ass" :p

That's why i loved BG1 because you had to be humble and most of the time run away the tail between the legs or reload if you aren't as lucky. It is part of the game in my opinion.

Yea you can pretty much sell everything. However if you have some really high value stuff ( emerald , diamond, pearl, laeral's tear necklaces etc... ) try to sell a lot of the same type at the same time because when you have already sold one item to a merchant, its value decreases if you try to sell the same type later. It doesn't really matter when it is shitty gems but otherwise try a new merchant.

Nope although there are a couple of time limited quests, one quite annoying in the Baldur's Gate city ( there are more in BG2 though )
BG1 is a lot of roaming and exploring until you feel confident and strong enough to go further in the main quest but be carefully some areas are way more dangerous than Naskhel's mines for low level characters.
Do not try to go to the Durlag tower too early for example :p

I played through BGI recently on insane remembering how difficult it was 8 years ago. I totally steamrolled the entire game wondering how on earth I had so much difficulty with it.

Best tips I can give you+ Show Spoiler +
are to give all of your characters ranged weapons, retreat to choke points whenever possible. and to make enemy spell casters your top priority. You don't have to kill the mages quickly, just give your whole party ranged weapons and focus fire on them whenever they're trying to cast a spell. Monster summoning, ranged weapons, entangle and colr spray will be your best friends in the early game

Mobs pretty much stick like glue to whatever they attacked first, so you can pretty much just trick out one character as a tank and let him take all the damage.

I'd like to try out some of the mods, but the last time I tried more than a minimal install the weidu thing set my code page to Latin and nearly bricked my windows install. Had to do a windows repair and system restore to fix it.

In any event, the Big World mod minimal install + widescreen mod are pretty much all you need if you want some nostalgia. The only downside is the BG2 engine split up thieving skills so it's harder to get things to a good level early in BG1. You'll definitely want the BG2 engine and widescreen though; the game is 100x better with just those.

Do not try to go to the Durlag tower too early for example

This zone was kind of weird. The couple of guys outside the tower were much, much stronger than the guys inside. It's rather off-putting when you first go there because after that fight you think you need several more levels before going in, when in reality if you can kill those things outside you can deal with the inside.

I'm so looking forward to trying some of the stuff I never did in one of my 20+ playthroughs before; maybe solo the game as a fighter/mage/thief, or try a truly evil party.

I'm doing the evil route currently (although I skipped BG1 this time around). There are some interesting new things, but it's not all that different. Try and get an entirely different cast of party members, as their subplots and dialogs are pretty good.

My party:
+ Show Spoiler +

Me (Evil Monk)
Keldorn (Evil Warrior)
Haer'Dalis (Neutral Blade)
Viconia (Evil Priestess, Romance)
Jan (Neutral Thief/Illusionist)
Edwin (Evil Invoker)

Haer is actually pretty baller with those spins. Jan's special ammo kind of sucks, but I needed a thief and wanted a second mage. I actually don't have an archer right now, which kinda sucks. I don't really wanna drop Haer because those spins are so good, but he's not that interesting of a character.

A lot of them sell for a pittance, notably the silver ones. It's worth learning which of the few don't sell for much. Buy as many bags as you can (gem bags, scroll cases, etc.) I don't think there's a bag of holding till later in BG1 (there's one in WK somewhere, but you can't really go to WK too early w/o getting destroyed).

Another thing - is there any time limit to this game? It keeps track of your total days, will I be penalized if I spend too much time resting or traveling around?

Not really. There are a few quests where you have a time limit. When you meet Phaere, at one point she says "meet me within the hour" and you only get one game-hour to do so. There's a few other quests that say something like "within a tenday" or "within two weeks." Some characters will complain if you're on a quest, but that doesn't necessarily mean a time-limit, although in some cases they will leave if you wait too long. For the most part, you can just screw around as much as possible. I did almost everything possible before even leaving chapter 2, even though I was at like 60 days before moving to chapter 3.

Well the upper levels of Durlag aren't hard and yea the horrors oustide of the tower are probably harder, however once you get to the dwarfs it becomes way more difficult.

I have so many good memories from BG2 SoA & ToB. So much you can do, so much to discover. Different parties lead to a different game. Singling with a F/M/T was also quite exciting. Tough at the start, but then again once you hit a certain level, it becomes too easy.

I might install it again with the resolution mod. Great to play BG2 on a large widescreen resolution.

Get BG1+TotSC+BG2+ToB, and get the BGtutu (or any other game merging mod) and widescreen resolution mods. Few gaming experiences can match going from Candlekeep to the Throne of Bhaal in one sitting.

Can't wait for you to battle Firkraag for the first time. It's probably the most epic and satisfying battle of all games of all time. And after you loot him, if you have a paladin in your party, you're gonna be sooo happy.

This thread makes me so nostalgic. I haven't played BG2 in 7 or 8 years, but it was absolutely epic and reading the thread makes me want to replay it. The Firkraag battle caught me by such surprise. + Show Spoiler +
I suspected he was up to no good and had no idea he would be a dragon, and although I half-expected dragons to show up at some point in the game never thought it could be so early, or seemingly so random. I was only 12 when I first played the game.
Took me FOREVER to kill him, too.

That zone epitomizes all of BG2, and makes RPGs stand out to be as a genre to me. It's really a shame that there hasn't been a computer game or series that truly rivals BG1/BG2/PS:T in this department. I liked Morrowind/Oblivion and Dragon Age, but it just wasn't quite the same. Then again, I could be unfair considering I was so much younger and more impressionable when first playing the Infinity Engine games.

Maybe I'll do a full BG saga clear, or even more tempting, actually beat Icewind Dale 2 on Heart of Fury mode this time.

To all those playing BG2 for the first time, if you enjoy the RP elements of the game (character/NPC interaction, decisions, and the storyline) moreso than the combat itself, check out Planescape: Torment. There's even a thread on TL about it. If you like the combat in that engine, check out Icewind Dale 2.

You fight some Battle Horrors outside Durlags Tower if I remember right, there are more insside, as well as the Dwarven Warders who are much tougher. With SCS installed Durlags Tower becomes extremely challenging at some points (chessboard fight, Kyrinhale come to mind.)

As for Haer'Dalis in BGII, he is one of my favorite characters to keep. Blades become basically unkillable in melee, can use a variety of tactical weapons like say Carsomyr if you really need a dispel, or the Scarlett NinjaTo in the offhand if you want to mow things down. The HLA bard song pretty much puts your AC at the max allowable, and grants immunity to some of the most annoying things in the game to the whole party. If you can get something to attack Haer'Dalis, and then do an improved evasion/bard song/defensive spin, he'll have -22 AC. Add in stonekin, improved invisibility, maybe tensers for the double HP and some form of level drain protection and he can sit right in front of pretty much anything without worrying about dying. You can even cast mislead and have the clone sing the bard song while the real one fights. Plus his banter is kind of cool, he basically sits back and makes fun of some of the tropes in the side plots, you need the banter pack installed to hear most of them because scripting errors prevent them in the vanilla game.

Also abuse Jans really good detect illusion ability so you never have to cast true sight, and Mazzy makes a really good archer. Especially if you give her that early game bow that adds 3 attacks per round. That will tide you over nicely until you can get the Gesen bow or Taralash or something.

So I just finished playing Planescape Torment yesterday and i must say that is one of the best if not the best (excluding SC ofc )game I have played. Why dont they make such awesome games anymore ??

So I was thinking to give a try to BG2 or maybe BG. Should I play BG first or just go with BG2 ?
