Still remember the grief the demon in church gave me! + Show Spoiler + The fucker you had to heal to damage! My first fight was like 10 minutes with that guy, spamming everything I had before dying misarably. Took me 2 days before I figured out what I was doing wrong^^ Also the horrible Jack the Ripper quest, which I never solved, still haunts me to the day! :D | ||

When you are ready to embark on a new journey (been 2 months since the OP), definitely try Planescape: Torment. I'm sure this has been mentioned, but I'm just reinforcing it. I just finished this game less than a month ago, having missed it way back when, and it might just surpass BG2. | ||

Main character - Kensai/Mage - dualled at lvl 9 with katanas - Celestial Fury/Dakkon Zerth or whatever Korgan - dual wield Crom Faiyr + whatever axe u can find Keldorn - Carsomyr Viconia - best cleric + best storyline + best romance. Equip with the Sling that does +damage based on Str, and give her girdle of 19 str Edwin - this guy is a monster. He's an even better mage than if you roll a mage yourself Imoen - kinda meh, decent mage, has just enough thieving skills for your basic needs - but pivotal to the storyline Alternatively, you could roll an Inquisitor yourself (fits the RP perspective, paladin party leader), drop Keldorn (he ends up wanting to kill Viconia anyway, unless u got happy patch i think), and get Jaheira, who by the end of ToB, becomes beastly, thanks to multiclass characters being so strong in ToB. P.S. It might be kind of a drag to level a kensai/mage throughout the whole trilogy, seeing how few katanas there are in vanilla (u could go for long swords, but i feel like a kensai should use katanas - just makes sense), and also you'll spend half of Shadow of Amn being a dualled mage unable to use your fighter skills. If you want a constantly strong main char the entire game, go for a plain fighter/berserker/barbarian or a paladin kit. And most of all, enjoy what is probably the best game ever created. | ||

I've played through as a solo Mage, Sorcerer, and Bounty Hunter. I'm considering a solo Monk or a melée-oriented class (the aforementioned solo Blade sounded intriguing!) I'm not sure if it was mentioned previously, but if you didn't get the boxed Collector's edition, make sure to track down the "cheat" codes that add in the two additional merchants in the Adventurer's Mart. Their wares are indispensable! | ||

Yeah the basic G3 mods add them too (tweakpack/fixpack/scs.) SCS2 has a component that delays their arrival somewhat so you can't just decide to screw Imoen and blow your first 20k on a Robe of Veccna or something. Also to the guy who wants to solo a blade, make sure you buy the scarlett ninja to from the merchant in the copper coronet. It's only usuable by monks but blades with UAE don't care about that. It's better than belm or kundane becuase it is +3 rather than +2 with no speed factor and the +1 attacks per round bonus. Put it in the offhand and it's actually the main hand that receives the extra attack. An improved hasted kensai/theif can basically have a permanent 10 attacks per round. Add in critical strike and kai and he will be dishing out a good 600 damage per round to all that can take it. | ||

I like going with parties of 4 so you gain xp faster, especially useful when going for a dual classed character since you get your original class back earlier. | ||

Soloing is really nice. I can live without the interaction between characters. Sure romance is good, but its just artifical anyway. Can't say that any of those girls I've met in BG really loved me anyways. And basically I just feel that all those other characters are crowding my main. Stealing it's thunder. I just don't like parties for some reason. I've always liked to go solo druid, because they are treeloving casters with fun spells (LIGHTNING!!!). Never really liked the cleric that much, which of course is stupid. I've never completed the game with a solo druid, however, maybe because I think the fun part is just the process of playing it, especially when the characters are really weak. When they get too strong they are really not that much fun anymore. I WILL complete the game with a solo druid. Edit: I die a lot in the beginning. Especially to spellcasters and archers of all kinds. That will end when I get my first summoning spells. I'm wondering if I'm able to kill the bosses. Boss-battles do not favor of solo-druid, but we'll see. | ||

My knowledge of the BG mechanics is quite rusty, particularly where Jan is concerned. Is he an effective back stabber versus opponenets that are stunned or while Jan is not visible? As I remember Jan has a rather effective stun ability, but Haers song is brilliant during epic levels, and he's good at not getting hit but low HP and heavy reliance on magic makes him a very high maintainance character as opposed to Jan who can sit back and support from a safe distance with magic, stun and theiving abilities. Though Jans magic is weaker due to lower caster levels than Haer, he still has the most potential as a spell caster later on. It's really difficult to say which character is the best imo. | ||

I would have said that blades suck but after reading this thread i have realized that they are extremely imba if you know how to play. Jan is probably better if you don't want to spend all your time buffing / pausing though. So yea it really depends of what you want. I think that Jan is more suited to beginners and Haer is for experimented players. | ||

The bigger problem is Haer'Dalis has no Constitution - but he's not going to be taking damage anyways past a point. | ||

I'll need to replay the game to confirm, but I'm predicting that Jan will be better for SoA and Haer will be better for ToB where imba magic items becomes standard . | ||
