Had a lot of fun playing this game, and I still play it once or twice a year just for kicks.

I still love the retardedness of improved haste in a warrior heavy party and the chain contingency +3 horrid withering spells. Not to mention the time stop + improved alacrity carnage.

I like the depth of gameplay you get in this game and even though the story sounds very cliché it still feels well written compared to all the other games that hit the market today.

My favourite party is usually the evil party with power stats
Viconia, Korgan, Edwin, Anomen (Sarevok), Yoshimo (Imoen)

Main char depends on the mood, but I can recommend trying out wild mage or an assassin at some point. When making an assassin I would recommend making a human and dual class him to warrior once you get to septuple (x7) backstab damage. A berserker warrior with good stats though is probably the best, but also the most no brainer, char you can make.

The best HQ-Chars are one of the following:
A Witch. Magic is overpowered in General in this Game so...
A Kensai/Mage dual or a late switch from Kensai to Mage (ridiculous in Tob-levels).
Ranger --> Cleric switch (all Cleric and all Druid Spells).
Mage/Cleric --> In small partys... Just a beast, think Aerie... With good stats and no annoying Emo-Elf personality :p.

And in general:
Berserk --> Switch to X is basically allways better than a pure class (more HP and Berserk-Rage and if you switch right away you lose basically no experience on your "main" class).

I still keep this game installed on my PC - It's just so good! It has so much atmosphere to it's graphics and story line. One of the forces of this game is that it uses the 2nd Edition AD&D ruleset

I still play pen'n paper 2nd Edition AD&D, infact me and some of my old friends have been playing the same campaign for 15 years now, still meeting up once every 2 months to cook some good food, drink redwine and play AD&D - We've all gotten older but we still have just as much fun.
The first link of chain forged, the first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably.

So i just installed BGtrilogy and it works perfect. Now im really noob at this game and i need some general tips what type of char to do. The game is kinda similar to Planescape Torment but there you only had to assign atribute points at start and here its much more complicated.

Gonna start playing BG1 so some tips are welcomed for a char type and what to pick and stuff.

If you're new to the game it'll probably take you some minutes to get used to everything, regardless whether you've chosen a fighter or a mage. Every character / class will work, in fact on my very first BG1 playthrough many many years ago I played with a Paladin with random stats (didn't distribute the points the way it should be done because I didn't know that was possible) and I still managed to have a blast and beat the game.

Just read through all the class descriptions and pick whatever you think sounds the most interesting. Don't try to make a character that can do everything at once; I'd recommend not to multiclass if it's the first time you're playing.

If you're really clueless what class to pick, you can't do too much wrong with a paladin or a fighter.

Best characters for a beginner are some sort of Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian or Fighter ( many different subclass with pros and cons but they are all quite good ). They are strong and really easy to use. You just need to max Strengh / Consti / Dex and if possible Wisdom.
Priest are quite decent too.

BG1 is really hard for low level health point characters if you are a beginner so i don't think you should play a mage. A Kensai fighter might be a bit weak early on in BG1 too because you can't use an armour.

However mages get stronger than fighters in BG2 and ToB, so if you don't mind a really difficult beginning why not ? :p

Also when you are leveling up you should change the difficulty to "easy" because it grants you max health point / level.

For BG2 i would say:

Rule 1:
Constitution:
Put it to 16 for casters/thieves and 18 for fighters. (These values give you the max. possible hit point gains per level)

Further:
Main Attribute should be maxed, except for Fighters.

Int is good against Mind Flayers, put "spare" points here, it can make the game really much easyer if you got a fighter that at least can take 3-4 hits from these guys.

Charisma:
In BG2 you find an Item to solve that for you VERY early. If you don't mind using one ring slot for Charisma then you can basically ignore it. + Show Spoiler +
enter the circus

Strenght:
There are lots of Items that grant you Str., some can you get very early from a merchant. Later there are Items that are WAY better than anything you could ever skill in Str... So maxing is not nessesary even if it's your main attribute.

Wisdom is only interesting for Priests/Druids, Paladins and Rangers get a benefit but it's not really important (they don't get the higher spell levels anyway). It does not influence your saving throws (i think the booklet/game sais it does, it doesn't).

Dexterity:
Lower AC is allways nice... There are not many Items that improve Dexterity so points in here are never wasted.

Please don't take any advice beyond the general "Strength and Consitution is good for fighters". Don't worry about how much Int you need against Mind Flayers or when which item will boost which stat.

The classes and stats are explained ingame and in the manual, that's all you need to know. BG/TotSC/BG2/ToB is one of those games where too much thinking, too much planning ahead can easily ruin your fun. Play the way you like it, create your character the way you see fit. It is a role playing game, after all.

Do any of you want to do the No-Reload Challenge? Bg2 is too easy to beat with load game even on insane once u know how the mechanics work. I'm up for the challenge if anyone else is. And we can document our progress here.

You mean rogue-like style ?
Seems completly crazy if you play SCS :p

Really interesting if i wasn't too busy watching bw/Sc2 i could give a try.
I'm interested if you make a write up, especially if you use SCS/SCSII.

Considering the time neccessary for even a very fast playthrough, a no-load challenge could be frustrating. There are so many random moments when a wild fear, stun, hold or lost saving throw can ruin your day. It'd be super annoying to just have wasted 20 or 30 hours of play time because some roll went bad and the main character died.

Nothing that'd appeal to me; but then I also didn't like playing RPGs in hardcore modes in general (Diablo 2 etc.).

Or we can try limited reload challenge. You can restart from the autosave if the main character dies out of a fluke (since u can't res main char) once per chapter let's say. And the rest of your npc's you have to ressurect. Or if they disintegrate, u lose them forever.

Some update for BG1.

My first char was multiclass fighter/mage but after some exploring and doing some quests i decided to go for more simpler char like berserker. Im on chapter 3 just before doing the mines quest. I cant find one quest about some cloak for one dwarf in 2nd town inn ...

My first impressions of this game is that the concept is similar to Planescape Torment but PT is ALOT better in my eyes mostly because of the story. BG can get preety anoying sometimes and dunno I feel like the range chars are imba. Got 2 in my party and its so easy to kill everything so far

It is ok you need to go further in the main quest to get access to the area where the cloak is.

PT story is better than BG it is undeniable. But BG story is still pretty much better than all the others CRPG ( at least 95% of them ).

Ranged fighters / rangers are the characters in BG1, especially in the beginning when the characters are too weak to fight in melee. But it will change when your characters will get more hp and better armors. Also mages get really good in BG2 and almost broken in ToB.

I'm not sure if I agree. I found tha Kivan and Coran could always surpass or hold their own with the melee fighters. Turns out that the two of them were not the best at melee, but Kivan is useful as long as you give him a good spear and position in behind a tank, and Corans back stabs are quite good also.

Or I could be remembering wrong. But either way these two are usually both absolute beasts especially when they're in the same group

You are right Coran and Kivan are probably my favourite characters in BG1 and yea Kivan can do decent in melee. However what i meant is that in some situation you can't kite ennemies and you have to switch your ranged characters to melee not that you have to use swords only during the whole game

Early on you can basicly kite everything to death ( weak ennemies and open areas )
but kiting in the Durlag tower or in the mines is another story :p

If you had tons ofarrows of dispelling and fireball in bg2 like in 1, archers would be all you need there too. Well not that ranged attacks are weak as it is in bg2 either.
If you have to ask, you don't know.
